The physical state of interstellar gas and dust is dependent on the processes which heat and cool this medium. To probe heating and cooling of the interstellar medium over a large range of infrared ...surface brightness, on sub-kiloparsec scales, we employ line maps of CII 158 mu m, OI 63 mu m, and NII 122 mu m in NGC 1097 and NGC 4559, obtained with the Photodetector Array Camera & Spectrometer on board Herschel. We matched new observations to existing Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph data that trace the total emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We confirm at small scales in these galaxies that the canonical measure of photoelectric heating efficiency, (CII + OI)/TIR, decreases as the far-infrared (far-IR) color, nufunctionof sub(nu)(70 mu m) nufunctionof sub(nu)(100 mu m), increases. In contrast, the ratio of far-IR cooling to total PAH emission, (CII + OI)/PAH, is a near constant ~6% over a wide range of far-IR color, 0.5 < nufunctionof sub(nu)(70 mu m) nufunctionof sub(nu)(100 mu m) <, ~0.95. In the warmest regions, where nufunctionof sub(nu)(70 mu m) nufunctionof sub(nu)(100 mu m) > ~0.95, the ratio (CII + OII)/PAH drops rapidly to 4%. We derived representative values of the local ultraviolet radiation density, G sub(0), and the gas density, n sub(H), by comparing our observations to models of photodissociation regions. The ratio G sub(0)/n sub(H), derived from fine-structure lines, is found to correlate with the mean dust-weighted starlight intensity, left angle bracketUright angle bracket, derived from models of the IR spectral energy distribution. Emission from regions that exhibit a line deficit is characterized by an intense radiation field, indicating that small grains are susceptible to ionization effects. We note that there is a shift in the 7.7/11.3 mu m PAH ratio in regions that exhibit a deficit in (CII + OI)/PAH, suggesting that small grains are ionized in these environments.
We present CII and OI observations from Herschel and CO(1-0) maps from the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) of the Hickson compact group HCG 57, focusing on the galaxies ...HCG 57a and HCG 57d. HCG 57a has been previously shown to contain enhanced quantities of warm molecular hydrogen consistent with shock or turbulent heating. Our observations show that HCG 57d has strong CII emission compared to L sub(FIR) and weak CO(1-0), while in HCG 57a, both the CII and CO(1-0) are strong. We suggest that shock heating of the CII is a viable alternative to photoelectric heating in violently disturbed, diffuse gas. Highly dissipative gas-on-gas collisions may be more common in dense groups because of the likelihood of repeated multiple encounters. The possibility of shock-induced star-formation suppression may explain why a subset of these HCG galaxies has been found previously to fall in the mid-infrared green valley.
Intensive antiplatelet therapy did not reduce recurrent stroke/transient ischaemic attack (TIA) events as compared with guideline treatment in the Triple Antiplatelets for Reducing Dependency after ...Ischaemic Stroke (TARDIS) trial, but did increase the frequency and severity of bleeding. In this pre-specified analysis, we investigated predictors of bleeding and the association of bleeding with outcome. TARDIS was an international prospective randomised open-label blinded-endpoint trial in participants with ischaemic stroke or TIA within 48 h of onset. Participants were randomised to 30 days of intensive antiplatelet therapy (aspirin, clopidogrel, dipyridamole) or guideline-based therapy (either clopidogrel alone or combined aspirin and dipyridamole). Bleeding was defined using the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis five-level ordered categorical scale: fatal, major, moderate, minor, none. Of 3,096 participants, bleeding severity was: fatal 0.4%, major 1.5%, moderate 1.2%, minor 11.4%, none 85.5%. Major/fatal bleeding was increased with intensive as compared with guideline therapy: 39 vs. 17 participants, adjusted hazard ratio 2.21, 95% CI 1.24-3.93, p = 0.007. Bleeding events diverged between treatment groups in the 8-35 day period but not in the 0-7 or 36-90 day epochs. In multivariate analysis more, and more severe, bleeding events were seen with increasing age, female sex, pre-morbid dependency, increased time to randomisation, prior major bleed, prior antiplatelet therapy and in those randomised to triple vs guideline antiplatelet therapy. More severe bleeding was associated with worse clinical outcomes across multiple physical, emotional and quality of life domains.Trial registration ISRCTN47823388 .
We detect widespread C ii 157.7 m emission from the inner 5 kpc of the active galaxy NGC 4258 with the SOFIA integral field spectrometer FIFI-LS. The emission is found to be associated with warm H2, ...distributed along and beyond the end of the southern jet, in a zone known to contain shock-excited optical filaments. It is also associated with soft X-ray hotspots, which are the counterparts of the "anomalous radio arms" of NGC 4258, and a 1 kpc long filament on the minor axis of the galaxy that contains young star clusters. Palomar CWI H integral field spectroscopy shows that the filament exhibits non-circular motions within NGC 4258. Many of the C ii profiles are very broad, with the greatest line width, 455 km s−1, observed at the position of the southern jet bow-shock. Abnormally high ratios of L(C ii)/L(FIR) and L(C ii)/L(PAH 7.7 m) are found along and beyond the southern jet and in the X-ray hotspots. These are the same regions that exhibit unusually large intrinsic C ii line widths. This suggests that the C ii traces warm molecular gas in shocks and turbulence associated with the jet. We estimate that as much as 40% (3.8 × 1039 erg s−1) of the total C ii luminosity from the inner 5 kpc of NGC 4258 arises in shocks and turbulence (<1% bolometric luminosity from the active nucleus), the rest being consistent with C ii excitation associated with star formation. We propose that the highly inclined jet is colliding with, and being deflected around, dense irregularities in a thick disk, leading to significant energy dissipation over a wide area of the galaxy.

