Background. The article deals with the risk of transmission of hepatitis B andC virus by blood transfusion. At the Maribor Teaching Hospital we have 13,000 donations per year. We also test blood from ... patients for hepatitis B and C. Methods. We found the data about patients in the Datec computer programwhich is used at the transfusion center and other institutions in Slovenia. Results. In a three-year period we tested 15116 persons for HBsAg and 214 of them were positive (1.41%). Three first time HBsAg positive personswere also treated with blood products. We found frozen samples from these donors and tested HBsAg and anti-HBc antibodies again. The results were negative. Among 8081 persons tested for HCV antibodies 166 were positive (2.05%). Eleven persons with HCV antibodies were treated with blood. Three positive persons received blood before blood donor testing was introduced in 1993. We found transmission in one case. Eight persons were treated with HCV negative blood. Conclusion. We did not find any transmission of hepatitis B and C in the window period after blood donor testing for antibodies to hepatitis C was started in 1993.
