At large accelerators, bent crystals are employed to deflect weakly divergent proton beams at the stages of extraction and collimation. We demonstrate that a divergent particle beam may be ...efficiently deflected using a crystal with a focusing entry face. A 180 GeV/c pion beam with divergence near 0.060 mrad, which exceeds the Lindhard angle by a factor of 4, has been experimentally deflected by 0.25 mrad with efficiency near 22%. The proposed focusing crystal may serve as an element of a novel particle optics for secondary-particle beams in the TeV energy region.

A method to characterise the quality of a fused silica surface using a β-source is presented. Two fused silica bars (5×10×400mm3) were fabricated for the Cherenkov detector for proton Flux ...Measurement installed at vacuum chamber of the Super Proton Synchrotron at CERN. The resolution of such device is defined by the collection efficiency of the Cherenkov light, which is produced by relativistic charged particles in the fused silica. Thus, the surface quality of the radiator should be as good as possible to avoid light losses. The method is based on the scanning of the radiator surface with a 90Sr radioactive source and measurements of the Cherenkov light rate, detected by a PMT attached to the quartz bars. The data have been compared with a Monte-Carlo simulation, providing an estimation of the radiator’s probability of the total internal reflection and inefficient area at the edges of the bars.
A deflection efficiency of about 61% was observed for 400 GeV/c protons due to channeling, most strongly along the 〈110〉 axis of a bent silicon crystal. It is comparable with the deflection ...efficiency in planar channeling and considerably larger than in the case of the 〈111〉 axis. The measured probability of inelastic nuclear interactions of protons in channeling along the 〈110〉 axis is only about 10% of its amorphous level whereas in channeling along the (110) planes it is about 25%. High efficiency deflection and small beam losses make this axial orientation of a silicon crystal a useful tool for the beam steering of high energy charged particles.
Abstract
The Aerogel Ring Imaging Cherenkov (ARICH) counter serves as a particle identification device in the forward end-cap region of the Belle II spectrometer. It is capable of identifying pions ...and kaons with momenta up to $4\>$GeV$\>$c$^{-1}$ by detecting Cherenkov photons emitted in the silica aerogel radiator. After the detector alignment and calibration of the probability density function, we evaluate the performance of the ARICH counter using early beam collision data. Event samples of $D^{\ast +} \to D^0 \pi^+ (D^0 \to K^-\pi^+)$ were used to determine the $\pi(K)$ efficiency and the $K(\pi)$ misidentification probability. We found that the ARICH counter is capable of separating kaons from pions with an identification efficiency of $93.5 \pm 0.6 \, \%$ at a pion misidentification probability of $10.9 \pm 0.9 \, \%$. This paper describes the identification method of the counter and the evaluation of the performance during its early operation.

This paper is devoted to an experimental study of focusing and defocusing positively charged particle beams with the help of specially bent single crystals. Four crystals have been fabricated for ...this purpose. The studies have been performed at the CERN SPS in400GeV/cproton and180GeV/cpion beams. The results of measurements of beam envelopes are presented. The rms size of the horizontal profile at the focus was 5–8 times smaller than at the exit of the crystals. The measured focal lengths were 4–21 m. The results of measurements are in good agreement with calculations. Possible applications of focusing crystals in present and future high energy accelerators are discussed.
Results of simulation and measurements on the LEETECH facility with quartz Cherenkov detector prototype which is one of the candidates for the time-of-flight technique implementation at the upgraded ...BES-III and HIEPA (China) experiments are presented. The dependence of the electrons time variation from opening of the collimators is determined. The results of the dependence of time registration of Cherenkov exposure from spatial displacement of the quartz bar with the size 20 ⨯ 40 ⨯ 200 mm are presented. Time resolution of 50 ps was measured during the experiment. The obtained results are in agreement with the expected and demonstrate the possibility of the application of quartz detectors of this type for determining the kinds of the particles.
