  • Influence of graphite particle shape in cast iron on results of laser surface remelting process

    ǂThe ǂprocedure of laser heat treatment by surface remelting has recently been increasingly used on products from cast irons for modifying the surface layer. By this procedure it is possible to ... achieve a very high wear resistance of such modified surface. The properties of the modified layer depend on the microstructure prior to heat treatment and on the amount of energy input transferred into the surface layer of the workpiece. The experimental part of the study consisted graphite and matrix prior to and after the procedure. Graphite particles in iron matrices were recognized and classified with introducing a form factor in computer aided analysis of the microstructure. The microstructure components of the laser-modified layer were additionally verified by X-ray diffraction. The findings about laser surface remelting of cast irons are supplemented by careful selection of optimal laser treatment conditions.
