► All-particle energy spectrum of cosmic rays between knee and ankle is not a single power law. ► Just above 1016eV the spectrum exhibits a hardening. ► Around 8×1016eV there is a knee-like feature ...in the spectrum.
The energy spectrum of cosmic rays between 1016eV and 1018eV, derived from measurements of the shower size (total number of charged particles) and the total muon number of extensive air showers by the KASCADE-Grande experiment, is described. The resulting all-particle energy spectrum exhibits strong hints for a hardening of the spectrum at approximately 2·1016eV and a significant steepening at ≈8·1016eV. These observations challenge the view that the spectrum is a single power law between knee and ankle. Possible scenarios generating such features are discussed in terms of astrophysical processes that may explain the transition region from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays.

eV. This is ...performed by extending the area covered by the KASCADE electromagnetic array from 200×200 to 700×700
m
2 by means of 37 scintillator detector stations of 10
m
2 area each. This new array is named Grande and provides measurements of the all-charged particle component of extensive air showers (
N
ch
), while the original KASCADE array particularly provides information on the muon content
(
N
μ
)
. Additional dense compact detector set-ups being sensitive to energetic hadrons and muons are used for data consistency checks and calibration purposes. The performance of the Grande array and its integration into the entire experimental complex is discussed. It is demonstrated that the overall observable resolutions are adequate to meet the physical requirements of the measurements, i.e. primary energy spectrum and elemental composition studies in the primary cosmic ray energy range of 10
16–10
18
eV.
We present the results of the search for large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of cosmic rays performed with the KASCADE-Grande experiment at energies higher than eV. To eliminate ...spurious anisotropies due to atmospheric or instrumental effects we apply the east-west method. We show, using the solar time distribution of the number of counts, that this technique allow us to remove correctly the count variations not associated to real anisotropies. By applying the east-west method we obtain the distribution of number of counts in intervals of 20 minutes of sidereal time. This distribution is then analyzed by searching for a dipole component; the significance of the amplitude of the first harmonic is 3.5 , therefore, we derive its upper limit. The phase of the first harmonic is determined with an error of a few hours and is in agreement with the measurements obtained in the 1014 < E < 2 × 1015 eV energy range by the EAS-TOP, IceCube, and IceTop experiments. This supports the hypothesis of a change of the phase of the first harmonic at energies greater than ∼2 × 1014 eV.
Litter characteristics at birth were recorded in 4 genetic types of sows with differing maternal abilities. Eighty-two litters from F₁ Duroc x Large White sows, 651 litters from Large White sows, 63 ...litters from Meishan sows, and 173 litters from Laconie sows were considered. Statistical models included random effects of sow, litter, or both; fixed effects of sow genetic type, parity, birth assistance, and piglet sex, as well as gestation length, farrowing duration, piglet birth weight, and litter size as linear covariates. The quadratic components of the last 2 factors were also considered. For statistical analyses, GLM were first considered, assuming a binomial distribution of stillbirth. Hierarchical models were also fitted to the data to take into account correlations among piglets from the same litter. Model selection was performed based on deviance and deviance information criterion. Finally, standard and robust generalized estimating equations (GEE) procedures were applied to quantify the importance of each effect on a piglet's probability of stillbirth. The 5 most important factors involved were, in decreasing order (contribution of each effect to variance reduction): difference between piglet birth weight and the litter mean (2.36%), individual birth weight (2.25%), piglet sex (1.01%), farrowing duration (0.99%), and sow genetic type (0.94%). Probability of stillbirth was greater for lighter piglets, for male piglets, and for piglets from small or very large litters. Probability of stillbirth increased with sow parity number and with farrowing duration. Piglets born from Meishan sows had a lower risk of stillbirth (P < 0.0001) and were little affected by the sources of variation mentioned above compared with the 3 other sow genetic types. Standard and robust GEE approaches gave similar results despite some disequilibrium in the data set structure highlighted with the robust GEE approach.
In this work, we report measurements on the muon content (E
th
> 230 MeV) of extensive air showers (EAS) induced by cosmic rays with primary energy from 10 PeV up to 1 EeV performed with the ...KASCADE-Grande experiment. The measurements are confronted with SIBYLL 2.3. The results are focused on the dependence of the total muon number and the lateral density distribution of muons in EAS on the zenith angle and the total number of charged particles in the shower. We also present updated results of a detailed study of the attenuation length of shower muons, which reveal a deviation between the measured data and the predictions of the post-LHC hadronic interaction models SIBYLL 2.3, QGSJET-II-04 and EPOS-LHC.
When using smoothing splines to estimate a function, the user faces the problem of choosing the smoothing parameter. Several techniques are available for selecting this parameter according to certain ...optimality criteria. Here, we take a different point of view and we propose a technique for choosing between two alternatives, for example allowing for two different levels of degrees of freedom. The problem is addressed in the framework of a mixed‐effects model, whose assumptions ensure that the resulting estimator is unbiased. A likelihood‐ratio‐type test statistic is proposed, and its exact distribution is derived. Tests of linearity and overall effect follow directly. We then extend this idea to additive models where it provides a more attractive alternative than multi‐parameter optimisation, and where it gives exact distributional results that can be used in an analysis‐of‐deviance‐type approach. Examples on real data and a simulation study of level and power complete the paper.
Person-to-person transmission of a hantavirus was first confirmed during a 1996 outbreak of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in southern Argentina, where Andes virus is endemic. To identify other ...episodes of secondary transmission, we reviewed reports of 51 cases of hantavirus infection from this region (November 1993-June 2005). Nine clusters involving 20 cases (39.2%) were found. Two patients, who had symptoms 3 weeks after they shared risks for rodent exposure, were considered a cluster. The other 8 clusters each began with an index case, which was almost always fatal, followed 19-40 days later by the illness of at least 1 person who had close and prolonged contact with the index case-patient. Person-to-person transmission was considered the probable source of these 8 clusters. The probability of initiating secondary cases was 41% for patients who died versus 4% for those who survived (p = 0.005). Interpersonal transmission of Andes virus infection should be considered even when rodent exposure cannot be definitively excluded.
Using data measured by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, an upper limit to the flux of ultra-high energy gamma-rays in the primary cosmic-ray flux is determined. KASCADE-Grande measures the ...electromagnetic and muonic components for individual air showers in the energy range from 10 PeV up to 1 EeV. The analysis is performed by selecting air showers with low muon contents. A preliminary result on the 90% C.L. upper limit to the relative intensity of gamma-ray with respect to cosmic ray primaries is presented and compared with limits reported by other measurements.
