Strategic alliances in the retail sector are based on cooperation in a variety of activities, ranging from supply and marketing to knowledge sharing and branding. For their members, they are a source ...of sustainable competitive advantage. Ever since the 1990s, a growing number of firms from the retail sector have attempted to improve their performance through participation in strategic alliances. The objective of this paper is to explore how participation in strategic alliances influences profitability of firms in the retail sector. A dynamic panel analysis is applied to the data on nearly 3,700 firms obtained from Amadeus, a large firm-level database, for eight countries (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Hungary and Estonia) for the 2007-2012 period. The results of the investigation suggest that participation in strategic alliances positively influences a firm's performance.
Survival of firms requires continuous search for new and a restructuring of the existing competitive advantages. These can come either from firms' internal factors or from cooperation with the ...environment. Cooperation among firms commonly takes place through the formation of strategic alliances. However, such form of cooperation presents only one stage in the integration of business entities. In the long run, strategic alliances can cease to exist or transform into a higher form of association based on capital integration. The objective of this paper is to explore the determinants of capital integration among strategic alliance member firms in retail sectors of several Central and Southeast European countries. Overall, the obtained findings suggest that business entities engage in integration with the aim of reaching hidden knowledge and skills, accessing distribution and supply channels, and developing new products and services. Integration is also driven with the aim of risk diversification and possible better market positioning, achieving the economies of scale, and improving organization and marketing. The opportunistic behavior of partners and limited managerial control represent its strongest barriers.

dalji razvoj ekonomske misli i analize.
osam pisaca i mislioca u razmatranju ekonomskih pitanja: Marka Porcija Katona
Starijeg, Tiberija i Gaja Grakho, Marka Terencija Varona, Lucije Junija
Moderata Kolumele, Tita Lukrecija Kara, Marka Tulija Cicerona i Lucije Aneja

The paper examines and analyses the economic thoughts and concepts in the Qur'an. Research tackles the economic thought associated with particular activities, such as: agriculture, livestock farming, ...fisheries, production, construction, maritime affairs and trade. The approaches to some important issues related to economy are also analysed (ownership, property, inheritance, obligations and contracts), and the fundamental orientation of entrepreneurship and business ethics based on the teachings of the Qur'an is also studied. In the end, the three important economic concepts in Qur'an are examined and analysed: riba, zakat and sadaqah.
Aristotle's contribution to the development of economic thought is analysed in the paper. The paper studies his thoughts and attitudes on the state, slavery, private property, values, exchange, ...trade, money, and interest. As an analytical thinker, inhibited by the historical context and slavery, his greatest achievements were attained in the field of value and money. His distinction between use value and exchange value, as well as the function of money are valid still today.
The paper investigates and analyses the economic thought in ancient China, which can be found in various religious, philosophical scriptures and writings of various writers. The contribution of the ...great sage, philosopher and teacher Confucius is especially researched from the aspect of economic thought. In the golden age of Chinese philosophy, three schools of writers dealt with economic issues: Confucianists, Legalists and Mohists. The basic characteristics of their approach and contribution are analysed. Differences existed in their views, their approach and interpretation of various contentious issues. All interpretations were under a strong influence of the institutional system of the society they lived in.
In ancient Greece the poet Hesiod was a pioneer in economic observations. However, the beginnings of the economic thought which contributed to the economic analysis are first seen in the works of ...Xenophon, Plato and Aristotle. This paper analyses the contribution of Xenophon and Plato to the economic thought. In his work Economics, Xenophon discusses economy, management and administration of property at a microeconomic level. Furthermore, in his"Ways and Means" for the first time in the history of human thought the public finances are discussed. On the other hand, Plato in his works Republic, Statesman and Laws gives theoretical foundations and describes the idea of a perfect, ideal state. The ideal state can only be the state founded on the idea of justice, and the concept of the ideal state relies on the division of labour, which is one of his greatest contributions from the economic-analytical aspect. In trade, profit, interests he saw threats to the ideal state, while the life in the ideal state would be governed by law determining what is allowed and what is not. Plato's economic thought is founded on the whole economy relying on norms, as well as on its static nature, ie.e lack of economic growth.
