Introduction Chagas disease is considered as emerging in the Brazilian Amazon, usually occurring in acute outbreaks. Methods We describe 17 cases of acute Chagas disease in Rio Negro, Amazonas. ...Results There were 15 males (average age, 31.3 years), all positive for Trypanosoma cruzi in fresh blood smear examination, and 14 positive by xenodiagnosis and PCR. The top clinical manifestations were fever, asthenia, abdominal pain, and palpitations. Electrocardiograms featured low-voltage QRS, anterosuperior divisional block, and right bundle branch block associated with anterosuperior divisional block. Conclusions All patients had consumed açaí products from Monte Alegre in the rural area around Santa Izabel do Rio Negro, Brazil.
Background:
Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are neuroendocrine tumors derived from chromaffin cells. More than 30% of patients with PPGL have a hereditary predisposition. To date, at ...least 14 tumor susceptibility genes have been described. Mutations in the succinate dehydrogenase complex iron sulfur subunit B gene
(SDHB)
are more associated with paragangliomas and metastatic disease. Patients who are young, with larger tumors (>6 cm), positive genetic testing (especially
SDHB
) or paraganglioma have a higher risk of metastasis development.
Case Report:
A 14-yr-old boy was referred to investigate severe hypertension and paroxysmal headache, pallor and tachycardia. Biochemical testing for catecholamine-secreting PPGLs showed: 24h urine metanephrines 1.9 µg (normal range, 0.05 to 1.2), plasma normetanephrine 13.3 nmol/L (<0.9 nmol/L), plasma metanephrine <0.2 nmol/L (<0.5 nmol/L), 24h urine norepinephrine 987 µg (14 to 80), 24h urine epinephrine 0 (0.5 to 20 µg) and 24h urine dopamine 391 µg (65 to 400). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 6.5 cm heterogenous and high-vascular mass in right adrenal gland topography. A strong positive uptake was evidenced in the metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy. A selective α

-receptor blocker (prazosin) was started to control blood pressure and adrenergic symptoms. The patient underwent laparoscopic surgery and anatomopathological analysis revealed a 5.5 cm paraganglioma (PASS criteria= 3). The normal right adrenal gland was identified in the histopathology and there was no continuity between normal adrenal gland and neoplasia. After one year of follow-up, the patient is in complete remission. Genetic analysis by Sanger automated sequencing revealed no pathogenic variants in
VHL
and
SDHD
genes. We identified a heterozygous germline synonymous variant c.540 G>A (p.L180=), involving a G>A transition in the last nucleotide of
SDHB
exon 5. This synonymous variant results in alternative splicing of the
SDHB
primary transcript. This germline variant was previously reported in a 12-yr-old patient with isolated jugulotympanic paraganglioma, but it has not been associated with catecolamine-secreting paraganglioma. Neck MRI revealed no abnormalities in our patient.
Conclusion:
We report here a synonymous pathogenic variant in
SDHB
exon 5 associated with an abdominal functioning paraganglioma. Annual screening for multifocal disease (abdominal and neck PPGLs) and malignancy should be performed.
Anopheles albitarsis embryogenesis was analyzed through confocal
microscopy of clarified eggs. Using Drosophila melanogaster as
reference system, the major morphogenetic events (blastoderm,
...gastrulation, germ band extension, germ band retraction, dorsal
closure) were identified. The kinetics of early events is
proportionally similar in both systems, but late movements (from germ
band retraction on) progress slower in An. albitarsis . Major
differences in An. albitarsis related to D. melanogaster were: (1) pole
cells do not protrude from the blastoderm; (2) the mosquito embryo
undergoes a 180º rotation movement, along its longitudinal axis;
(3) the head remains individualized throughout embryogenesis; (4)
extraembryonary membranes surround the whole embryo. A novel kind of
malaria control is under development and is based on the use of
genetically modified mosquitoes. Phenotypic analysis of the embryonic
development of mutants will be imposed as part of the evaluation of
effectiveness and risk of employment of this strategy in the field. In
order to accomplish this, knowledge of the wild type embryo is a
prerequisite. Morphological studies will also serve as basis for
subsequent development biology approaches.
The Cosmic Gems arc is among the brightest and highly magnified galaxies observed at redshift \(z\sim10.2\). However, it is an intrinsically UV faint galaxy, in the range of those now thought to ...drive the reionization of the Universe. Hitherto the smallest features resolved in a galaxy at a comparable redshift are between a few hundreds and a few tens of parsecs. Here we report JWST observations of the Cosmic Gems. The light of the galaxy is resolved into five star clusters located in a region smaller than 70 parsec. They exhibit minimal dust attenuation and low metallicity, ages younger than 50 Myr and intrinsic masses of \(\sim10^6\) M\(_{\odot}\). Their lensing-corrected sizes are approximately 1 pc, resulting in stellar surface densities near \(10^5\)~M\(_{\odot}\)/pc\(^2\), three orders of magnitude higher than typical young star clusters in the local universe. Despite the uncertainties inherent to the lensing model, they are consistent with being gravitationally bound stellar systems, i.e., proto-globular clusters. We conclude that star cluster formation and feedback likely contributed to shape the properties of galaxies during the epoch of reionization. Abridged
We analyzed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood serum from 55 patients with neurocysticercosis (NC) at different clinical stages. According to inflammatory activity in the CSF, three stages were ...identified: (1) reactive, when there was at least an increase in the number of cells; (2) weakly reactive, when significant alterations were found in the CSF, including an increase in gamma globulins, albeit without hypercytosis; (3) non-reactive, when there was neither hypercytosis nor increase in gamma globulins. Nineteen patients had the reactive form; 18 had the weakly reactive form; 18 displayed the non-reactive form. Local immunoproduction was intense in the reactive group, moderate in the weakly reactive group, and absent in the non-reactive group. The specific antibody index was raised in approximately 2/3 of patients with the reactive form, 2/3 in those with the weakly reactive form, and 1/3 in those with the non-reactive form.
(1) the classical CSF syndrome in NC can present both in complete and partial modes; (2) local immunoproduction can occur in weakly reactive forms; (3) a raised specific antibody index can occur in the absence of an inflammatory reaction in the CSF.
The genetic breeding of coffee by conventional methods to obtain new cultivars is time-consuming. Anther culture can yield homozygous lines quickly from bi-haploids. This study used anther cultures of Coffea arabica L. cv. Catuaí Vermelho 99, and tested the effect of silver nitrate (AgNO3) and ethylene in callus-formation induction and bi-haploid seedling regeneration. The anthers were inoculated in MS to which 2 mg L-1 2,4-D had been added with AgNO3 (5 mg L-1) together with ethylene being introduced or not, for different periods (the control, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days). At the end of 12 days, the anthers were transferred to the regeneration medium, to which 0.108 mg L-1 kinetin had been added. Greater oxidation and intumescence were observed in the first days after exposure to ethylene; the cultivar Catuaí Vermelho 99 responded to callus formation and also direct embryogenesis in the presence of ethylene.
