  • Experimental study of interactions between spatially controlled nucleation sites on a thin flat plate in pool boiling

Depending on the spatial distribution of nucleation sites, certain interaction effects appear which have a significant influence on heat transfer in pool boiling. Because of the complexity of ... mechanisms that occur during interactions between sites, a new experimental observation method was developed using spatial control of nucleation sites on a thin flat plate in pool boiling. An experimental apparatus which incorporates a continuous-wave laser beam as a source of heat was designed and constructed for this purpose. The laser beam was used to set different heat fluxes in a circular heating area of variable diameter on a thin flat metal plate. In order to study the interactions between individual nucleation sites, an optical system was made in which the laser beam is split into four proportional beams of equal diameter and power. A specially designed mechanism enables the changing of the diameter of each circular heated area and the distance between them. The paper presents the results of our first tests with the new experimental method. The results have shown that the intensity of interactions between nucleation sites does not depend only on the S/DH ratio, but also on the diameter of the heating areas DH and their arrangement.
