Summary
Length–weight relationships for Alburnus arborella, Esox cisalpinus and Scardinius hesperidicus from Trasimeno Lake are provided. A total of 4,205 specimens were collected for examination ...from 2008 to 2014 throughout the lake by means of electrofishing and nets. For all species the value of b ranged from 2.887 for Esox cisalpinus males to 3.115 for Scardinius hesperidicus. The study provides the first reference of length–weight relationships for the three species. A new maximum total length is also reported for E. cisalpinus.
The age, growth and body condition of the big-scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) population of Lake Trasimeno were investigated. In total, 3998 specimens were collected during the study and five age ...classes (from 0+ to 4+) were identified. From a subsample of 1017 specimens, there were 583 females, 411 males and 23 juveniles. The equations between total length (TL) and weight (W) were: log 10W = −2.326 + 3.139log 10TL for males and log 10W = −2.366 + 3.168log 10TL for females. There were highly significant differences between the sexes and for both sexes the value of b (slope of the log (TL-W regression) was greater than 3 (3.139 for males and 3.168 for females), indicating positive allometric growth. The parameters of the theoretical growth curve were: TLt = 10.03 cm; k = 0.18 yr-1, t0 = − 0.443 yr and Φ′ = 1.65. Monthly trends of overall condition and the gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated that the reproductive period occurred from March to September. Analysis of back-calculated lengths indicated the occurrence of a reverse Lee’s phenomenon. This could be a symptom of predation or competition, with consequences for young specimens with slower growth and smaller size.
L’âge, la croissance et la condition physique de la population d’athérine (Atherina boyeri) du lac Trasimène ont été étudiés. Au total, 3998 échantillons ont été prélevés au cours de l’étude et cinq classes d’âge (de 0+ à 4+) ont été identifiées. D’un sous-échantillon de 1017 spécimens le sexe a été déterminé, soit 583 femelles, 411 mâles et 23 juvéniles. Les équations entre la longueur totale ((TL) et le poids (W) sont : log 10W = −2,326 + 3,139log 10TL pour les mâles et log 10W = −2,366 + 3,168log 10TL pour les femelles. Il y a une différence très significative entre les sexes et pour les deux sexes la valeur de b (pente de la régression) est supérieure à 3 (3,139 pour les mâles et 3,168 pour les femelles), ce qui indique une croissance allométrique positive. Les paramètres de la courbe de croissance théorique sont : TLt = 10,03 cm; k = 0,18 yr-1, t0 = − 0,443 yr et Φ′ = 1,65. Les tendances mensuelles de l’état général et de l’indice gonado-somatique (GSI) indiquent que la période de reproduction a eu lieu de mars à septembre. L’analyse des longueurs rétro-calculées indique la présence d’un phénomène de Lee inversé. Ce pourrait être un symptôme de la prédation ou de la concurrence ayant des conséquences sur les jeunes spécimens à croissance plus lente et de plus petite taille.
Summary
The aim of this study was analysis of the data on the reproductive biology of the endemic Esox cisalpinus from Lake Trasimeno (central Italy). Data were collected with gillnets (mesh sizes ...50–100 mm) from 2010 to 2014 during the reproductive period of the species. Fish age was assessed by scalimetric method and their condition evaluated by relative condition factor. Gonado‐Somatic Index, fecundity, relative fecundity and egg sizes were calculated. A total of 1,543 specimens (862 females, 681 males) ranging in size from 28.0 to 103.0 cm were examined. Age composition ranged from 2+ to 12+. Both males and females matured at 2 years of age, at 28 cm total length. Fecundity ranged from 1,540 to 160,300 eggs; mean relative fecundity was 18,815 eggs/kg. Males and females were all found to be in good condition, with the relative fecundity increasing with improvements in their body condition.
The aim of the research was to test relative weight (Wr), a condition index which allows evaluation of fish well-being, as a tool to investigate the impact of the presence of non native species (NNS) ...on the condition of the key native species (NS) of the Tiber River basin (Italy): Barbustyberinus Bonaparte, Leuciscus cephalus (Linnaeus), Leuciscus lucumonis Bianco, Rutilus rubilio (Bonaparte) and Telestes muticellus (Bonaparte). By means of Canonical Correlation Analysis, data from 130 sampling sites, distributed throughout Tiber River basin, were examined. Wr of NS was related to densities of NNS and to environmental variables. Moreover, the correlation between Wr of NS and density of NNS was investigated through linear regression analysis and covariance analysis. Preliminary results encourage the use of Wr as a tool to assess the relationship between NS and ecological factors (such as the presence of NNS) and to explain the changes that occur along the longitudinal gradient of a river.
Le but de cette recherche était de tester le poids relatif (Wr), un indice de condition qui permet l'évaluation du bien-être des poissons, comme outil pour étudier l'impact de la présence d'espèces non indigènes (NNS) sur l'état des espèces natives clés (NS) du bassin du Tibre (Italie) : Barbus tyberinus Bonaparte, Leuciscus cephalus (Linné), Leuciscus lucumonis Bianco, Rutilus rubilio (Bonaparte) et Telestes muticellus (Bonaparte). Par le biais de l'analyse de corrélation canonique, les données de 130 sites d'échantillonnage, répartis tout au long du bassin de la rivière Tibre, ont été examinés. Le Wr des NS a été relié à des densités de NNS et aux variables environnementales. Par ailleurs, la corrélation entre Wr des NS et de la densité de NNS a été étudiée par analyse de régression linéaire et analyse de covariance. Les résultats préliminaires incitent à l'utilisation de Wr comme un outil pour évaluer la relation entre les NS et les facteurs écologiques (tels que la présence de NNS) et pour expliquer les changements qui se produisent le long du gradient longitudinal d'une rivière.
