In order to reveal the reasons for their unsuccessful clinical performance, we examined the prosthetic components and periprosthetictissue of failed prostheses. A method of tissue digestion using sodium hydroxide followed by centrifugation of the digested tissues was used to separate polyacetal and polyethylene particles. Polyacetal particles were verified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and polyethylene particles were identified by fourier-transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the majority of particles were micrometer in size and their morphology was fibril-like or shred-like.
