  • Problematika trajno uravnoteženega regionalnega razvoja obmejnih območij v Sloveniji
    Belec, Borut
After gaining its independence in 1991, Slovenia, on 20,256 km [na] 2 of territory and with 2 million inhabitants, acquired an even greater marginal character. It is linked with the neighboring ... countries in as many as three points connecting three countries. The marginal lanscapes, with the exception of the Euroregional area in a part of the Slovene-Italian border, are mostly agrarian, economically less developed, demographically endangered and developmentally problematic, and are as urbanindustrial territories degraded in the sense of landscape and ecology. Dependent on urban centre, various demographic regimes regarding marginal territories have developed in terms of suburban, partly and mainly rural types of landscape, the latter with an expanded variant concerning altitude. In order to achieve a more harmonious development of the marginal areas in the future, the population pattern retaining the existing population will be of vital importance, since, unlike the extremely monocentric concept, it anticipates the development of an extensive urban agglomeration at Slovenian's main traffic junction. The latter directly links four neighboring countries. An appropriate population structure together with the implementation of the principles of sustainable development creates new economic possibilities in the peripheral areas of Slovenia. This paradigm is also incorporated in the accepted ecosocial concept of Slovene agriculture, which places population, cultivation, the cultural image of the landscape and the ecological changeability prior to production interests
