Special emphasis is made ... on the comparison between Slovenia and former Yugoslavia. Methods. A historical overview was done from the study of the Yugoslav and Slovenian health care legislation from1920 to current days; and the data from national health statistics for thesame period were analysed for Slovenia, Yugoslavia and historically also for the Slovenian part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. A similar comparison ofhealth indicators comparing Slovenia with some other countries was done for the 1990 data. Results: The analysis shows that Slovenia compares very well inhealth care indicators with some Western European countries with which it shares a common cultural background. Conclusions. Changes in the Slovenian health care system, which started in 1990 need to take into account good aspects of the previous experience in order to make the effects of the reform work.
