  • The Ljubljana botanical garden - biodiversity of plants = Ljubljanski botanični vrt - biodiverziteta rastlinskega sveta
    Bavcon, Jože
The botanical garden presents the biodiversity of plants of Slovenia and also other parts of the world in one place. The Ljubljana Botanical Garden was founded in 1810 as the Garden of Native Flora ... within the Ecoles Centrales college and has operated continuously since. Botanical gardens play an important part in the conservation of plant species, environmental education, scientific research, conservation of habitats, ethnobotany, and the development of modern tourism. They are actively engaged in the implementationof various international conventions. National botanical gardenshave been assigned the important task of preserving rare and endangeredplant species in the countries where such plants grow. In our gardenwe also try to fulfill all the tasks outlined by Botanical Garden Conservation International. In the last few years, we have been collecting plants in the wild in order to present the majority of Slovene flora. In parlicular, we are raising plants from our water and marsh habitats, our endemic plants, and plants trom our Red List. We also collect seeds of the plants growing in the garden and in nature. We work in the education of young people through the preparation of special Iessons that may be included in school programs or augment school programs.
