Background. Kala-azar is the visceral form of ishmaniasis. The infection is caused by the intracellular parasite Leishmania. It appears endemically. The patient is infected by the bite of the ... sandflies belonging to the genus Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia. Kala-azar is the disease characterised by specific clinical signs and laboratory characteristics. Secondary gastrointestinal and respiratory infections are common. The diagnosis is confirmed directly by isolation of the parasite or indirectly by serologic tests. Conclusions. The mortality of untreated infection is high. Kala-azar is not endemic in Slovenia. Because of people travelling into endemic regions and because of migration from these regions into Slovenia the possibility of kala-azar shouldbe ruled out in suspicious cases.
