  • Organisational effects on information technology productivity in enterprises : the case of Slovenia
    Hovelja, Tomaž
The study presents the results of a survey among 94 of Slovenia's 1,000 biggest enterprises based on the added value they generate. The aim of the research is threefold: a) to find out if and how ... different organisational characteristics of Slovenian enterprises affect their information technology (IT) usage; b) to explore how the intensity of IT usage affects the productivity of Slovenian enterprises; and c) to analyse and compare the findings on key organisational characteristics and the intensity of IT usage in the developed OECD countries with the findings from this study. My study reveals a number of positive organisational affects on the intensity of IT use in Slovenian enterprises that were seen as key organisational characteristics in other studies conducted in the developed OECD countries. However, most of these positive organisational characteristics of Slovenian enterprises are limited to the cultural and structural dimensions of their organisation and do not extend much into the strategical and process dimensionas they did in the developed OECD countries. Such findings can be explained by the lack of available managerial knowledge on how to strategically use IT in Slovenia to increase the productivity of the enterprise. The deficit in managerial knowledge coupled with strong influencest he employees have on the behaviour of enterprises in Slovenia can thus be seen as the main reason for a lower intensity of IT usage in enterprises as compared to developed OECD and EU countries. Even more importantly, it can be seen as the reason why the benefits from intense use of IT in the enterprise generally do not transform in productivity gains for the enterprise but instead transform in diminished workloads for the employees. Managerial implication with respect to building organisational characteristics that would confront the lack of productivity gains from the intense use of IT are presented based on the findings of this study.
