A conceptual design is presented of a novel energy-recovering linac (ERL) facility for the development and application of the energy recovery technique to linear electron accelerators in the ...multi-turn, large current and large energy regime. The main characteristics of the powerful energy recovery linac experiment facility (PERLE) are derived from the design of the Large Hadron electron Collider, an electron beam upgrade under study for the LHC, for which it would be the key demonstrator. PERLE is thus projected as a facility to investigate efficient, high current (HC) (>10 mA) ERL operation with three re-circulation passages through newly designed SCRF cavities, at 801.58 MHz frequency, and following deceleration over another three re-circulations. In its fully equipped configuration, PERLE provides an electron beam of approximately 1 GeV energy. A physics programme possibly associated with PERLE is sketched, consisting of high precision elastic electron-proton scattering experiments, as well as photo-nuclear reactions of unprecedented intensities with up to 30 MeV photon beam energy as may be obtained using Fabry-Perot cavities. The facility has further applications as a general technology test bed that can investigate and validate novel superconducting magnets (beam induced quench tests) and superconducting RF structures (structure tests with HC beams, beam loading and transients). Besides a chapter on operation aspects, the report contains detailed considerations on the choices for the SCRF structure, optics and lattice design, solutions for arc magnets, source and injector and on further essential components. A suitable configuration derived from the here presented design concept may next be moved forward to a technical design and possibly be built by an international collaboration which is being established.
The first Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Long Shutdown (LS1) started in February 2013. It was triggered by the need to consolidate the 13-kA splices between the superconducting magnets to allow the LHC ...to reach safely its design energy of 14 TeV center of mass. The Superconducting Magnets and Circuits Consolidation (SMACC) project has principally covered the consolidation of the 10170 13-kA splices but also other activities linked to the superconducting magnets such as the exchange of 18 main cryomagnets, the installation of the additional safety relief devices, the repair of known helium leaks, and other consolidation activities. All these works have been structured in a project, gathering about 280 persons. The opening of the interconnections started in April 2013 and consolidation works were completed by September 2014. This paper first describes the preparation phase with the building of the teams and the detailed planning of the operations. Then, this paper carried out is summarized, and the main results achieved are presented. Finally, it gives feedback from the worksite, namely lessons learnt and adaptations that were implemented, both from the technical and organizational points of view.

As particle accelerator technology advances, rapid cycling machines become more common. An increase in ramping speed of the magnets will draw more pulsed power from the utilities grid up to non ...acceptable levels. An intermediate storage of active and reactive power with fast reaction times and excellent cycling capabilities becomes more and more important. A study has been performed for the conceivable replacement of the existing magnet power supply of the PS (Proton Synchrotron) of CERN. A possible solution is a SMES-based modular compensator system, which allows a step-by-step build-up of the system in turn with test operations during regular shut-down phases while continuing operation of the existing power supply

String 2 is a full-size model of a regular cell in an LHC arc. In the first phase, three dipole magnets and two quadrupole magnets have been assembled in String 2 and commissioning started in April ...2001. By the beginning of 2002 three pre-series dipole magnets will be added to complete the cell. As for its predecessor String 1, the facility was built to individually validate the LHC systems and to investigate their collective behavior for normal operation with the magnets at a temperature of 1.9 K, during transients as well as during exceptional conditions. String 2 is a precious milestone before installation and commissioning of the first LHC sector (1/8 of the machine) in 2004, with respect to infrastructure, installation, tooling and assembly procedures, testing and commissioning of individual systems, as well as the global commissioning of the technical systems. This paper describes the commissioning, and retraces the first powering history.
The paper is intended to introduce power conversion principles and to define common terms in the domain. The concepts of sources and switches are defined and classified. From the basic laws of source ...interconnections, a generic method of power converter synthesis is presented. Some examples illustrate this systematic method. Finally, the commutation cell and soft commutation are introduced and discussed.
