  • The pedagogical issues of teaching controversial public issues discussions in secondary social studies classrooms
    Hess, Diana
This paper draws on two studies in secondary social studies to identify a set of pedagogical issues that are important for teachers to consider when teaching their students to participate in ... classroom discussions of controversial public issues or "CPI" (defined as unresolved questions about public policy that spark significant disagreement). Examples of these issues include: how to determine what is a CPI in the first place, whether students or the teacher should select the CPI that will be discussed, if students should be required to participate orally in classroom discussions and how their oral participation should be assessed or evaluated. I argue that it is important for teachers to consider each of the five issues when planning how to teach students to become more effective discussants of CPI. Moreover, the decisions teachers make on these issues are particularly clear illustrations of their personal theories on democracy and democratic education.
