This paper describes ESM-SnowMIP, an international coordinated modelling effort to evaluate current snow schemes, including snow schemes that are included in Earth system models, in a wide variety of ...settings against local and global observations. The project aims to identify crucial processes and characteristics that need to be improved in snow models in the context of local- and global-scale modelling. A further objective of ESM-SnowMIP is to better quantify snow-related feedbacks in the Earth system. Although it is not part of the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), ESM-SnowMIP is tightly linked to the CMIP6-endorsed Land Surface, Snow and Soil Moisture Model Intercomparison (LS3MIP).
The dataset presented here consists of an ensemble of 10 global hydrological and land surface models for the period 1979–2012 using a reanalysis-based meteorological forcing dataset (0.5° ...resolution). The current dataset serves as a state of the art in current global hydrological modelling and as a benchmark for further improvements in the coming years. A signal-to-noise ratio analysis revealed low inter-model agreement over (i) snow-dominated regions and (ii) tropical rainforest and monsoon areas. The large uncertainty of precipitation in the tropics is not reflected in the ensemble runoff. Verification of the results against benchmark datasets for evapotranspiration, snow cover, snow water equivalent, soil moisture anomaly and total water storage anomaly using the tools from The International Land Model Benchmarking Project (ILAMB) showed overall useful model performance, while the ensemble mean generally outperformed the single model estimates. The results also show that there is currently no single best model for all variables and that model performance is spatially variable. In our unconstrained model runs the ensemble mean of total runoff into the ocean was 46 268 km3 yr−1 (334 kg m−2 yr−1), while the ensemble mean of total evaporation was 537 kg m−2 yr−1. All data are made available openly through a Water Cycle Integrator portal (WCI, wci.earth2observe.eu), and via a direct http and ftp download. The second phase of the Global Land‐Atmosphere Coupling Experiment (GLACE‐2) is aimed at quantifying, with a suite of long‐range forecast systems, the degree to which realistic land surface ...initialization contributes to the skill of subseasonal precipitation and air temperature forecasts. Results, which focus here on North America, show significant contributions to temperature prediction skill out to two months across large portions of the continent. For precipitation forecasts, contributions to skill are much weaker but are still significant out to 45 days in some locations. Skill levels increase markedly when calculations are conditioned on the magnitude of the initial soil moisture anomaly.
The aim of this study is to test a land data assimilation prototype for the production of a global daily root-zone soil moisture analysis. This system can assimilate microwave L-band satellite ...observations such as those from the future Hydros NASA mission. The experiments are considered in the framework of the Interaction Soil Biosphere Atmosphere (ISBA) land surface scheme used operationally at the Meteorological Service of Canada for regional and global weather forecasting. A land surface reference state is obtained after a 1-yr global land surface simulation, forced by near-surface atmospheric fields provided by the Global Soil Wetness Project, second initiative (GSWP-2). A radiative transfer model is applied to simulate the microwave L-band passive emission from the surface. The generated brightness temperature observations are distributed in space and time according to the satellite trajectory specified by the Hydros mission. The impact of uncertainties related to the satellite observations, the land surface, and microwave emission models is investigated. A global daily root-zone soil moisture analysis is produced with a simplified variational scheme. The applicability and performance of the system are evaluated in a data assimilation cycle in which the L-band simulated observations, generated from a land surface reference state, are assimilated to correct a prescribed initial root-zone soil moisture error. The analysis convergence is satisfactory in both summer and winter cases. In summer, when considering a 3-K observation error, 90% of land surface converges toward the reference state with a soil moisture accuracy better than 0.04 m³ m−3after a 4-week assimilation cycle. A 5-K observation error introduces 1-week delay in the convergence. A study of the analysis error statistics is performed for understanding the properties of the system. Special features associated with the interactions between soil water and soil ice, and the presence of soil moisture vertical gradients, are examined.