The high-resolution nuclear spectrum contains 19 emission lines covering a wide range of ionization. The high-ionization lines show broad, blueshifted emission reaching velocities up to 1700 km s
−1
and FWHM ranging from ∼500 to 1100 km s
−1
. The width of the broad emission and the broad-to-narrow line flux ratios correlate with ionization potential. The results suggest a decelerating, stratified, AGN-driven outflow emerging from the nucleus. The estimated mass outflow rate is 1–2 orders of magnitude larger than the current black hole accretion rate needed to power the AGN. Eight pure rotational H
2
emission lines are detected with intrinsic widths ranging from FWHM ∼125 to 330 km s
−1
. We estimate a total mass of warm H
2
gas of ∼1.2 × 10

⊙
in the central 100 pc. The PAH features are extremely weak in the nuclear spectrum, but a 6.2
μ
m PAH feature with an equivalent width of ∼0.07

m and a flux of 2.7 × 10

is detected. The spectrum is steeply rising in the mid-infrared, with a silicate strength of ∼0.02, significantly smaller than seen in most PG QSOs but comparable to other Seyfert 1s. These early MIRI mid-infrared IFU data highlight the power of JWST to probe the multiphase interstellar media surrounding actively accreting supermassive black holes.
The Spitzer spectrum of the giant FR II radio galaxy 3C 326 is dominated by very strong molecular hydrogen emission lines on a faint IR continuum. The H sub(2) emission originates in the northern ...component of a double-galaxy system associated with 3C 326. The integrated luminosity in H sub(2) pure rotational lines is 8.0 x 10 super(41) erg s super(-1), which corresponds to 17% of the 8-70 mu m luminosity of the galaxy. A wide range of temperatures (125-1000 K) is measured from the H sub(2) 0-0 S(0)-S(7) transitions, leading to a warm H sub(2) mass of 1.1 x 10 sub(9) M unk. Low-excitation ionic forbidden emission lines are consistent with an optical LINER classification for the active nucleus, which is not luminous enough to power the observed H sub(2) emission. The H sub(2) could be shock heated by the radio jets, but there is no direct indication of this. More likely, the H sub(2) is shock heated in a tidal accretion flow induced by interaction with the southern companion galaxy. The latter scenario is supported by an irregular morphology, a tidal bridge, and a possible tidal tail imaged with IRAC at 3-9 mu m. Unlike ultraluminous infrared galaxies, which in some cases exhibit H sub(2) line luminosities of comparable strength, 3C 326 shows little star formation activity ( similar to 0.1 M unk yr super(-1)). This may represent an Important stage in galaxy evolution. Starburst activity and efficient accretion onto the central supermassive black hole may be delayed until the shock-heated H sub(2) can kinematically settle and cool.
Abstract Background Cardiac compression in pectus excavatum (PE) deformity and effect of PE surgery on cardiac function in adults have been debated. We examined the effect of PE correction on right ...heart size and cardiac output. Methods A retrospective evaluation was performed of 168 adult patients who underwent a modified Nuss PE repair with intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography from 2011 to 2014. Seventeen patients with prior PE repair undergoing bar removal acted as controls. Results Mean age was 33.0 years (range, 18 to 71 years). There was an increase in right atrium (15.1%), tricuspid annulus (10.9%), and right ventricular outflow tract (6.1%) size after surgery (all P < .0001). Right ventricular cardiac output measured in a subset of 42 patients improved by 38%. No change in chamber size or cardiac output occurred before and after bar removal surgery in the control group. Conclusions Surgical correction of PE deformity caused a significant improvement in right heart chamber size and cardiac output.
Abstract
We present results from the James Webb Space Telescope Director’s Discretionary Time Early Release Science program 1328 targeting the nearby, luminous infrared galaxy, VV 114. We use the ...MIRI and NIRSpec instruments to obtain integral-field spectroscopy of the heavily obscured eastern nucleus (V114E) and surrounding regions. The spatially resolved, high-resolution spectra reveal the physical conditions in the gas and dust over a projected area of 2–3 kpc that includes the two brightest IR sources, the NE and SW cores. Our observations show for the first time spectroscopic evidence that the SW core hosts an active galactic nucleus as evidenced by its very low 6.2
μ
m and 3.3
μ
m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon equivalent widths (0.12 and 0.017
μ
m, respectively) and mid- and near-IR colors. Our observations of the NE core show signs of deeply embedded star formation including absorption features due to aliphatic hydrocarbons, large quantities of amorphous silicates, as well as HCN due to cool gas along the line of sight. We detect elevated Fe
ii
/Pf
α
consistent with extended shocks coincident with enhanced emission from warm H
2
, far from the IR-bright cores and clumps. We also identify broadening and multiple kinematic components in both H
2
and fine structure lines caused by outflows and previously identified tidal features.
