Croatia and Slovenia were the transit countries on the Balkan route for migrants and refugees from Middle East countries in 2015 and 2016. They had to optimize health care delivery in the special ...circumstances in refugee camps and transit centres. Little is known about health care provision in border camps where a large number of migrants stay for only couple of hours. Previous studies emphasize that language barriers and cultural differences play a central part in the relationship between health workers and migrants inside the transit zone. The aim of the study was to identify specific characteristics of health care provision experienced by primary healthcare providers in order to prepare solutions on how to organise health care in refugee settings.
Twelve thematic interviews were conducted in the middle of the most intense migration movements to the North-West Europe between November and December 2015 with health workers from Croatia and Slovenia. Interview transcripts were read, coded, reviewed, and labelled. We used qualitative content analysis.
Four themes about the health service provision for refugees at Schengen border were identified. The circumstance when mutual understanding is poor and the consultation not successful, cultural differences represent a central barrier. Participants highlighted that the importance of respecting human dignity is crucial for the provision of basic medical care for migrants in transit.
Successful overcoming language barriers, respecting cultural differences, humanity, susceptibility to social deprivation and traumatic experiences are the key factors important for organisation of health care in transit centers and camps. This article gives some useful tips for healthcare workers and policy makers who are participating in health services provision for migrants and other refugees. Health workers should be prepared to work in special working conditions with a lack of resources. Their work would require timely planning and reflection on the organization of more transit camps.
Ethical Committee of the Republic of Slovenia approved the study as a project number 112/02/16.
Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases are responsible for resistance of Gram-negative bacilli to several beta-lactam antibiotics, including those prescribed for treatment pneumonia. To evaluate the ...importance of colonization with E-GNB for the choice of empirical treatment we performed a retrospective case-control study including 156 patients, hospitalized for treatment of pneumonia from 2009 through 2013. Empirical treatment success and in-hospital survival were significantly lower in patients colonized with E-GNB compared to non-colonized (p = 0.002, p = 0.035). When comparing subgroups of colonized patients, treatment success was significantly lower in patients who were colonized with E-GNB resistant to empirical antibiotic (p = 0.010), but not in those colonized by E-GNB susceptible to empirically given antibiotic (p = 0.104). Difference in in-hospital mortality was insignificant in both subgroups (p = 0.056, p = 0.331). The results of study suggest that an anti-E-GNB active antibiotic should be used for empirical treatment of pneumonia in E-GNB colonized patients.
Composites of polyolefin matrices (HDPE and PP) were prepared by melt processing using two commercially available nano ZnO powders (Zinkoxyd aktiv and Zano 20). The mechanical and thermal properties, ...UV-Vis stability, and antibacterial activity of composites were studied. Tensile testing revealed that both nano ZnO types have no particular effect on the mechanical properties of HDPE composites, while some positive trends are observed for the PP-based composites, but only when Zano 20 was used as a nanofiller. Minimal changes in mechanical properties of composites are supported by an almost unaffected degree of crystallinity of polymer matrix. All polyolefin/ZnO composites exposed to artificial sunlight for 8-10 weeks show more pronounced color change than pure matrices. This effect is more evident for the HDPE than for the PP based composites. Color change also depends on the ZnO concentration and type; composites with Zano 20 show more intense color changes than those prepared with Zinkoxyd aktiv. Results of the antibacterial properties study show very high activity of polyolefin/ZnO composites against
regardless of the ZnO surface modification, while antibacterial activity against
shows only the composites prepared with unmodified ZnO. This phenomenon is explained by different membrane structure of gram-positive (
) and gram-negative (
) bacteria.
For many years, in language policy documents in Slovenia, the establishing of a terminology portal that would integrate all available terminological resources was planned. Therefore, we have analyzed freely
accessible Slovenian terminological websites (
Terminologišče
,
Termania
,
Evroterm
) and individual specialized dictionary projects (
Islovar
,
EZS glosar
,
Slovar zavarovalnih izrazov
). These resources have different designs, one or more authors, various number of resources or subject fields, some of them contain definitions and equivalents, so the question arises on how to reasonably combine them in one place. It is very important to determine its primary addressee in the initial phase of planning of the portal since different
terminology users (e.g. subject field experts, translators, proofreaders) have different needs.
Therefore, it is very important to consider how to organize terminological resources and ensure their updating. We find the Croatian
Terminology Portal (http://nazivlje.hr/) which offers a unique search engine for all terminological sources that are a part of larger groups, sufficiently transparent and user-friendly for that purpose.
,
Termania
,
Evroterm
) i pojedinih specijaliziranih rječnika (npr.
Islovar
,
Rječnik EZS
,
To podrazumijeva važnost razmatranja načina organizacije terminoloških izvora i postupke njihova ažuriranja.

Small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) is a rare and lethal tumor, characterized by hypercalcemia and early onset and associated with germline and somatic SMARCA4 variants.
To ...identify all known cases of SCCOHT in the Slovenian population from 1991 to 2021 and present genetic testing results, histopathologic findings, and clinical data for these patients. We also estimate the incidence of SCCOHT.
We conducted a retrospective analysis of hospital medical records and data from the Slovenian Cancer Registry in order to identify cases of SCCOHT and obtain relevant clinical data. Histopathologic review of tumor samples with assessment of immunohistochemical staining for SMARCA4/BRG1 was undertaken to confirm the diagnosis of SCCOHT. Germline and somatic genetic analyses were performed using targeted next-generation sequencing.
Between 1991 and 2021, we identified 7 cases of SCCOHT in a population of 2 million. Genetic causes were determined in all cases. Two novel germline loss-of-function variants in SMARCA4 LRG_878t1:c.1423_1429delTACCTCA p.(Tyr475Ilefs*24) and LRG_878t1:c.3216-1G>T were identified. At diagnosis, patients were ages 21 to 41 and had International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, or FIGO, stage IA-III disease. Outcomes were poor, with 6 of 7 patients dying of disease-related complications within 27 months from diagnosis. One patient had stable disease for 12 months while receiving immunotherapy.
We present genetic, histopathologic, and clinical characteristics for all cases of SCCOHT identified in the Slovenian population during a 30-year period. We report 2 novel germline SMARCA4 variants, possibly associated with high penetrance. We estimate the minimal incidence of SCCOHT to be 0.12 per 1 million per year.
