  • Lattice modelling of cellular structures
    Borovinšek, Matej ; Ren, Zoran
Cellular structures represent an important class of engineering materials. Typical representative of such structures are metallic foams, which are being increasingly used in many advanced engineering ... applications due to their low specific weight, appropriate mechanical properties and excellent energy absorption capacity. For optimal design of cellular structures it is necessary to develop proper computational models, which allow for required computer simulations. This paper describes different methods for 3D reproduction of irregular open cell structures by means of lattice modelling. Two different methods were used to create a lattice of beam finite elements to represents the real cellular structure of metallic foam. The first method is based on controlled disorder of nodal locations of a regular tetrakaidecahedral mesh and the second method is based on 3D Voronoi technique. The cell morphology and beam element sizes of obtained lattice models are compared and studied in detail.
