  • Ocena kakovosti glasu med pedagoškimi delavci = Assessment of voice quality among teachers
    Soklič, Tanja, 1975- ; Hočevar-Boltežar, Irena
Background. Teachers as voice professionals with a heavy vocal load represent a population at high risk of vocal problems. The goal of our study was to establish the actual prevalence of vocal ... problems in this group and their causes, and to compare a professional's assessment of voice quality to the teachers' subjective assessments. Methods.166 teachers from Ljubljana schools were included. Each participant completed a questionnaire and his/her voice samples were recorded (spontaneous speech, isolated vowels and standard text). Those who had moderate or severe dysphonia or who complained of frequentsubjective voice disorders were invited for a clinical examination. Results. The actual prevalence of vocal problems was 36%; 32% of the participants had subjective voice problems. 33 participants (20%) came for an ear, nose and throat examination. In most of them (91%), an organic cause of voice problems was found. Only in a minority (9%), the cause was diagnosed as functional. Conclusions. In our opinion, learning about correct vocal techniques and vocal hygiene, as well as prevention and therapy of voice disorders, should be included in the studies for future vocal professionals.
