Methods
A comprehensive literature search of the PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases was conducted. Studies that compared TAP block to a control group (no TAP block or placebo) after colorectal resections were included. The effects of TAP block in patients undergoing colorectal surgery were assessed, including the technical aspects of the procedure. Two measures were used to evaluate the effectiveness of postoperative pain control: a numeric pain rating score at rest and on coughing or movement at 24 h following surgery and the opioid requirement at 24 h. Clinical aspects of recovery were postoperative ileus, surgical site infection, postoperative nausea and vomiting, and length of hospital stay.
Results
Sixteen studies were included in the analysis. Data showed that TAP block is a safe procedure associated with a significant reduction in the pain score at rest WMD − 0.91 (95% CI − 1.56; − 0.27);

Conclusions
TAP block appears to provide both an effective analgesia and a significant reduction in opioid use on the first postoperative day after colorectal surgery. Its use does not seem to lead to increased postoperative complications.
Objective: This study examined the relationship between gender and auditory-perceptual evaluation of tracheoesophageal (TE) speech. Method: We collected auditory-perceptual judgments of two features, ...speech acceptability and listener comfort, from normal-hearing young adult listeners (n = 16) who were naïve to TE speech. Auditory-perceptual judgments were made for 12 TE speakers (6 men and 6 women) on two occasions separated by between 7 and 14 days. During the first session, listeners were deceived about the gender of the voice samples presented, and in the second session, listeners were informed of the true gender of the voice samples. Results: The findings suggest that a gender bias exists in perceptions of TE speech, and that female TE speakers tend to be disproportionately penalized when compared to their male counterparts when gender is known. Conclusions: These data provide insights into the potential influence of speaker gender on listener judgments of TE speech and the impact that such factors may have on communication. Our data indicate that listeners rate female TE speaker samples as less acceptable and less comfortable to listen to when the samples are known to be female speakers.
Herbs have been used throughout history to enhance physical performance, but scientific scrutiny with controlled clinical trials has only recently been used to study such effects. The following herbs ...are currently used to enhance physical performance regardless of scientific evidence of effect: Chinese, Korean, and American ginsengs; Siberian ginseng, mahuang or Chinese ephedra; ashwagandha; rhodiola; yohimbe; CORDYCEPS: fungus, shilajit or mummio; smilax; wild oats; Muira puama; suma (ecdysterone); Tribulus terrestris; saw palmetto berries; beta-sitosterol and other related sterols; and wild yams (diosgenin). Controlled studies of Asian ginsengs found improvements in exercise performance when most of the following conditions were true: use of standardized root extracts, study duration (>8 wk, daily dose >1 g dried root or equivalent, large number of subjects, and older subjects. Improvements in muscular strength, maximal oxygen uptake, work capacity, fuel homeostasis, serum lactate, heart rate, visual and auditory reaction times, alertness, and psychomotor skills have also been repeatedly documented. Siberian ginseng has shown mixed results. Mahuang, ephedrine, and related alkaloids have not benefited physical performance except when combined with caffeine. Other herbs remain virtually untested. Future research on ergogenic effects of herbs should consider identity and amount of substance or presumed active ingredients administered, dose response, duration of test period, proper experimental controls, measurement of psychological and physiologic parameters (including antioxidant actions), and measurements of performance pertinent to intended uses.
Canine mammary carcinomas (CMC) are associated with major aggressive clinical behavior and high mortality. The current standard of care is based on surgical resection, without an established ...effective treatment scheme, highlighting the urgent need to develop novel effective therapies. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key regulator of tumor angiogenesis and progression in the majority of solid cancers, including human and canine mammary carcinomas. The first therapy developed to target VEGF was bevacizumab, a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody, which has already been approved as an anticancer agent in several human cancers. The goal of this work was to establish the therapeutic value of MB02 bevacizumab biosimilar in CMC. First, through different in silico approaches using the MUSCLE multiple-sequence alignment tool and the FoldX protein design algorithm, we were able to predict that canine VEGF is recognized by bevacizumab, after showing an extremely high sequence similarity between canine and human VEGF. Further, by using an ELISA-based in vitro binding assay, we confirmed that MB02 biosimilar was able to recognize canine VEGF. Additionally, canine VEGF-induced microvascular endothelial cell proliferation was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by MB02 biosimilar. These encouraging results show a high potential for MB02 as a promising therapeutic agent for the management of CMC.
Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) affects more than one in five women treated for breast cancer, and women remain at lifelong risk. Screening for BCRL is recommended by several national and ...international organizations for women at risk of BCRL, and multiple methods of objective screening measurement exist. The goal of this study was to compare the use of perometry and bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) for early identification of BCRL in a cohort of 138 prospectivelyscreened patients. At each screening visit, a patient's relative volume change (RVC) from perometer measurements and change in L-Dex from baseline (ΔL-Dex) using BIS was calculated. There was a negligible correlation between RVC and ΔL-Dex (r=0.195). Multiple thresholds of BCRL were examined: RVC ≥5% and ≥10% as well as and ΔL-Dex ≥6.5 and ≥10. While some patients developed an elevated RVC and ΔL-Dex, many demonstrated elevations in only one threshold category. Moreover, the majority of patients with RVC ≥5%, ΔL-Dex ≥6.5, or ΔL-Dex ≥10 regressed to non-elevated measurements without intervention. These findings suggest a role for combining multiple screening methods for early identification of BCRL; furthermore, BCRL diagnosis must incorporate patient symptoms and clinical evaluation with objective measurements obtained from techniques such as perometry and bioimpedance spectroscopy.
At present, individuals can live up to 80-120 years, a time much longer than that of our ancestors, as a consequence of the improvements in life conditions and medical care. Thus, the human immune ...system has to cope with a lifelong and evolutionarily unpredicted exposure to a variety of antigens, which are at the basis of profound age-related changes globally indicated as immunosenescence, a multifaceted phenomenon that increases morbidity and mortality due to infections and age-related pathologies. The major changes occurring during immunosenescence are the result of the accumulation of cellular, molecular defects and involutive phenomena (such as thymic involution) occurring concomitantly to a hyperstimulation of both innate and adaptive immunity (accumulation of expanded clones of memory and effector T cells, shrinkage of the T cell receptor repertoire, progressive activation of macrophages), and resulting in a low-grade, chronic state of inflammation defined as inflammaging. It is unknown whether inflammaging, which represents a risk factor for most age-related pathologies, is a cause or rather an effect of the aging process. In this complex scenario, the role of genetic background likely represents a fundamental variable to attain successful aging and longevity. Accordingly, centenarians seem to be equipped with gene variants that allow them to optimize the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules, and thus to minimize the effects of the lifelong exposure to environmental insults and stressors. The remarkable features of the genetics of aging and longevity are reviewed, stressing the unexpected and unusual results obtained regarding such a postreproductive type of genetics.
