  • Premonetary objects from the South-Eastern Alpine region - chemical and metallographic analyses
    Trampuž Orel, Neva ...
ICP-AES analyses have revealed interesting compositions for three Late Bronze Age ingots found in the south-eastern Alpine region, in present-day Slovenia. Two of them belong to hoards - one from ... Hoèko Pohorje, dated to the 12th cent. BC, and another from SempeteržSan Pietro near GoricažGorizia, dated to between the 11th - 8th cent. BC and both were made of an iron-enriched copper. The third one - a single find from the prehistoric hill fort Tabor near Povir (Sezana) - was made of a highly leaded copper. Because of the unusually high iron content (Fe > 13 %) of the first two ingots, and the even higher lead content (Pb> 40%) of the third, these ingots could not have been used for any utilitarian purpose. Finds of similar copper alloys have been already explained in terms of a deliberate attempt to produce iron-rich and lead-rich copper alloys for premonetary uses. A similar role for the specimen from Slovenia is proposed here. Archaeological and chemical characteristics of the ingots are discussed and a metallographic analysis of the Hočko Pohorje ingot is presented. We also report on a true ramo secco ingot found in Semenič.
