Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by rare types of massive stellar explosion. Their rapidly fading afterglows are often bright enough at optical wavelengths that they are detectable at ...cosmological distances. Hitherto, the highest known redshift for a GRB was z = 6.7 (ref. 1), for GRB 080913, and for a galaxy was z = 6.96 (ref. 2). Here we report observations of GRB 090423 and the near-infrared spectroscopic measurement of its redshift, z = . This burst happened when the Universe was only about 4 per cent of its current age. Its properties are similar to those of GRBs observed at low/intermediate redshifts, suggesting that the mechanisms and progenitors that gave rise to this burst about 600,000,000 years after the Big Bang are not markedly different from those producing GRBs about 10,000,000,000 years later.
FRB 180916 is a most intriguing source capable of producing repeating fast radio bursts with a periodic 16.3 day temporal pattern. The source is well positioned in a star-forming region in the ...outskirts of a nearby galaxy at 150 Mpc distance. In this Letter we report on the X-ray and γ-ray observations of FRB 180916 obtained by AGILE and Swift. We focused especially on the recurrent 5 day time intervals of enhanced radio bursting. In particular, we report on the results obtained in the time intervals 2020 February 3-8, 2020 February 25, 2020 March 5-10, and 2020 March 22-28 during a multiwavelength campaign involving high-energy and radio observations of FRB 180916. We also searched for temporal coincidences at millisecond timescales between the 32 known radio bursts of FRB 180916 and X-ray and MeV events detectable by AGILE. We do not detect any simultaneous event or any extended X-ray and γ-ray emission on timescales of hours/days/weeks. Our cumulative X-ray (0.3-10 keV) flux upper limit of 5 × 10−14 erg cm−2 s−1 (obtained during 5 day active intervals from several 1-2 ks integrations) translates into an isotropic luminosity upper limit of LX,UL ∼ 1.5 × 1041 erg s−1. Deep γ-ray observations above 100 MeV over a many-year timescale provide an average luminosity upper limit one order of magnitude larger. These results provide the so-far most stringent upper limits on high-energy emission from the FRB 180916 source. Our results constrain the dissipation of magnetic energy from a magnetar-like source of radius Rm, internal magnetic field Bm, and dissipation timescale τd to satisfy the relation , where Rm,6 is Rm in units of 106 cm, Bm,16 is Bm in units of 1016 G, and τd,8 in units of 108 s.
The only supernovae (SNe) to show gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) or early x-ray emission thus far are overenergetic, broad-lined type Ic SNe (hypernovae, HNe). Recently, SN 2008D has shown several unusual ...features: (i) weak x-ray flash (XRF), (ii) an early, narrow optical peak, (iii) disappearance of the broad lines typical of SN Ic HNe, and (iv) development of helium lines as in SNe Ib. Detailed analysis shows that SN 2008D was not a normal supernova: Its explosion energy (E almost equal to 6x10⁵¹ erg) and ejected mass ~7 times the mass of the Sun (Formula: see text) are intermediate between normal SNe Ibc and HNe. We conclude that SN 2008D was originally a ~30 Formula: see text star. When it collapsed, a black hole formed and a weak, mildly relativistic jet was produced, which caused the XRF. SN 2008D is probably among the weakest explosions that produce relativistic jets. Inner engine activity appears to be present whenever massive stars collapse to black holes.
Aims. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and broad-line, type Ic supernovae (SNe) are strongly connected. We aim at characterizing SN 2013dx, which is associated with GRB 130702A, through a ...sensitive and extensive ground-based observational campaign in the optical-IR band. Methods. We monitored the field of the Swift GRB 130702A (redshift z = 0.145) using the 8.2 m VLT, the 3.6 m TNG and the 0.6 m REM telescopes during the time interval between 4 and 40 days after the burst. Photometric and spectroscopic observations revealed the associated type Ic SN 2013dx. Our multiband photometry allowed constructing a bolometric light curve. Results. The bolometric light curve of SN 2013dx resembles that of 2003dh (associated with GRB 030329), but is ~10% faster and ~25% dimmer. From this we infer a synthesized 56Ni mass of ~0.2 M⊙. The multi-epoch optical spectroscopy shows that the SN 2013dx behavior is best matched by SN 1998bw, among the other well-known low-redshift SNe associated with GRBs and XRFs, and by SN 2010ah, an energetic type Ic SN not associated with any GRB. The photospheric velocity of the ejected material declines from ~2.7 × 104 km s-1 at 8 rest frame days from the explosion, to ~3.5 × 103 km s-1 at 40 days. These values are extremely close to those of SN1998bw and 2010ah. We deduce for SN 2013dx a kinetic energy of ~35 × 1051 erg and an ejected mass of ~7 M⊙. This suggests that the progenitor of SN2013dx had a mass of ~25–30 M⊙, which is 15–20% less massive than that of SN 1998bw. Finally, we studied the SN 2013dx environment through spectroscopy of the closeby galaxies: 9 out of the 14 inspected galaxies lie within 0.03 in redshift from z = 0.145, indicating that the host of GRB 130702A/SN 2013dx belongs to a group of galaxies, an unprecedented finding for a GRB-associated SN and, to our knowledge, for long GRBs in general.
We present the observations of the afterglow of gamma-ray burst GRB 090102. Optical data taken by the Telescope a Action Rapide pour les Objets Transitoires (TAROT), Rapid Eye Mount (REM), Gamma-Ray ...burst Optical/Near-Infrared Detector (GROND), together with publicly available data from Palomar, Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) telescopes, and X-ray data taken by the XRT instrument on board the Swift spacecraft were used. This event features an unusual light curve. In X-rays, it presents a constant decrease with no hint of temporal break from 0.005 to 6 d after the burst. In the optical, the light curve presents a flattening after 1 ks. Before this break, the optical light curve is steeper than that of the X-ray. In the optical, no further break is observed up to 10 d after the burst. We failed to explain these observations in light of the standard fireball model. Several other models, including the cannonball model were investigated. The explanation of the broad-band data by any model requires some fine-tuning when taking into account both optical and X-ray bands.
X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) is more sensitive to density variations than X-ray absorption radiography, which is a crucial advantage when imaging weakly-absorbing, low-Z materials, or steep ...density gradients in matter under extreme conditions. Here, we describe the application of a polychromatic X-ray laser-plasma source (duration ~0.5 ps, photon energy >1 keV) to the study of a laser-driven shock travelling in plastic material. The XPCI technique allows for a clear identification of the shock front as well as of small-scale features present during the interaction. Quantitative analysis of the compressed object is achieved using a density map reconstructed from the experimental data.
