Written by the foremost specialists in the field of contemporary Spanish letters, the essays in Imagined Truths provide an analysis of stylistic and philosophical manifestations of nineteenth- and ...twentieth-century Spanish literary realism.
This essay seeks to open a dialogue about reading strategies and cultural assumptions with a recent critical study of Emilia Pardo Bazán's 1889 novel Insolation. It references a resurgence of ...appreciation for the practice of Close Reading in the field of English literary studies to propose the significance of reading detail in the novel. A close reading of the key passages of Insolation identified by the article as underlying the novel's tripartite structure calls into question the proposed trajectory of transgressions from linguistic, to sexual, to social. This essay also suggests that our twenty-first century norms of interpersonal relations, with their overwhelming preference for using first names, undermine the careful distinctions and calibrated distances between individuals that comprise the patterns of social interaction communicated by Pardo Bazán, making reading today more challenging and requiring ever greater precision in our reading practices. By highlighting the novel's own codes of linguistic, social, and especially sexual transgression, together with close attention to its pattern of details, centered here on "el bulto bianco" this essay proposes a revision of the structural sequence of transgressions and hence argues for a rereading of the novel with its indeterminacies, gaps, and openendedness.
Spain’s two leading late nineteenth-century authors published short fictional works in the wake of the introduction into Madrid of one of the visual emblems of Spain’s new material reality and ...nascent modernity, the streetcar. Benito Pérez Galdós’s short novel La novela en el tranvía The Novel on the Streetcar highlighted this innovation in Madrid’s urban transport. Published in La Ilustración de Madrid on 30 November and 15 December 1871, within six months of the inauguration of Madrid’s first streetcar line, Galdós’s novella continues to attract critical attention from diverse perspectives. Elizabeth Amann avers that it is “one of the earliest
