Several studies highlighted the importance of platelets in the tumor microenvironment due to their ability to interact with other cell types such as leukocytes, endothelial, stromal and cancer cells. ...Platelets can influence tumor development and metastasis formation through several processes consisting of the secretion of growth factors and cytokines and/or via direct interaction with cancer cells and endothelium. Patients with visceral obesity (VO) are susceptible to pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory states and to development of cancer, especially colon cancer. These findings provide us with the impetus to analyze the role of platelets isolated from VO patients in tumor growth and progression with the aim to explore a possible link between platelet activation, obesity and colon cancer. Here, using xenograft colon cancer models, we prove that platelets from patients with visceral obesity are able to strongly promote colon cancer growth. Then, sequencing platelet miRNome, we identify miR-19a as the highest expressed miRNA in obese subjects and prove that miR-19a is induced in colon cancer. Last, administration of miR-19a per se in the xenograft colon cancer model is able to promote colon cancer growth. We thus elect platelets with their specific miRNA abundance as important factors in the tumor promoting microenvironment of patients with visceral obesity.

Directional sensitivity to nuclear recoils would provide a smoking gun for a possible discovery of dark matter in the form of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles). A hint of directional ...dependence of the response of a dual-phase argon Time Projection Chamber (TPC) was found in the SCENE experiment. Given the potential importance of such a capability in the framework of dark matter searches, a new dedicated experiment, ReD (Recoil Directionality), was designed by the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration, in order to scrutinize this hint. Prior to the irradiation with a neutron beam, the ReD TPC underwent a long campaign of characterization and optimization: some selected results are presented in this contribution.
We studied the context of brood reduction through infanticide by communally breeding Guira Cuckoos (Guira guira) in central Brazil. During seven reproductive seasons, we monitored 142 nests from egg ...laying until fledging. Almost all nests (97%) lost eggs through ejection, and chick deaths occurred in 72% of all nests with hatchlings. There was evidence for infanticide in 38% of the nests that exhibited some mortality. We compared egg and chick mortality in the early part of the season with the later part, when insect abundance declines, but found no significant differences. Less than one-third of all nests monitored showed asynchronous hatching of eggs, and in those that did, chick death was not in reverse hatch order. Although there are several plausible explanations for infanticide, we highlight one likely candidate, which is its interpretation as a sexually selected trait where individuals gain reproductive benefits by provoking the group's nesting failure.
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a myeloid neoplasm characterized by a clonal proliferation of CD1a+/CD207+ dendritic cells. Although individuals of any age can be affected, the disease is most ...common in infants younger than 5 years of age, especially males. A wide range of manifestations, from asymptomatic to aggressive, have been described, along with multiorgan involvement. Even though the majority of bone lesions are observed, skin, lymph nodes, brain and lungs can also be involved. The involvement of hematopoietic system, including bone marrow, liver and spleen, is less frequent yet associated with worse prognosis, due to a worse treatment response. Diagnosis of LCH is based on the integration of clinical, laboratory, and radiological data; however, only histopathological examination might confirm it. As far as the spleen involvement is concerned, according to literature, it has been reported in about 15% patients with multisystem involvement, nonetheless only a few cases show parenchymal lesions. The present study reports the case of an infant with LCH with multisystem involvement, including bone, skin, liver, and spleen, with evidence of parenchymal lesions.

Directional sensitivity to nuclear recoils could provide a smoking gun for a possible discovery of dark matter in the form of WIMPs. A hint of directional dependence of the response of a dual-phase ...liquid argon Time Projection Chamber was found in the SCENE experiment. Given the potential importance of such a capability in the frame work of dark matter searches, a new dedicated experiment, ReD (Recoil Directionality), was designed in the framework of the DarkSide Collaboration, in order to scrutinize this hint. This contribution will describe the performance of the detectors achieved during the first test-beam, the current status of ReD and the perspectives for physics measurements during the forthcoming beam-time.
Abstract Objective Patients undergoing cardiac surgery are at risk of perioperative low cardiac output syndrome due to postoperative myocardial dysfunction. Myocardial dysfunction in patients ...undergoing cardiac surgery is a potential indication for the use of levosimendan, a calcium sensitizer with three beneficial cardiovascular effects (inotropic, vasodilatory and anti-inflammatory), which appears effective in improving clinically relevant outcomes. Design Double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter randomized trial. Setting Tertiary care hospitals. Interventions Cardiac surgery patients (n=1,000) with postoperative myocardial dysfunction(defined as: patients with intra-aortic balloon pump and/or high-dose standard inotropic support) will be randomized to receive a continuous infusion of either levosimendan (0.05-0.2 μg/kg/min) or placebo for 24-48 hours. Measurements and main results The primary endpoint will be 30-day mortality. Secondary endpoints will be mortality at 1 year, time on mechanical ventilation, acute kidney injury, decision to stop the study drug due to adverse events or to start open label levosimendan, length of intensive care unit and hospital stay. We will test the hypothesis that levosimendan reduce 30-day mortality in cardiac surgery patients with postoperative myocardial dysfunction. Conclusions This trial is planned to determine whether levosimendan could improve survival in patients with postoperative low cardiac output syndrome. The results of this double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial may provide important insights into the management of low cardiac output in cardiac surgery.
