According to the EM-DAT report, a record 432 natural disasters occurred around the world in 2021, inflicting thousands of casualties and the damage whose cost has been hundreds of billions of ... dollars. Bearing this in mind, the development of a protection and rescue system is clearly an important step for the safety of people, property and the environment in all countries of the world, including the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). With the aim of responding more easily and comprehensively to natural disasters and other emergency situations, BiH joined the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (EUCPM). The purpose of this paper is to present the advantages and disadvantages of this action and the resulting diversification of the country’s protection and rescue system, i.e., the benefits and risks of BiH, thus also of the Republic of Serbia, belonging to the EUCPM. The paper studies the statistical indicators and experiences of the neighbouring countries that are also EUCPM members and draws conclusions using the methods of analysis and synthesis. It shows that BiH has diversified its protection and rescue system to an extent, with the intent of enabling a more comprehensive and diverse response to a range of natural disasters and other emergency situations, but that the protection and rescue systems of the Republic of Srpska, thus also those of Bosnia and Herzegovina, must not rely entirely on the assistance provided through the EUCPM, but must instead also develop their own resources and capabilities, and diversify their protection and rescue systems.
