The Mini‐RF radar instrument on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft mapped both lunar poles in two different RF wavelengths (complete mapping at 12.6 cm S‐band and partial mapping at 4.2 cm ...X‐band) in two look directions, removing much of the ambiguity of previous Earth‐ and spacecraft‐based radar mapping of the Moon's polar regions. The poles are typical highland terrain, showing expected values of radar cross section (albedo) and circular polarization ratio (CPR). Most fresh craters display high values of CPR in and outside the crater rim; the pattern of these CPR distributions is consistent with high levels of wavelength‐scale surface roughness associated with the presence of block fields, impact melt flows, and fallback breccia. A different class of polar crater exhibits high CPR only in their interiors, interiors that are both permanently dark and very cold (less than 100 K). Application of scattering models developed previously suggests that these anomalously high‐CPR deposits exhibit behavior consistent with the presence of water ice. If this interpretation is correct, then both poles may contain several hundred million tons of water in the form of relatively “clean” ice, all within the upper couple of meters of the lunar surface. The existence of significant water ice deposits enables both long‐term human habitation of the Moon and the creation of a permanent cislunar space transportation system based upon the harvest and use of lunar propellant.

Colon and ovarian cancers can be difficult to distinguish in the abdomen, and the distinction is important because it determines which drugs will be used for therapy. To identify molecular markers ...for that differential diagnosis, we developed a multistep protocol starting with the 60 human cancer cell lines used by the National Cancer Institute to screen for new anticancer agents. The steps included: (a) identification of candidate markers using cDNA microarrays; (b) verification of clone identities by resequencing; (c) corroboration of transcript levels using Affymetrix oligonucleotide chips; (d) quantitation of protein expression by "reverse-phase" protein microarray; and (e) prospective validation of candidate markers on clinical tumor sections in tissue microarrays. The two best candidates identified were villin for colon cancer cells and moesin for ovarian cancer cells. Because moesin stained stromal elements in both types of cancer, it would probably not have been identified as a marker if we had started with mRNA or protein profiling of bulk tumors. Villin appears at least as useful as the currently used colon cancer marker cytokeratin 20, and moesin also appears to have utility. The multistep process introduced here has the potential to produce additional markers for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy.
Conditional motor learning contributes importantly to behavioral flexibility. In previous work, the authors found that fornix transections impaired the ability of macaque monkeys (
Macaca mulatta
) ...to learn conditional motor associations between the nonspatial features of visual stimuli and nonspatially differentiated responses. In the present study, they found that significant 1-trial learning of such associations also depended on the fornix. Furthermore, removal of the hippocampus, subiculum, and subjacent parahippocampal cortex, added to fornix transection, had no effect, thus demonstrating that fornix transections eliminated the contribution of the hippocampal system. In addition, the authors examined the effect of errorless learning and found, in control monkeys, that errors made prior to the 1st correct response retarded 1-trial learning.
It has been proposed that the hippocampal formation is necessary for the acquisition of tasks that require the use of configural representations for their solution, including spatial learning and ...negative patterning. Tests of this influential view have, however, yielded conflicting results. For example fornix or hippocampal lesions, which reliably impair spatial learning, do not reliably impair negative patterning. A problem in interpreting these results has been the lack of controls for factors such as over-responding, excitatory effects of reward, and the possibility of non-configural solutions. At the same time, other studies have pointed to a role in configural learning for parahippocampal regions such as the perirhinal cortex. The present experiments controlled for the above factors and revealed that neither lesions of the fornix nor of the perirhinal/postrhinal cortex in the rat had any effect on negative patterning, although subsequent tests of object and spatial memory demonstrated the functional efficacy of the lesions.
Microarray gene-expression profiles are generally validated one gene at a time by real-time RT-PCR. We describe here a different approach based on simultaneous mutual validation of large numbers of ...genes using two different expression-profiling platforms. The result described here for the NCI-60 cancer cell lines is a consensus set of genes that give similar profiles on spotted cDNA arrays and Affymetrix oligonucleotide chips. Global concordance is parameterized by a 'correlation of correlations' coefficient.
We present new polarimetric radar data for the surface of the north pole of the Moon acquired with the Mini‐SAR experiment onboard India's Chandrayaan‐1 spacecraft. Between mid‐February and ...mid‐April, 2009, Mini‐SAR mapped more than 95% of the areas polewards of 80° latitude at a resolution of 150 meters. The north polar region displays backscatter properties typical for the Moon, with circular polarization ratio (CPR) values in the range of 0.1–0.3, increasing to over 1.0 for young primary impact craters. These higher CPR values likely reflect surface roughness associated with these fresh features. In contrast, some craters in this region show elevated CPR in their interiors, but not exterior to their rims. Almost all of these features are in permanent sun shadow and correlate with proposed locations of polar ice modeled on the basis of Lunar Prospector neutron data. These relations are consistent with deposits of water ice in these craters.
Rhesus monkeys learned a series of conditional visuomotor associations involving two-dimensional "objects" that instructed one of three responses: tapping a touch screen, steady contact with the ...screen for a brief period, or steady contact for a longer period. Relative to controls, fornix-transected monkeys were impaired in the acquisition of new associations and in the retention of preoperatively learned ones. These findings challenge the view that the hippocampal system participates in associative learning only when spatial information is relevant to either the stimulus or the response.
The cross-section for deeply virtual Compton scattering in the reaction ep→eγp has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosities of 95.0 pb−1 of e+p and 16.7 pb−1 of e−p ...collisions. Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the exchanged-photon virtuality, Q2, and the centre-of-mass energy, W, of the γ∗p system in the region 5<Q2<100 GeV2 and 40<W<140 GeV. The measured cross-sections rise steeply with increasing W. The measurements are compared to QCD-based calculations.
