Fungi and oomycetes are important plant pathogens that constantly attacked plants, thus compromising the production of foods worldwide. Streptomyces strains might be useful to control fungal ...pathogens by different mechanism. The in vitro antagonistic activity of non-volatile and volatile metabolites from four Streptomyces strains was evaluated over cultures of phytopathogenic fungi and oomycetes. The non-volatile compounds from Streptomyces strains significantly reduced (44.2 to 92.1%) the growth of aerial mycelium of pathogens. The volatile compounds (VOCs) from Streptomyces strains reduced both aerial mycelium (22.5 to 96.7%) and mycelium growing inside of culture medium (0.0 - 9.4%). The pathogens maintained their capacity to grow normally in fresh culture medium without antagonists after confrontations with antagonist VOCs. The analysis of VOCs by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry revealed different kinds of VOCs included alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, terpenes, terpenoids, thioethers, among others. The most abundant VOCs were trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol (geosmin), 2-methylisoborneol, 2-methyl-2-bornene, 1,4-dimethyladamantane, and 4-penten-1-ol, trifluoroacetate. The antipathogenic activity of nine pure VOCs that had been identified in cultures of the Streptomyces strains alone was evaluated in vitro against phytopathogenic fungi and oomycetes. Trans-2-hexenal was the most effective of these VOCs, inhibiting completely the growth of tested phytopathogens. The volatile and non-volatile compounds from Streptomyces strains effectively reduced the in vitro growth of phytopathogens and they might be used as biological control. Further studies are required to demonstrate this activity on open field conditions.
Teacher job satisfaction is an important aspect of academic performance, student retention, and teacher retention. We propose to determine the predictive model of job satisfaction of basic education ...teachers using machine learning techniques. The original data set consisted of 15,087 instances and 942 attributes from the national survey of teachers from public and private educational institutions of regular basic education (ENDO-2018) carried out by the Ministry of Education of Peru. We used the ANOVA F-test filter and the Chi-Square filter as feature selection techniques. In the modeling phase, the logistic regression algorithms, Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, XGBoost and Decision Trees-CART were used. Among the algorithms evaluated, XGBoost and Random Forest stand out, obtaining similar results in 4 of the 8 metrics evaluated, these are: balanced accuracy of 74%, sensitivity of 74%, F1-Score of 0.48 and negative predictive value of 0.94. However, in terms of the area under the ROC curve, XGBoost scores 0.83, while Random Forest scores 0.82. These algorithms also obtain the highest true-positive values (479 instances) and lowest false-negative values (168 instances) in the confusion matrix. Economic income, satisfaction with life, self-esteem, teaching activity, relationship with the director, perception of living conditions, family relationships; health problems related to depression and satisfaction with the relationship with colleagues turned out to be the most important predictors of job satisfaction in basic education teachers.
Investigations have been conducted during the last three decades regarding chloride penetration and prediction of corrosion initiation. However, few investigations have dealt with corrosion ...propagation and/or residual life predictions, which are also needed for durability forecasting. Therefore, the aim of this investigation is to discuss, based on experimental information from previous investigations, the possibility of linking the degree of degradation (from a load-capacity reduction point of view) to the surface distress (for example, crack width opening) of a corroding reinforced concrete element in a marine environment. An empirical relationship between the residual load capacity of a reinforced-concrete element and the degree of reinforcement radius loss by corrosion was estimated, and a second empirical relationship between the surface crack width and the reinforcement radius loss was established based on available experimental data. Finally, data between the average corrosion penetration and the maximum pit depth were used to propose an empirical relationship that may be applicable to the performance of corroding prestressed-concrete elements.
Objective
Previously, only the HLA–DRB1 alleles have been assessed in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of the present study was to identify the key major histocompatibility complex (MHC) ...susceptibility factors showing a significant association with anti–carbamylated protein antibody–positive (anti‐CarP+) RA.
Methods
Analyses were restricted to RA patients who were anti–cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody negative (anti‐CCP−), because the anti‐CCP status dominated the results otherwise. Therefore, we studied samples from 1,821 anti‐CCP− RA patients and 6,821 population controls from Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The genotypes for ~8,000 MHC biallelic variants were assessed by dense genotyping and imputation. Their association with the anti‐CarP status in RA patients was tested with logistic regression and combined with inverse‐variance meta‐analysis. Significance of the associations was assessed according to a study‐specific threshold of P < 2.0 × 10−5.
