Employees working in emergency departments (EDs) in hospital settings are disproportionately affected by workplace violence as compared to those working in other departments. Such violence results in ...minor or major injury to these workers. In other cases, it leads to physical disability, reduced job performance, and eventually a nonconducive working environment for these workers.
A cross-sectional exploratory questionnaire was used to collect data used for the examination of the incidents of violence in the workplace. This study was carried out at the ED of the Bahrain Defense Force (BDF) Hospital. Participants for the study were drawn from nurses, support staff, and emergency physicians. Both male and female workers were surveyed.
The study included responses from 100 staff in the ED of the BDF Hospital in Bahrain (doctors, nurses, and support personnel). The most experienced type of violence in the workers in the past 12 months in this study was verbal abuse, which was experienced by 78% of the participants, which was followed by physical abuse (11%) and then sexual abuse (3%). Many cases of violence against ED workers occurred during night shifts (53%), while physical abuse was reported to occur during all the shifts; 40% of the staff in the ED of the hospital were not aware of the policies against workplace violence, and 26% of the staff considered leaving their jobs at the hospital.
This study reported multiple findings on the number of workplace violence incidents, as well as the characteristics and factors associated with violence exposure in ED staff in Bahrain. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of addressing the issue of workplace violence in EDs in Bahrain and can be used to demonstrate the strong need for interventions.
The geometry of weirs is a prime factor influencing hydraulic performance and accuracy. One of the geometric components of weirs, is the situation of its top corners, are they sharp or rounded, and ...what is the most suitable radius of such rounding curves? The present study was conducted to examine the effect of using five different radius of curvature for both the upstream and downstream top corners of a clear over-fall weir on its hydraulic performance and accuracy. Eleven models of wooden weirs were shaped and prepared with five different values of rounding curvature. The prepared weir models were located in a laboratory tilting flume of 13.50 m length, 0.30 m width, and 0.30 m depth. The study was carried out in the Irrigation and Hydraulic Laboratory of the Civil Department, Faculty of Engineering, Assiut University, Egypt. A discharge ranging from 2.0 to 22.0 dm3 s−1 was used, and through 66 experimental runs, all the necessary hydraulic parameters were measured, and recorded. The obtained data were tabulated, analyzed, plotted, and technically discussed. The main results and obtained conclusions proved that when the front weir top edge is curved the discharge coefficient increases up to 8%. Also, when both front, and behind weir top edges are curved the discharge coefficient increases up to 14%. At the same time the discharge coefficient has a maximum value when the radius of curvature in upstream and downstream top corners equals 20% of the height of the weir.
The main aim of the present study was to estimate the gestational age of Egyptian goats by B-mode ultrasound measurement of embryonic or fetal parts throughout pregnancy.
Trans-rectal (TR) ...ultrasonography (7
MHz) was carried out on 15 pregnant Egyptian does at Day 10 post mating on alternate days until Day 25 and then once at 3–5-day intervals until Day 50. Trans-abdominal (TA) ultrasonography (3.5–5
MHz) was carried out on the same animals from Days 25 to 130 at 3–5-day intervals. After imaging the embryo or the fetus, the following parameters were measured: length of the embryo or fetus (CRL), heart rate (FHR), biparital diameter (BPD), trunk diameter (TD), placentome size (PS), umbilical cord diameter (UCD) and femur length (FL).
The average of days at which the embryonic vesicle was first determined by TR and TA ultrasonography was 16.98
±
1.97 and 27.87
±
3.48, respectively. The embryo proper with a beating heart was first determined by TR and TA ultrasonography at an average of 22.36
±
2.66 and 30.36
±
4.75 days, respectively. All the fetal measures were significantly (
P
<
0.0001) correlated with the gestational age. With the exception of fetal heart rate (
R
2
=
0.551), all the measured fetal structures were highly correlated (
R
2
≥
90) with the gestational age. In conclusion, the age of embryo or fetus in Egyptian does can be estimated by ultrasound measuring the crown rump length, biparital diameter, trunk diameter, placentome size, umbilical cord diameter and femur length.
