The LOPES experiment at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has been taking radio data in the frequency range from 40 to 80
MHz in coincidence with the KASCADE-Grande air shower detector since ...2003. Various experimental configurations have been employed to study aspects such as the energy scaling, geomagnetic dependence, lateral distribution, and polarization of the radio emission from cosmic rays. The high quality per-event air shower information provided by KASCADE-Grande has been the key to many of these studies and has even allowed us to perform detailed per-event comparisons with simulations of the radio emission. In this article, we give an overview of results obtained by LOPES, and present the status and perspectives of the ever-evolving experiment.
A new extensive air shower (EAS) experiment has been installed at the laboratory site of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. The main aim of the KASCADE 1 project is the determination of the chemical ...composition in the energy range around and above the knee of the primary cosmic ray spectrum. The main advantage of the new installation is the simultaneous measurement of a large number of observables for each individual event. This is achieved by the combination of various advanced detection techniques for the electromagnetic, the muonic, and the hadronic component of the extensive air showers. Data taking with a large part of the experiment has started at the end of 1995. The estimated accuracy of air shower data is discussed for the various detector components of KASCADE and first very preliminary results are presented.
The flux of cosmic-ray-induced single hadrons near sea level has been measured with the large hadron calorimeter of the KASCADE experiment. The measurement corroborates former results obtained with ...detectors of smaller size if the enlarged veto of the 304 m super(2) calorimeter surface is accounted for. The program CORSIKA/QGSJET is used to compute the cosmic-ray flux above the atmosphere. Between E sub(0) = 300 GeV and 1 PeV the primary proton spectrum can be described with a power law parameterized as dJ/dE sub(0) = (0.15 plus or minus 0.03)Eimage m super(-2) s super(-1) sr super(-1) TeV super(-1). At the lower energy end the proton flux compares well with the results from recent direct measurements.
Tau-pair production in the process \(\ensuremath{\mathrm{e}^ + \mathrm{e}^- \rightarrow \mathrm{e}^ + \mathrm{e}^-\tau^ + \tau^-}\) was studied using data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP2 ...during the years 1997 - 2000. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 650 pb-1. The values of the cross-section obtained are found to be in agreement with QED predictions. Limits on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton are deduced.
In the reaction e+e-→WW→(q1q̄2)(q3q̄4) the usual hadronization models treat the colour singlets q1q̄2 and q3q̄4 coming from two W bosons independently. However, since the final state partons may ...coexist in space and time, cross-talk between the two evolving hadronic systems may be possible during fragmentation through soft gluon exchange. This effect is known as colour reconnection. In this article the results of the investigation of colour reconnection effects in fully hadronic decays of W pairs in DELPHI at LEP are presented. Two complementary analyses were performed, studying the particle flow between jets and W mass estimators, with negligible correlation between them, and the results were combined and compared to models. In the framework of the SK-I model, the value for its κ parameter most compatible with the data was found to be: κSK-I=2.2+2.5-1.3 corresponding to the probability of reconnection \(\mathcal{P}_{\text{reco}}\) to be in the range \(0.31 <\mathcal{P}_{{\text{reco}}} < 0.68\) at 68% confidence level with its best value at 0.52.
Frequency distributions of local muon densities in high-energy extensive air showers (EAS) are presented as signature of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum in the knee region. Together with the ...gross shower variables like shower core position, angle of incidence, and the shower sizes, the KASCADE experiment is able to measure local muon densities for two different muon energy thresholds. The spectra have been reconstructed for various core distances, as well as for particular subsamples, classified on the basis of the shower size ratio
N
μ/
N
e. The measured density spectra of the total sample exhibit clear kinks reflecting the knee of the primary energy spectrum. While relatively sharp changes of the slopes are observed in the spectrum of EAS with small values of the shower size ratio, no such feature is detected at EAS of large
N
μ/
N
e ratio in the energy range of 1–10 PeV. Comparing the spectra for various thresholds and core distances with detailed Monte Carlo simulations the validity of EAS simulations is discussed.
Dehydration/condensation reactions between organic molecules in the prebiotic environment increased the inventory and complexity of organic compounds available for self-assembly into primitive ...cellular organisms. As a model of such reactions and to demonstrate this principle, we have investigated the esterification reaction between glycerol and decanoic acid that forms glycerol monodecanoate (GMD). This amphiphile enhances robustness of self-assembled membranous structures of carboxylic acids to the potentially disruptive effects of pH, divalent cation binding and osmotic stress. Experimental variables included temperature, water activity and hydrolysis of the resulting ester product, providing insights into the environmental conditions that would favor the formation and stability of this more evolved amphiphile. At temperatures exceeding 50 degrees C, the ester product formed even in the presence of bulk water, suggesting that the reaction occurs at the liquid interface of the two reactants and that the products segregate in the two immiscible layers, thereby reducing hydrolytic back reactions. This implies that esterification reactions were likely to be common in the prebiotic environment as reactants underwent cycles of wetting and drying on rare early landmasses at elevated temperatures.
The production of single- and multi-photon events has been studied in the reaction e(+) e(-) --> gamma(gamma) + invisible particles. The data collected with the DELPHI detector during the years 1999 ...and 2000 at centre-of-mass energies between 191 GeV and 209 GeV was combined with earlier data to search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model. The measured number of light neutrino families was consistent with three and the absence of an excess of events beyond that predicted by the Standard Model processes was used to set limits on new physics. Both model-independent searches and searches for new processes predicted by supersymmetric and extra-dimensional models have been made. Limits on new non-standard model interactions between neutrinos and electrons were also determined.

Precise measurements of the radio emission by cosmic ray air showers require an adequate treatment of noise. Unlike to usual experiments in particle physics, where noise always adds to the signal, ...radio noise can in principle decrease or increase the signal if it interferes by chance destructively or constructively. Consequently, noise cannot simply be subtracted from the signal, and its influence on amplitude and time measurement of radio pulses must be studied with care. First, noise has to be determined consistently with the definition of the radio signal which typically is the maximum field strength of the radio pulse. Second, the average impact of noise on radio pulse measurements at individual antennas is studied for LOPES. It is shown that a correct treatment of noise is especially important at low signal-to-noise ratios: noise can be the dominant source of uncertainty for pulse height and time measurements, and it can systematically flatten the slope of lateral distributions. The presented method can also be transferred to other experiments in radio and acoustic detection of cosmic rays and neutrinos.
