  • Prikaz bolnika z dvema primarnima pljučnima karcinomoma in nevrološko simptomatiko: zasevki v možganih in paraneoplastičnim sindromom = Report of a patient with two primary lung carcinoma and neurological manifestations: metastasis in the brain and paraneoplastic syndrome
Dolenc-Grošelj, Leja ; Meglič, Bernard ; Popović, Mara
Background. Cancers of some organs often give metastasis to the brain. Metastasis represent 25% of all brain tumor lesions. Paraneoplastic syndromes affecting the nervous system are remote effects of ... cancer without direct effect of th etumor massor its metastasis. Paraneoplastic syndromes affecting the nervous system are rare, since they affect less than 1% patients with small-cell lung or ovarian cancers. Methods and result. A patient with two primary lung carcinomas (adenocarcinoma and small-cell carcinoma) and with double neurological manifestations is presented: brain metastases of lung adenocarcimoma and paraneoplastic brainstem encephalitis and polyneurophaty asthe remote effect of the small-cell cancer, is presented. Paraneoplastic syndromes of the nervous system are discussed. Conclusions. Despite that praneoplastic syndromes affecting the nervous system are rare, the possibilityof them should be considered when the aetiology of the neurologicalmanifestations is not clear. It should be kept in mind that paraneoplastic syndromes often evolve when the primary tumor is not yet identified.