Results
The HLA–B*08 allele and its correlated amino acid variant Asp‐9 showed a significant association with anti‐CarP+/anti‐CCP− RA (P < 3.78 × 10−7; I2 = 0). This association was specific when assessed relative to 3 comparator groups: population controls, anti‐CarP−/anti‐CCP− RA patients, and anti‐CCP− RA patients who were positive for other anti–citrullinated protein antibodies. Based on these findings, anti‐CarP+/anti‐CCP− RA patients could be separated from other antibody‐defined subsets of RA patients in whom an association with the HLA–B*08 allele has been previously demonstrated. No other MHC variant remained associated with anti‐CarP+/anti‐CCP− RA after accounting for the presence of the HLA–B*08 allele. Specifically, the reported association of HLA–DRB1*03 was observed at a level comparable to that reported previously, but it was attributable to linkage disequilibrium.
Conclusion
These results identify HLA–B*08 carrying Asp‐9 as the MHC locus showing the strongest association with anti‐CarP+/anti‐CCP− RA. This knowledge may help clarify the role of the HLA in susceptibility to specific subsets of RA, by shaping the spectrum of RA autoantibodies.
•No changes in admissions due to suicidality have been found in the total sample.•Women have required more hospital admissions than men due to suicidality.•Adolescent girls show an increase in ...hospital admissions due to suicide attempts.•The increase in hospital admissions in girls begins in september 2020.
The appearance of the SARS CoV-2 virus and the associated COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with the onset of mental disorders in healthy people and the worsening in those with pre-existing mental conditions. One of the areas that has raised the greatest concern is that of suicidality. Most of the published studies have been carried out cross-sectional or with small samples, without stratifying by age and gender. Thus, the aim of this longitudinal research is to study, in a large population sample of around 6,700,000 inhabitants belonging to the entire region of Madrid (Spain), the admissions in psychiatric hospitalization units due to suicidal attempts along 2019, 2020 and 2021. No clear increase in the number of admissions due to suicidality in the total population have been found. In addition, a higher prevalence in admissions among women is verified. Moreover, stratifying by age and gender, a striking and significant increase in hospital admissions due to suicidality has been observed in the group up to 17 years old, from September 2020 until the end of the study. These results highlight the special vulnerability of children and adolescents, specifically girls, and the need for preventive measures in the face of future pandemics.
The effect of plant extracts (PE; artichoke, celery, beet, onion, garlic, spinach, avocado, oats, and parsley) in the diet of growing pigs under heat stress was investigated. Parameters included ...growth performance, blood constituents, carcass characteristics, organ percentage, quality and sensory appraisal of the pork. The study was performed during the Mexican summer, using 60 pigs. Treatments included the control, to which 0.1% PE, and 0.15% PE were added. The use of PE (0.1 and 0.15%) generated an increase in the average daily gain (ADG, by 10.0% for both treatments), and final live weight (LW, by 6.3% and 6.8%) (p < 0.05). The level of blood albumin at 95 kg was higher when supplementing with 0.1% PE (p < 0.05). At 120 kg LW, creatine kinase values showed a tendency to be different (p = 0.07). Carcass weight increased (p < 0.05) when adding PE. Supplementation with 0.1% PE decreased (p < 0.05) the red/green (a *) hue of the meat, whereas supplementation with 0.1% and 0.15% PE increased the yellow/blue (b *) hue (p < 0.05). The addition of PE improves pig growth performance, and carcass weight by reducing the negative effects of heat stress, without markedly modifying blood constituents, meat quality, and sensory attributes of the pork.
The inclusion of beans in the diet has been recommended for obesity control. However, its beneficial effect varies depending on agroclimatic factors acting during plant development. The ...antiobesogenic capacity of Dalia bean (DB) seeds obtained by water restriction (WR) during the vegetative or reproductive stage of plant growth (50/100 and 100/50% of soil moisture in vegetative/reproductive stage, respectively), during the whole cycle (50/50), and well-watered plants (100/100) was researched. After phytochemical characterization, harvested beans from each experimental unit were pooled among treatments, based on a multivariate canonical discriminant analysis considering concentration of non-digestible carbohydrates (total, soluble and insoluble dietary fiber and resistant starch), phenolic compounds (total phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and condensed tannins) and total saponins, which showed no differences among replicas of each treatment. Obesity was induced in rats (UAZ-2015–36851) with a high fat diet (HFD) for four months. Afterwards, rats were fed with the HFD supplemented with 20% of cooked DB for three months. During treatment, 100/50 beans, improved blood triglycerides, cholesterol, and glucose, and alleviated early insulin resistance (IR) related to inhibition of lipase,
α
-amylase and –glucosidase activity. After sacrifice, a hypolipidemic capacity and atherogenic risk reduction was observed, especially from the 100/50 treatment, suggesting that intake of DB obtained from WR may prevent IR and dyslipidemia.
