The majority of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) are thought to originate from the merger of compact binary systems collapsing directly to form a black hole. However, it has been proposed that both ...SGRBs and long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) may, on rare occasions, form an unstable millisecond pulsar (magnetar) prior to final collapse. GRB 090515, detected by the Swift satellite was extremely short, with a T90 of 0.036 ± 0.016 s, and had a very low fluence of 2 × 10−8 erg cm−2 and faint optical afterglow. Despite this, the 0.3–10 keV flux in the first 200 s was the highest observed for an SGRB by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT). The X-ray light curve showed an unusual plateau and steep decay, becoming undetectable after ∼500 s. This behaviour is similar to that observed in some long bursts proposed to have magnetars contributing to their emission. In this paper, we present the Swift observations of GRB 090515 and compare it to other gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the Swift sample. Additionally, we present optical observations from Gemini, which detected an afterglow of magnitude 26.4 ± 0.1 at T+ 1.7 h after the burst. We discuss potential causes of the unusual 0.3–10 keV emission and suggest it might be energy injection from an unstable millisecond pulsar. Using the duration and flux of the plateau of GRB 090515, we place constraints on the millisecond pulsar spin period and magnetic field.
Abstract Over 90% of Rett syndrome (RTT) cases have a mutation in the X-linked gene encoding methyl CpG binding-protein 2 (MeCP2). A mouse model that reprises clinical manifestations of the disease ...would be valuable for examining disease mechanisms. Here, we characterize physical and behavioral measures, as well as brain region volumes in young adult mice that have mutations in mouse methyl CpG binding-protein 2 gene ( Mecp2 ) to serve as a baseline for other studies. Hemizygous males, which produce no functional protein, exhibit hypoactivity and abnormalities in locomotion, stereotypies, and anxiety reminiscent of the clinical condition. The mutant males also exhibit cognitive deficits in fear conditioning and object recognition relative to wildtypes. Volumetric analyses of male brains revealed a 25% reduction in whole brain volume in mutants relative to wildtypes; regional differences were also apparent. Mutants had decreased volumes in three specific brain regions: the amygdala (39%), hippocampus (21%), and striatum (29%). Heterozygous females, which produce varying amounts of functional protein, displayed a less severe behavioral phenotype. The mutant females exhibit abnormalities in locomotion, anxiety measures, and cognitive deficits in object recognition in an open field. This study provides the first evidence that the abnormal motor and cognitive behavioral phenotype in Mecp2 mice is consistent with specific volume reductions in brain regions associated with these behaviors, and shows how these data parallel the human condition. The Mecp2 mutant mice provide a very good model in which to examine molecular and behavioral mechanisms, as well as potential therapeutic interventions in RTT.
We present comprehensive multiwavelength observations of three gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with durations of several thousand seconds. We demonstrate that these events are extragalactic transients; in ...particular, we resolve the long-standing conundrum of the distance of GRB 101225A (the "Christmas-day burst"), finding it to have a redshift z = 0.847 and showing that two apparently similar events (GRB 111209A and GRB 121027A) lie at z = 0.677 and z = 1.773, respectively. The systems show extremely unusual X-ray and optical light curves, very different from classical GRBs, with long-lasting, highly variable X-ray emission and optical light curves that exhibit little correlation with the behavior seen in the X-ray. Their host galaxies are faint, compact, and highly star-forming dwarf galaxies, typical of "blue compact galaxies." We propose that these bursts are the prototypes of a hitherto largely unrecognized population of ultra-long GRBs, which while observationally difficult to detect may be astrophysically relatively common. The long durations may naturally be explained by the engine-driven explosions of stars of much larger radii than normally considered for GRB progenitors, which are thought to have compact Wolf-Rayet progenitor stars. However, we cannot unambiguously identify supernova signatures within their light curves or spectra. We also consider the alternative possibility that they arise from the tidal disruption of stars by massive black holes and conclude that the associated timescales are only consistent with the disruption of compact stars (e.g., white dwarfs) by black holes of relatively low mass (<10 super(5) M sub(odot)).
We present a multi-messenger measurement of the Hubble constant H0 using the binary-black-hole merger GW170814 as a standard siren, combined with a photometric redshift catalog from the Dark Energy ...Survey (DES). The luminosity distance is obtained from the gravitational wave signal detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) on 2017 August 14, and the redshift information is provided by the DES Year 3 data. Black hole mergers such as GW170814 are expected to lack bright electromagnetic emission to uniquely identify their host galaxies and build an object-by-object Hubble diagram. However, they are suitable for a statistical measurement, provided that a galaxy catalog of adequate depth and redshift completion is available. Here we present the first Hubble parameter measurement using a black hole merger. Our analysis results in , which is consistent with both SN Ia and cosmic microwave background measurements of the Hubble constant. The quoted 68% credible region comprises 60% of the uniform prior range 20, 140 km s−1 Mpc−1, and it depends on the assumed prior range. If we take a broader prior of 10, 220 km s−1 Mpc−1, we find (57% of the prior range). Although a weak constraint on the Hubble constant from a single event is expected using the dark siren method, a multifold increase in the LVC event rate is anticipated in the coming years and combinations of many sirens will lead to improved constraints on H0.
Abstract Background Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with congenital heart disease is usually the result of a large systemic-to-pulmonary shunt, and often leads to right ventricular ...failure and early death. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of PAH among adult patients included in a national registry of congenital heart disease and to assess the relation between patient characteristics and PAH. Methods Patients with PAH associated with a septal defect were identified from the registry. Gender, age, underlying diagnosis, previous closure, age at repair and NYHA classification were recorded. PAH was defined as a systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) greater than 40 mm Hg, estimated by means of echocardiographical evaluation. Results The prevalence of PAH among all 5970 registered adult patients with congenital heart disease was 4.2%. Of 1824 patients with a septal defect in the registry, 112 patients (6.1%) had PAH. Median age of these patients was 38 years (range 18–81 years) and 40% were male. Of these patients, 58% had the Eisenmenger syndrome. Among the patients with a previously closed septal defect, 30 had PAH (3%). Ventricular septal defect (VSD) was the most frequent underlying defect (42%) among patients with PAH and a septal defect. Female sex (Odds ratio = 1.5, p = 0.001) and sPAP (Odds ratio = 0.04, p < 0.001) were independently associated with a decreased functional class. Conclusion PAH is common in adult patients with congenital heart disease. In our registry the prevalence of PAH in septal defects is around 6%. More than half of these patients have the Eisenmenger syndrome, which accounts for 1% of the total population in the CONCOR registry. Whether the prevalence of PAH will decrease in the future as a result of early detection and intervention remains to be awaited.
We present observations of the afterglows and host galaxies of three short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs): 100625A, 101219A, and 110112A. We also report the discovery of the optical afterglow of ...GRB 110112A, which lacks a coincident host galaxy to i > ~ 26 mag, and we cannot conclusively identify any field galaxy as a possible host. To quantify this diversity, we use the sample of 36 Swift short GRBs with robust associations to an environment and classify bursts originating from four types of environments: late-type, early-type, inconclusive, and "host-less". We calculate most likely ranges for the late- and early-type fractions of approximate60%-80% and approximate20%-40%, respectively. Our reported demographics are consistent with a short GRB rate driven by both stellar mass and star formation.