AIM:To determine celiac disease(CD)prevalence and associated manifestations or risk factors in healthy adult Emiratis.METHODS:It is a cross-sectional prospective study, recruiting 1197(573 women and ...624 men)healthy Emiratis between September 2007 and April 2008among those who went to Al Ain Hospital to undertake the prenuptial examination.Test for anti-tissue transglutaminase(tTG)IgA antibodies was used for CD diagnosis.Subjects with positive results in the anti tTG antibodies assay were also tested for anti-endomysial(EMA)IgA antibodies.A structured interview was used to collect basic demographic and clinical recall data including:information on name, contact address, age, gender, education status, previous diagnosis of CD,diagnosis of CD in 1st degree relatives and history of"chronic diarrhea, anemia, headache, hepatitis, diabetes, tumor, and thyroid disorder".RESULTS:Fourteen blood samples(1.17%;14/1197)were seropositive for CD.The latent CD seropositive patients were 13 women and 1 man and therefore the seroprevalence of CD was 1:86(14/1197)for adult Emiratis:1:44(13/573)for women and 1:624 for men.Binary logistic regression revealed that history of chronic anemia(crude OR=7.09;95%CI:2.32-21.61;P=0.003)and being a woman(OR=14.46;95%CI:1.89-110.91;P=0.001)were associated with CD seropositivity.Whereas, the thyroid disorder showed a positive association with CD seropositivity that approach statistical significance(OR=11.30;95%CI:1.32-96.95;P=0.09)and therefore was included in the multiple logistic regression analysis, which showed that CD seropositivity is independently associated only with history of chronic anemia(OR=4.58;95%CI:1.45-14.48;P=0.01)and being a woman person(OR=10.47;95%CI:1.33-82.14;P=0.026).CONCLUSION:Compared to men the CD seroprevalence among women was remarkably higher. The CD association with women and chronic anemia is of importance from a public health perspective.

A case-control study evaluated the relationship between hypertension and socioeconomic and lifestyle factors in Al-Ain city. The survey included 426 hypertensive adults aged 20-65 years attending ...urban and semi-urban clinics and a randomly selected sample of 436 normotensive controls. Hypertension among cases was higher for men, age 40-49 years, non-UAE nationals, urban living, currently married, having children, illiterate, administrative/professional job, living in traditional house and low income. There were significant differences between cases and controls with regard to obesity, raised cholesterol level, low physical activity and family history of heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that obesity, medium/high income, history of diabetes, low physical activity and having 3+ children were significantly associated with hypertension.

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity between 18.1 fb super(-1) and 19.6 fb super(-1) depending on the final state of tau lepton decays, at ... TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted using simplified models describing the pair production and decays of charginos or tau sleptons. For models describing the pair production of the lightest chargino, exclusion regions are obtained in the plane of chargino mass vs. neutralino mass under the following assumptions: the chargino decays into third-generation sleptons, which are taken to be the lightest sleptons, and the sleptons masses lie midway between those of the chargino and the neutralino. Chargino masses below 420 GeV are excluded at a 95% confidence level in the limit of a massless neutralino, and for neutralino masses up to 100 GeV, chargino masses up to 325 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Constraints are also placed on the cross section for pair production of tau sleptons as a function of mass, assuming a massless neutralino. Figure not available: see fulltext.
(ProQuest: ... denotes formulae and/or non-USASCII text omitted; see image).A measurement of the double-differential inclusive jet cross section as a function of the jet transverse momentum p sub(T) ...and the absolute jet rapidity |y| is presented. Data from LHC proton-proton collisions at ... TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb super(-1), have been collected with the CMS detector. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-k sub(T) clustering algorithm with a size parameter of 0.7 in a phase space region covering jet p sub(T) from 74 GeV up to 2.5 TeV and jet absolute rapidity up to |y| = 3.0. The low-p sub(T) jet range between 21 and 74 GeV is also studied up to |y| = 4.7, using a dedicated data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 pb super(-1). The measured jet cross section is corrected for detector effects and compared with the predictions from perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order (NLO) using various sets of parton distribution functions (PDF). Cross section ratios to the corresponding measurements performed at 2.76 and 7 TeV are presented. From the measured double-differential jet cross section, the value of the strong coupling constant evaluated at the Z mass is alpha sub(S)(M sub(Z))=0.1164 sub(-0.0043) super(+0.0060), where the errors include the PDF, scale, nonperturbative effects and experimental uncertainties, using the CT10 NLO PDFs. Improved constraints on PDFs based on the inclusive jet cross section measurement are presented. Figure not available: see fulltext.
