The Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) have been used to obtain new Hubble Space Telescope images of NGC 4038/4039 ('The Antennae'). These ...new observations allow us to better differentiate compact star clusters from individual stars, based on both size and color. We use this ability to extend the cluster luminosity function (LF) by approximately 2 mag over our previous WFPC2 results, and find that it continues as a single power law, dN/dL L Delta *a with Delta *a = --2.13 ? 0.07, down to the observational limit of MV --7. Similarly, the mass function (MF) is a single power law dN/dM M Delta *b with Delta *b = --2.10 ? 0.20 for clusters with ages <3 X 108 yr, corresponding to lower mass limits that range from 104 to 105 M , depending on the age range of the subsample. Hence, the power-law indices for the luminosity and MFs are essentially the same. The LF for intermediate-age clusters (i.e., ~100-300 Myr old objects found in the loops, tails, and outer areas) shows no bend or turnover down to MV --6, consistent with relaxation-driven cluster disruption models which predict the turnover should not be observed until MV --4. An analysis of individual ~0.5 kpc sized areas over diverse environments shows good agreement between values of Delta *a and Delta *b, similar to the results for the total population of clusters in the system. There is tentative evidence that the values of both Delta *a and Delta *b are flatter for the youngest clusters in some areas, but it is possible that this is caused by observational biases. Several of the areas studied show evidence for age gradients, with somewhat older clusters appearing to have triggered the formation of younger clusters. The area around Knot B is a particularly interesting example, with a ~10-50 Myr old cluster of estimated mass ~106 M having apparently triggered the formation of several younger, more massive (up to 5 X 106 M ) clusters along a dust lane. A comparison with new NICMOS observations reveals that only 16% ? 6% of the IR-bright clusters in the Antennae are still heavily obscured, with values of AV >3 mag.
Mass accretion onto black holes releases energy in the form of radiation and outflows. Although the radiative flux cannot substantially exceed the Eddington limit, at which the outgoing radiation ...pressure impedes the inflow of matter, it remains unclear whether the kinetic energy flux is bounded by this same limit. Here, we present the detection of a radio-optical structure, powered by outflows from a non-nuclear black hole. Its accretion disk properties indicate that this black hole is less than 100 solar masses. The optical-infrared line emission implies an average kinetic power of 3 × 1040 erg second–1, higher than the Eddington luminosity of the black hole. These results demonstrate kinetic power exceeding the Eddington limit over a sustained period, which implies greater ability to influence the evolution of the black hole's environment.

To examine the association between objectively measured CRF and physical and mental components of HRQoL in a Uruguayan cohort at risk for developing CVD.
Patient data records from 2002-2012 at the ...Calidad de Vida Center were examined. To assess CRF, participants performed a submaximal exercise test. During the evaluation, participants also completed the SF-36, a HRQoL measure comprised of eight dimensions that are summarized by physical and mental component scores (PCS and MCS, respectively). ANCOVA was used to examine the relationship between HRQoL dimensions and CRF. Logistic regression was then used to compare the odds of having a HRQoL component score above the norm across CRF. All analyses were performed separately for males and females with additional stratified analyses across age and BMI conducted among significant trends.
A total of 2,302 subjects were included in the analysis. Among females, a significant relationship was observed between CRF and vitality, physical functioning, physical role, bodily pain, and general health dimensions. However, for males the only dimension found to be significantly associated with CRF was physical health. After adjusting for potential confounders, a significant linear trend (p<0.001) for PCS scores above the norm across CRF levels was observed for females only.
Among females with one or more risk factors for developing CVD, higher levels of CRF were positively associated with the vitality and physical dimensions of HRQoL, as well as the overall PCS. However, among males the only dimension associated with CRF was physical functioning. Future studies should examine this relationship among populations at risk for developing CVD in more detail and over time.
Abstract Introduction Maternal preeclampsia is associated with altered placental development in the first trimester of pregnancy. Confined placental trisomy 16 mosaicism (CPM16) is a genetic ...abnormality of the placenta that is highly predisposing to preeclampsia. We previously demonstrated widespread alterations in DNA methylation in 3rd trimester placentae associated with chromosomally normal early-onset preeclampsia (EOPET) and questioned whether similar changes would be associated with CPM16, making this condition a potential model for studying EOPET-associated changes early in pregnancy. Methods Using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip, 3rd trimester CPM16 placental samples ( N = 10) were compared to gestational age matched controls, and to 1st trimester trisomy 16 placentae ( N = 5). Results DNA methylation differences associated with CPM16 were identified at 2254 CpGs using stringent criteria (FDR < 0.01, Δ β > 0.15). A subset of these differences (11%; p < 0.0001) overlapped those observed in chromosomally normal EOPET using similarly stringent criteria (FDR < 0.01; Δ β > 0.125). Importantly, the majority of EOPET-associated CpGs were significantly altered ( p < 0.05) in CPM16 with a similar Δ β distribution. This was true for CPM16 with ( N = 5) and without ( N = 5) EOPET, although EOPET cases showed a tendency towards larger changes. Of the shared CPM16/EOPET associated changes, three CpGs near two genes ( ARGHEF37 and JUNB ) were also altered in 1st trimester trisomy 16 placentae. Discussion Despite the limited sample size, widespread DNA methylation changes are observed in Trisomy 16 that overlap those seen previously in chromosomally normal EOPET. Hence, Trisomy 16 may provide a model to study the progression of placental changes that occurs in EOPET across different gestational ages.
