ProtoDUNE-DP is a <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">6\times 6\times 6\,\,\text{m}^{3} </tex-math></inline-formula> liquid argon time-projection-chamber operated at the CERN Neutrino ...Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the dual phase concept for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) far detector. The photon detection system (PDS) is based on 36 8-in photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and allows triggering on the scintillation light signals produced by cosmic rays and other charged particles traversing the detector. The acquisition and calibration software specifically developed for the ProtoDUNE-DP PDS is described in this article. This software controls the high-voltage power supplies, the calibration system, and the PDS DAQ. It has been developed with Qt Creator and features different operation modes and a graphical user interface. This software has already been validated and used during the ProtoDUNE-DP operation.
This article presents an automated system for optimizing the microwave power coupling to the plasma generated in a proton/deuteron Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) source, based on a specific model ...of a rectangular waveguide triple-stub tuner and the integrated measurement and control electronics, helping to get stable plasma states. The control and improvement of the RF power absorption into the plasma is a complex process, essential for the ion source development and optimization under different operating conditions. A model and a matching algorithm for the triple-stub tuner have been developed and, besides, different methods to accurately measure the power transfer in a waveguide RF system have been studied and deployed in the ESS-Bilbao ion source system. The different parts have been integrated through a controller, which allows to run an automatic plasma matching system in closed loop. The behavior of the system implemented for low and high power regimes has been tested under different conditions: with several load impedances, with plasma inside the chamber, in continuous wave and pulsed wave operation modes, demonstrating power absorption typically over 90% in all the ion source configurations. The developed system allows to achieve significant improvement in the ECR ion source power absorption efficiency, both in continuous and pulsed mode. The automatic tuning unit enhances the system operation finding an optimum solution much faster than manually, also behaving as an adaptive system able to respond in few pulses to ion source configuration changes to maintain the power coupling as high as possible.
•An automated system optimizing plasma and microwave power interaction is presented.•A model and a matching algorithm for the triple-stub tuner have been developed.•Different methods to measure the power transfer have been studied and deployed.•The system works for low or high power regimes under different ion source conditions.•Power absorption of over 90% is achieved in an ECRIS under different setup conditions.

A muon telescope equipped with four multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers of 2 m2 per plane was tested with the muon scattering tomography technique. The telescope was operated during several hours with ...high atomic number materials located at its center with two detector planes on each side. With an intrinsic efficiency above 98%, spatial resolution around 1 cm and detector planes spaced by 45 cm, it was possible to identify the presence of a 5 cm thick tungsten block in 10 min of acquisition. The results obtained after five hours of acquisition are also presented in this communication.

In this study, we demonstrate a strong influence of the working temperature on the counting rate capability of large-area timing resistive plate chambers (RPCs) incorporating industrial flat glass ...electrodes. The effect relies on the sharp dependence of glass resistivity on temperature, approximately one order of magnitude for each 25
°C, allowing a considerable extension of the counting rate capability merely by a moderate warming of the detector.
The results confirm operation at 1.5
kHz/cm
2 for irradiation with gamma photons, and may be extrapolated to 6
kHz/cm
2 for the detection of minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) with a timing resolution below 100
ps σ.

Large Resistive Plate Chamber systems have their roots in High Energy Physics experiments at the European Organization for Nuclear Research: ATLAS, CMS and ALICE, where hundreds of square meters of ...both trigger and timing RPCs have been deployed. These devices operate with complex gas systems, equipped with re-circulation and purification units, which require a fresh gas supply of the order of 6 cm3/min/m2, creating logistical, technical and financial problems.
In this communication, we present a new concept in the construction of RPCs which allowed us to operate a detector at ultra-low gas flow regime. With this new approach, the glass stack is encapsulated in a tight plastic box made of polypropylene, which presents excellent water vapor blocking properties as well as a good protection against atmospheric gases.
The power supply system for the front-end electronics of the HADES resistive plate chamber (RPC) detector, installed at GSI (Darmstadt, Germany), is described. The system has a distributed ...architecture that includes custom low-voltage boards using isolated DC-DC switching converters. These converters are compact and operate at high efficiency. The converters are fitted with input and output electromagnetic interference filters, resulting in very low output noise. Operational tests of the RPC detector demonstrate that the performance of the detector when powered by this system is comparable to that achieved when powered by laboratory bench supplies, proving its suitability for large-scale applications requiring time resolutions better than 100 ps.
The baseline design for the ESS-Bilbao light-ion linear accelerator and neutron source has been completed and the normal conducting section of the linac is at present under construction. The machine ...has been designed to be compliant with ESS specifications following the international guidelines of such project as described in Ref. 1. The new accelerator facility in Bilbao will serve as a base for support of activities on accelerator physics carried out in Spain and southern Europe in the frame of different ongoing international collaborations. Also, a number of applications have been envisaged in the new Bilbao facility for the outgoing light ion beams as well as from fast neutrons produced by low-energy neutron-capture targets, which are briefly described.
