  • Simulation of road safety barrier crash tests
    Borovinšek, Matej ; Ren, Zoran
The paper describes computational simulations of large scale crash tests by using the finite element code LS-DYNA on a multiprocessor platform. Different vehicle models were developed and validated ... for crash simulations of road safety barriers. To reduce the costs of development and testing of new safety barrier designs the computer simulations were used to estimate the impact severity parameters and barrier deformation before the real crash tests were conducted. That way any design changes can be easily evaluated. Computational crash simulations used for early evaluation of different safety barrier reinforcements are presented. According to EN 1317 required crash test were simulated to compare the behaviour of the reinforced safety road barriers under test vehicle impact. Using the simulation results the most suited safety barrier design was determined. At the end a good correlation of computational and experimental results is illustrated using two vehicle impact tests for chosen containment level.