Abstract We present JWST NIRCam (F356W and F444W filters) and MIRI (F770W) images and NIRSpec Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectroscopy of the young Galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) to ...probe the physical conditions for molecular CO formation and destruction in supernova ejecta. We obtained the data as part of a JWST survey of Cas A. The NIRCam and MIRI images map the spatial distributions of synchrotron radiation, Ar-rich ejecta, and CO on both large and small scales, revealing remarkably complex structures. The CO emission is stronger at the outer layers than the Ar ejecta, which indicates the re-formation of CO molecules behind the reverse shock. NIRSpec-IFU spectra (3–5.5 μ m) were obtained toward two representative knots in the NE and S fields that show very different nucleosynthesis characteristics. Both regions are dominated by the bright fundamental rovibrational band of CO in the two R and P branches, with strong Ar vi and relatively weaker, variable strength ejecta lines of Si ix , Ca iv , Ca v , and Mg iv . The NIRSpec-IFU data resolve individual ejecta knots and filaments spatially and in velocity space. The fundamental CO band in the JWST spectra reveals unique shapes of CO, showing a few tens of sinusoidal patterns of rovibrational lines with pseudocontinuum underneath, which is attributed to the high-velocity widths of CO lines. Our results with LTE modeling of CO emission indicate a temperature of ∼1080 K and provide unique insight into the correlations between dust, molecules, and highly ionized ejecta in supernovae and have strong ramifications for modeling dust formation that is led by CO cooling in the early Universe.
We analyze the expansion of hydrogen-poor knots and filaments in the born-again planetary nebulae A30 and A78 based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images obtained almost 20 yr apart. The proper ...motion of these features generally increases with distance to the central star, but the fractional expansion decreases, i.e., the expansion is not homologous. As a result, there is not a unique expansion age, which is estimated to be 610-950 yr for A30 and 600-1140 yr for A78. The knots and filaments have experienced complex dynamical processes: the current fast stellar wind is mass loaded by the material ablated from the inner knots; the ablated material is then swept up until it shocks the inner edges of the outer, hydrogen-rich nebula. The angular expansion of the outer filaments shows a clear dependence on position angle, indicating that the interaction of the stellar wind with the innermost knots channels the wind along preferred directions. The apparent angular expansion of the innermost knots seems to be dominated by the rocket effect of evaporating gas and by the propagation of the ionization front inside them. Radiation-hydrodynamical simulations show that a single ejection of material followed by a rapid onset of the stellar wind and ionizing flux can reproduce the variety of clumps and filaments at different distances from the central star found in A30 and A78.
SN 1006 is the most attractive target for investigating the physics of collisionless shock waves faster than 2000 . We obtained UV and optical spectra and an H image of a 3000 shock driven by a clump ...of ejecta that has overtaken the blast wave. It is 500 km s-1 faster than the filament studied earlier. We find kinetic temperatures of H, He, C, and N that are consistent with being mass proportional, suggesting little or no energy transfer among species. We also find evidence that the electron temperature is less than 10% of the proton temperature and that the velocity distribution of H atoms is non-Maxwellian. We measure a proper motion of 0 34 0 01 yr−1 for the bow shock, which implies a distance to SN 1006 of 1.85 0.25 kpc, and we discuss the role of plasma turbulence in determining the shape of the velocity distribution.
This study presents the final source catalog of the Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33). With a total exposure time of 1.4 Ms, ChASeM33 covers ~70% of the D 25 isophote (R 4.0 kpc) of M33 and ...provides the deepest, most complete, and detailed look at a spiral galaxy in X-rays. The source catalog includes 662 sources, reaches a limiting unabsorbed luminosity of ~2.4X1034 erg s--1 in the 0.35-8.0 keV energy band, and contains source positions, source net counts, fluxes and significances in several energy bands, and information on source variability. The analysis challenges posed by ChASeM33 and the techniques adopted to address these challenges are discussed. To constrain the nature of the detected X-ray source, hardness ratios were constructed and spectra were fit for 254 sources, follow-up MMT spectra of 116 sources were acquired, and cross-correlations with previous X-ray catalogs and other multi-wavelength data were generated. Based on this effort, 183 of the 662 ChASeM33 sources could be identified. Finally, the luminosity function (LF) for the detected point sources as well as the one for the X-ray binaries (XRBs) in M33 is presented. The LFs in the soft band (0.5-2.0 keV) and the hard band (2.0-8.0 keV) have a limiting luminosity at the 90% completeness limit of 4.0 X 1034 erg s--1 and 1.6 X 1035 erg s--1(for D = 817 kpc), respectively, which is significantly lower than what was reported by previous XRB population studies in galaxies more distant than M33. The resulting distribution is consistent with a dominant population of high-mass XRBs as would be expected for M33.
