Information access has been one of the main concerns of lexicography since the first dictionaries were compiled. This paper draws an explicit link between the proposals made from the fields of ...applied linguistics and website accessibility to enhance the users’ experience in consulting online dictionaries. The paper starts with a reflection on two intertwined notions that are relevant for the discussion: Access and accessibility. After that, it focuses on elements connected to two Web Content Accessibility Guidelines principles, namely perceivability and understandability. It reflects on real practices regarding the way in which information is structured in today’s dictionaries, the use of text alternatives, typographic choice, the writing of definitions, and the use of abbreviations, and proposes measures to tackle the identified challenges. The implementation of easy-to-understand language is highlighted as a relevant resource for prospective lexicographic projects.
Slam poetry is a competitive performance in which poets deliver their own, short pieces, and are judged by randomly chosen audience members. This form of performed poetry is an underexplored text ...type in audiovisual translation (AVT). To fill in this gap, this paper provides an introductory account of current practices in the translation of slam poetry, both at local and international competitions held onsite and online. After that, the paper describes the challenges entailed in making slam poetry accessible for the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing by means of intralingual subtitles added to pre-recorded sessions. The focus of the analysis is placed on the translation of literary style constrained by the immediacy inherent to this form of performance, in which speech rates are typically high. Translation challenges and solutions are illustrated with examples taken from a small corpus of four poems. The study is based on the authors’ experience in collaboration with the non-profit organization Associació RED927 Literatura Oral responsible for the main slam poetry event in Barcelona (Spain).
Abstract The digital turn in lexicography has paved the way to new techniques for presenting information in dictionaries. This paper explores the potential of collocational networks (Phillips 1983, ...Williams 1998) as key lexicographical tools to represent information about lexical combinatorics. Collocational networks, which had initially been used as a means of identifying collocations in large corpora, must now be rethought in order to assist non-expert dictionary users in text production by allowing them to find the exact collocates they are looking for, as well as by offering the grammatical information needed to use collocations accurately. We advocate improving networks by incorporating information visualization techniques (Ware 2008, Pham 2012). Specifically, we suggest a number of measures which may be taken to both simplify access to the information provided by raw output from corpora —much of which may be noise for the dictionary user— and to enrich such collocational data by means of visually-explained relevant grammatical information.
Being able to propose a taxonomy of translation techniques has been a long-standing aspiration of translation theorists. By building on previous proposals, this paper presents the HispaTAV typology ...of translation techniques (ToT), a new list specifically designed for subtitling trainees. The aim of the proposal is to increase students’ awareness of the variety of possible solutions to translate segments of the source text, and to promote creativity, a key factor in the development of translator competence. The proposal has been presented to current translation students, who have provided feedback in terms of its usability for learning purposes. Keywords: translation techniques, subtitling, HispaTAV, audiovisual translation, translator competence
