Psoriasis is a multifaceted, chronic, inflammatory skin disease that impacts patients’ quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the disease severity and ...quality of life of psoriasis patients and their nutritional status. The study included 40 patients in the psoriasis group, compared with 40 healthy individuals in the control group. A questionnaire for determination of socio-demographic characteristics and nutritional intake, anthropometric measurements, psoriasis area and severity index (PASI), and dermatology life quality index (DLQI) were used for the assessments. Daily food consumption details were recorded for three consecutive days to determine daily energy and nutrient intakes. Compared to the control group, the frequencies of single participants, primary school graduates, and housewives were higher in the psoriasis group (p < 0.05). The psoriasis patients weighed more and had an increased waist/hip ratio in comparison with the healthy individuals. The energy intake was lower in the psoriasis group (p < 0.01). There was not a significant statistical difference in the intake of proteins, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, Zn, Fe, and Mg supplements between the groups. However, there was an inverse correlation between the daily vitamin E intake and PASI scores (p < 0.05). There was a positive moderate correlation between the DLQI and PASI scores (p < 0.01). Our study indicated that lower daily vitamin E intake levels were associated with the severity of psoriasis. In addition to this, abdominal obesity seems to be another risk factor in psoriasis patients, even if they have a normal body mass index (BMI). An integrated healthcare approach with dermatologists, family physicians, and dietitians is essential to the management of psoriasis.
Myelin is an essential component of the nervous system and myelin damage causes demyelination diseases. Myelin is a sheet of oligodendrocyte membrane wrapped around the neuronal axon. In the ...fluorescent images, experts manually identify myelin by co-localization of oligodendrocyte and axonal membranes that fit certain shape and size criteria. Because myelin wriggles along x-y-z axes, machine learning is ideal for its segmentation. However, machine-learning methods, especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), require a high number of annotated images, which necessitate expert labor. To facilitate myelin annotation, we developed a workflow and software for myelin ground truth extraction from multi-spectral fluorescent images. Additionally, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time, a set of annotated myelin ground truths for machine learning applications were shared with the community.

The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of different root canal filling methods on the C1 root canal anatomy using 3-dimensional (3D) printer technology.
Mandibular molars were scanned ...with cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging. A mandibular molar tooth with a C1 root canal configuration was selected according to images obtained from CBCT technology. The root canals were shaped with ProTaper Universal rotary instruments (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and hand files. After the root canal shaping procedure, the tooth was scanned with micro–computed tomographic imaging, and 80 replicas of the tooth were produced with a 3D printer. Replicas were assigned into 4 groups (n = 20) and were filled using one of the following techniques: a core carrier system (GuttaCore GC; Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), a continuous wave obturation system (Elements Free CW; Kerr/SybronEndo, Orange, CA), a cold lateral compaction technique (CLC), or the injectable cold filling method (GuttaFlow Bioseal GFB; Coltène/Whaledent AG, Altstatten, Switzerland). All specimens were sectioned horizontally at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm from the apices of the specimens. The sections were examined at 32× magnification under a stereomicroscope, and the percentage areas of gutta-percha, sealer, and voids were measured. Statistical analysis of data was performed using multivariate analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significant difference tests (P < .05).
The CW group had the highest mean percentages for void and the least mean percentages for gutta-percha at 2-mm sections (P < .05). A pairwise comparison between the groups showed significantly less void in the CLC and GFB groups and more void in the CW and GC groups at 2 mm (P < .05). In the total area, the CLC and GFB groups showed a significantly lower percentage of gutta-percha and more sealer compared with the other groups (P < .05), and there was no significant difference between the CLC and GFB groups (P > .05).
At the apical part of the canal, the cold lateral compaction and cold injectable filling techniques were more successful compared with the warm gutta-percha filling techniques in C1 root canal configuration.
•Standardization of the root canals is very important to achieve reliable results.•C-shaped root canals (C1) were obtained in the same anatomy using 3-dimensional printer technology.•The apical portion of C1 configuration was the most difficult part for filling.•The lateral compaction technique was superior for filling the apical portion.
In this study, we aimed to examine gender-based differences in coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors, the presence and severity of atherosclerosis, and the distribution of plaque type in ...patients presenting with chest pain.
A total of 1496 patients who applied to our cardiology outpatient clinic with chest pain and underwent computed coronary tomographic angiography (CTA) between August 2020 and October 2021 were included in the study. Plaque characteristics, Agatston score, and Coronary Artery Disease-Reporting and Data System (CAD-RADS) score obtained from the patients' CTAs were compared by gender.
