    Basic principles of quadropole mass sspectrometer (QMS) is described, one of the key elements of energy-resolved mass spectroscopy of plasma and residual gases. From the fundamental Matthieu ... equations which described the movement of ions in quadropole field, stability criteria are derived for the transmission of ions with precisely defined mass-to-charge ratio (M/e) through the spectrometer. Based on the understanding of the QMS principles, two models of operation are described: by contrast resolution M/[triangle]M and by constant [triangle]M, with an emphasis on advantages and disadvantages of respective modes. The construction of modern spectrometers is briefly presented, including ionization chamber, ion optics and counter electronics. Two typical examples of mass spectrometry of plasma are also given.
