  • Teledentistry and the use of electronic media in dental education = Teledentistry in uporaba elektronskih medijev v stomatološkem izobraževanju

    Background. In the introduction, the paper suggested that electronic media would play an increasingly important role in the delivery of dental education at all stages during a dentist's professional ... life and that many academic and theoretical aspects of dentistry could be taught at a distance. The paper thenwent on to consider the use of electronic media in the delivery of dental continuing professional education via the use of computer-aided learning (CAL)and videoconferencing. It described how in the United Kingdom, central Government funding has made it possible to develop and evaluate a wide range of CAL programmes and how this initiative has developed since 1991. It then described the use of videoconferencing in the provision of clinical advice andin the delivery of dental education using both terrestrial and satellite transmissions. Conclusions. The paper concluded by suggesting that although the increasing use of electronic media would have a profound effect on the wayin which the academic and theoretical aspects of health care and dental education were delivered, it wild still be necessary to train clinicians usinglive rather than "wirtual" patients.
