The Treaty of Canandaigua in 1794 marked the beginning of a new relationship between Native Americans and the US government. Previous to this negotiated settlement with the Six Nations Iroquois, the ...US had relied mainly on military threats to claim Native American land. Though the result was the same, another loss of land to the US government, the treaty did involve negotiation and a recognition of the legitimacy of Native Americans' land claims. Native American-US government relations between 1784 to 1794 are discussed.