In this study, the population structure, growth parameters and condition of chub, Squalius squalus, from the Assino Creek, a tributary of the River Tiber, were investigated. A total of 1311 specimens ...were caught monthly from March 2008 to May 2009 by electrofishing. Total length (TL ± 0.1 cm) and weight (W ± 0.1 g) were recorded; age estimation was based on scalimetry and sex was determined by macroscopic observation of the gonads. Age composition ranged from 0+ to 11+ . Total length varied from a minimum of 4.1 cm to a maximum of 48.8 cm, for a weight of 0.5 g and 1233.0 g, respectively. Length-weight regression was log 10W = −2.201 + 3.127log 10TL for males and log 10W = −2.273 + 3.190log 10TL for females. Previous growth was determined with back-calculation from scale measurements using the non-linear Body Proportional Hypothesis. Theoretical length growth was estimated with von Bertalanffy’s model. Condition was evaluated by relative weight. In Italy there are few available data about the biology of Squalius squalus: the aim of this study was therefore to fill this lack of information by investigating some important aspects of the growth of the population in Assino Creek.
Dans cette étude, la structure de la population, les paramètres de croissance et la condition du chevesne Squalius squalus du ruisseau Assino, un tributaire du Tibre, ont été analysés. Un total de 1311 individus a été capturé mensuellement de mars 2008 à mai 2009 par pêche électrique. La longueur totale (TL ± 0,1 cm) et le poids (W ± 0,1 g) ont été enregistrés, l’estimation de l’âge est faite par scalimétrie et le sexe est déterminé par observation macroscopique des gonades. La composition en âge va de 0+ à 11+ . La longueur totale varie de 4,1 cm à 48,8 cm pour un poids de 0,5 g à 1233,0 g respectivement. La relation taille-poids est log 10W = −2,201 + 3,127log 10TL pour les mâles et log 10W = −2,273 + 3,190log 10TL pour les femelles. La croissance passée a été déterminée par rétro-calcul à partir des mesures sur écailles en utilisant le modèle non-linéaire BPH. La longueur théorique a été estimée par le modèle de von Bertalanffy. La condition a été estimée par le poids relatif. En Italie peu de données sont disponibles sur la biologie de Squalius squalus : le but de cette étude a donc été de combler ce manque d’information en étudiant quelques aspects importants de la croissance de la population du ruisseau Assino.
The analysis of catch selectivity of fishing equipment is a crucial step for the management of alien species in freshwater ecosystems. Roach Rutilus rutilus was introduced in many waterways in Italy ...often becoming the dominant species of the fish community and it is now considered potential pest. In Piediluco lake the species was first found in 2004 and its abundance has increased at a level that creates concern for the other fish species present in the lake. The growth of R. rutilus and the selectivity of gill-nets on its population were examined in Piediluco lake by analysing the selectivity of gill-nets of different mesh size. Sampling was conducted from January 2011 to October 2012 by means of gill-nets of different-sized mesh (8, 10, 12.5, 15.5, 19.5, 24, 28, 35, 45 and 55 mm). The results showed that R. rutilus in Piediluco lake had a growth faster and higher than in many other lake environments. The results of gill-nets selectivity gave important information to design a plan to control this species and confirmed that the use of suitable fishing techniques could be useful to manage the population of this alien species in Piediluco lake as well as in other similar environments.
L’analyse de la sélectivité des captures du matériel de pêche est une étape cruciale pour la gestion des espèces exotiques dans les écosystèmes d’eau douce. Le gardon Rutilus rutilus a été introduit dans de nombreux cours d’eau en Italie, devenant souvent l’espèce dominante de la communauté de poissons et il est maintenant considéré comme nuisible potentiel. Dans le lac de Piediluco l’espèce a été découverte en 2004 et son abondance a augmenté à un niveau qui suscite des inquiétudes pour les autres espèces de poissons présents dans le lac. La croissance de R. rutilus et la sélectivité des filets maillants sur la population ont été examinées au lac de Piediluco par l’analyse de la sélectivité des filets maillants de maillages différents. L’échantillonnage a été effectué de janvier 2011 à octobre 2012 au moyen de filets maillants de différentes mailles (8, 10, 12.5, 15.5, 19.5, 24, 28, 35, 45 et 55 mm). Les résultats ont montré que R. rutilus du lac de Piediluco a connu une croissance plus rapide et plus élevée que dans beaucoup d’autres milieux lacustres. Les résultats de la sélectivité des filets maillants ont donné des informations importantes pour concevoir un plan pour contrôler cette espèce et a confirmé que l’utilisation de techniques de pêche appropriées pourrait être utile pour gérer la population de cette espèce étrangère dans le lac de Piediluco, ainsi que dans d’autres environnements similaires.
The aim of the present work was to investigate how the native signal observed in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of tooth enamel and dentin is associated with the organic content ...of the two tissues. This was achieved by comparing the EPR native signal and the optical bands (Raman and infrared, IR) associated with organic components of tooth enamel and dentin, in natural and deproteinated samples. The main results were: (a) in natural samples, the organic optical bands are more intense in dentin than in enamel, in contrast with the EPR native signal which shows similar intensity in the two tissues; (b) after deproteination, the optical organic bands are completely suppressed in both dentin and enamel, while the EPR native signal is eliminated only in dentin. It is suggested that the IR and Raman organic bands are originated in the bulk of the organic matrix, while the paramagnetic centres associated with the EPR native signal are located in the organic-mineral interface.