Of the 1496 patients evaluated, 47.9% were female. Coronary atherosclerosis was detected in 35.4% of females and 52.9% of males (P <0.001). Diabetes mellitus 155 (21.8%) vs. 123 (15.7%); P <0.001 and hypertension 271 (38.1%) vs. 249 (32%); P <0.001 rates were higher in females than in males. Plaque burden and high-risk plaque rate were found to be higher in males (P <0.001). Next, the rate of moderate-to-high coronary artery stenosis (CAD-RADS ≥3) was observed at 21.6% in men and 12.2% in women (P <0.001). Agatston score was found to be higher in males than in females for all age groups (P <0.001). The severity of CAD increased sharply with age in females (P interaction = 0.003).
Although female patients demonstrated higher rates of traditional risk factors, the male gender was associated with increased coronary plaque burden, high-risk plaque, CADRADS, and Agatston scores. Therefore, patient-based approaches that consider gender-related differences could provide effective treatment and follow-up.
We compared the management and results of percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) in high surgical risk (HSR) and normal surgical risk (NSR) acute cholecystitis (AC) patients. The patients were divided ...into two groups: 60 patients with NSR and 30 patients with HSR. Pre-PC laboratory values, PC efficiency in terms of AC complications, catheter withdrawal method and duration, catheter-related complications, AC recurrence rate, mortality rate, presence of dyspeptic complaints in definitive PC, and cholecystectomy rate were compared. Technical and clinical success were achieved in 90 (100%) patients and, 85 (94.4%) patients with PC, respectively. The mortality developed in the HSR group; however, it was not seen in the NSR group (p=0.003). Five (83.3%) out of 6 (6.7%) patients with the American Society of Anesthesiology classification system (ASA) IV score developed mortality. With PC, clinical success was achieved in all 8 (100%) patients with suspected perforated cholecystitis and 6 (75%) of 8 patients with suspected emphysematous cholecystitis on abdominal CT in the non-acute abdomen. PC complications were seen in 8 (8.8%) and recurrent cholecystitis in 8 (12.5%) patients. The hospital stay was longer, and the rate of definitive treatment with PC was higher in the HSR group (p=0.019, p=0.008). C-reactive protein and procalcitonin levels were higher in the NSR group (p<0.001, p=0.001). Dyspeptic complaints did not observe in 28 (73.7%) of the 38 patients without operation during the 33.3-month follow-up. The rate was not different between the groups (p=0.713). PC provides high clinical success in AC-related major complications, severe infection, and the presence of serious comorbid diseases. Mortality was observed only in ASA IV patients. The definitive cure rate of PC was higher in patients with HSR.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the clinical features, pregnancy outcome, and treatment of patients with ovarian cancer diagnosed during pregnancy. Methods The present study was a retrospective review ...of 11 cases of ovarian cancer detected during pregnancy. The women were treated and followed up at Selçuk University, Meram Faculty of Medicine, Konya, Turkey, during 2006–2010. Results Approximately half the patients were asymptomatic (5 45.5%) and diagnosed during cesarean delivery (6 54.5%). The histopathologic tumor categories comprised malignant epithelial ovarian tumor (4 36.4%), borderline tumor (4 36.4%), malignant germ cell tumor (2 18.2%), and sex cord stromal tumor (1 9.1%). Nine (81.8%) tumors were classified as stage I. Conservative surgery was performed in 10 (90.9%) patients. A patient with stage IIIC serous papillary adenocarcinoma underwent hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. A patient with dysgerminoma in stage IV died on follow-up. Three infants were born premature; they were followed up in the neonatal intensive care unit with satisfactory outcomes. Conclusion Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for patients with ovarian cancer diagnosed during pregnancy. Tumor staging is possible during pregnancy, but the appropriateness of surgery needs to be considered carefully. Ideally, the treatment strategy should be discussed and structured on an individual basis.
Objective
Most Brenner tumors are benign, with only 1% being malignant. In this study we report on 13 cases with malignant Brenner tumor of the ovary and discuss the clinical, demographic and ...histologic features.
Method
Thirteen patients with malignant Brenner tumor of the ovary who were treated at Selçuk University Gynecology Department over a 6-year period from January 2004 to December 2010 were retrospectively analysed from hospital electronic medical records. Clinical and pathologic findings were reported.
Results
The median age of the study population was 55.69 ± 11.81 years (range 43–79 years). Most of the patients presented with abdominal pain (6/13, 46.2%). The mean size of the ovarian tumors was 9.19 ± 1.34 cm (range 4–16.5 cm). Six patients (46.2%) were in stage III, five (38.5%) in stage I, and two (15.4%) in stage IV. Ten patients (76.9%) received chemotherapy. The mean follow-up was 38.38 ± 23.25 months (range 5–84 months). During follow-up, recurrence was detected in 7 patients (53.8%). The mean recurrence time was 23.8 ± 14.46 months (range 11–48 months).
Conclusion
In our study, we found that diagnosis was at an advanced stage, and recurrence rate was high. The mainstay of treatment is surgical resection, but the exact regimen and benefit of adjuvant therapy remain unknown.
