  • Oligoelementi in vitamini pri kritično bolnih otrocih = Trace elements and vitamins in critically ill children
    Derganc, Metka ; Lazar, Inka
As oxidative stress plays a central role in the pathophysiology of critical illness, the authors focus on antioxidant vitamins and trace elements, which participate in the defence against oxidative ... stress in critically ill children: vitamins C, E and beta-carotene and selenium. zinc, copper and manganese. The most important is selenium, a cofactor for the central antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, alone or in combination with other antioxidants. Most data are derived from studies in critically ill adults and paediatric data from neonates and children with severe burns. The recent development of sophisticated new laboratory methods for determining deficiencies of vitamins and trace elements and the availability of new intravenous preparations of selenium and zine also enable their rationaf use in critically ill children.
