    Digital image correlation (DIC) represents a groundbreaking approach for measuring displacements and strain fields. Unlike conventional measurement methods like strain gauges, potentiometers, and ... LVDT sensors, DIC allows for local full-field measurement of kinematic fields using a high-resolution optical camera system. Recent studies indicate that this approach not only enables the measurement of displacement and strain fields but also paves the way for the direct calculation of stress fields without constitutive relations. The only necessary assumption is the alignment of principal directions of stress and strain tensor. This assumption leads to a set of hyperbolic partial differential equations, which are, for the first time, solved using the finite element method.
