Aim
To investigate antibiotic prescribing habits reported by Brazilian endodontists in specific clinical situations.
Methodology
Brazilian endodontists (n = 13 853) were invited to answer an online ...questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: the first part contained personal data such as age, gender, years of experience and location of endodontic practice; the second part included questions regarding their behaviour when prescribing antibiotics in dental practice. The subjects provided their registration number in the Regional Council of Dentistry (RCD) to prevent duplication of data. Data were collected and analysed by SPSS 17.0 (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Chi‐square and Fisher's exact tests were used to test the significance of possible associations (P < 0.05).
Results
From the 13 853 questionnaires, a total of 615 were answered (4.44%). The first‐choice antibiotic was amoxicillin (81.5%), followed by amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (30.7%). For acute apical abscesses with intra‐ and extraoral diffuse swelling, fever and trismus, 90.1% reported they would prescribe antibiotics, whilst 88.1% reported they would prescribe antibiotics even without extraoral swelling, fever and trismus, and 20.5% would prescribe antibiotics in cases of chronic apical periodontitis, and sinus tract. The first‐choice antibiotics varied by age of dentist (P < 0.001) and time elapsed since their endodontic graduation (P = 0.001).
Conclusions
Many endodontists reported prescribing antibiotics in situations where they would not be indicated. Likewise, the general administration of antibiotics was longer in duration than necessary, reinforcing the need of continuous education regarding the use of antibiotics.
In the Mekong River delta and its associated coastal zone trace elements concentrations (Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb) were measured in the dissolved phase (DP) during dry (March 1997) and wet (October 1997) ...seasons. As, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Al were also measured in suspended matter (SM) and total and organic carbon, trace elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) and macro elements in superficial sediments (S). Trace metal concentrations in DP and SM during the contrasting hydrological conditions were generally found within the range observed for uncontaminated environment. The average DP concentrations (nM) in the river for March and October are: Cd 0.03 and 0.09, Cu 15 and 14, Ni 7.8 and 8.4, Pb 0.51 and 0.50, respectively. In general there is no significant difference between the concentrations observed during dry and wet season. The evolution of the DP trace metal concentration in the surface water within the salinity gradient suggests no noticeable exchange between the particulate and dissolved phase. This result is in good agreement with those observed in most plume structures studied so far. The average concentrations in the SM (μg/g) (March, October) at the river end-member are: As (24; 11), Co (17; 9), Cr (49; 29), Ni (32; 18), Pb (42; 19) and Al (113
000; 67
000), respectively. All trace elements show higher concentrations in March than in October, with an average increase of two times. This is essentially related to grain size effect since smaller particles were supplied during dry season. These differences are not reflected in the mixing zone, which integrates the seasonal variations. The concentration of major elements (C total, C organic, Si, Al, Ca, K, Fe, Mg, Ti), trace elements (Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Mn, Cr, Cd, Hg) in superficial sediments, show similar values during the two seasons and does not show any important variation with depth, indicating either a very fast sedimentation rate and/or the absence of any significant contamination.
This trial aimed to evaluate the influence of two educational methods on students' ability to remove artificial carious dentine. Traditional lecture and lecture plus a live demonstration of ...artificial carious tissue removal were compared in a blind two‐parallel‐group design. Twenty‐six students were randomly divided into two groups, and their skills were evaluated according to the following criteria: time spent on the dentine excavation procedure (in min), students' perceived confidence in conducting the procedure (graded assessed on a scale from 0 to 10), and the outcome of artificial carious tissue removal, evaluated by measuring the residual dyed artificial carious dentine layer (in μm). Statistical analyses were carried out using a t‐test to compare the students' confidence and time spent on the procedure, and a two‐way ANOVA was used to compare residual artificial decayed dentine with educational methods and tooth region (incisal, medium, and cervical thirds) as factors. There were no differences between the methods regarding excavation time (P = 0.898) and students' confidence (P = 0.382). The residual artificial carious dentine results showed that the educational method (P < 0.001) and cavity region (P < 0.001) were statistically significant, as was their interaction (P = 0.040). The lecture plus live demonstration group presented the best results for artificial caries removal. Although there were no differences between the two groups for the cervical region, the best results for the lecture plus live demonstration group was in the other two‐thirds of the tooth.
Abstract The decays B+ → J/ψπ+π − K+ are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1 collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and ...2018. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate ψ2(3823), χc1(3872) and ψ(2S) states are reported. The mass differences between the ψ2(3823), χc1(3872) and ψ(2S) states are measured to be m χ c 1 3872 − m ψ 2 3823 = 47.50 ± 0.53 ± 0.13 MeV / c 2 , m ψ 2 3823 − m ψ 2 2 S = 137.98 ± 0.53 ± 0.14 MeV / c 2 , m χ c 1 3872 − m ψ 2 2 S = 185.49 ± 0.06 ± 0.03 MeV / c 2 , $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{m}_{\upchi_{\mathrm{c}1}(3872)}-{m}_{\uppsi_2(3823)}=47.50\pm 0.53\pm 0.13\;\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}{m}_{\uppsi_2(3823)}-{m}_{\uppsi_2\left(2\mathrm{S}\right)}=137.98\pm 0.53\pm 0.14\;\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}{m}_{\upchi_{\mathrm{c}1}(3872)}-{m}_{\uppsi_2\left(2\mathrm{S}\right)}=185.49\pm 0.06\pm 0.03\;\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\end{array}} $$ resulting in the most precise determination of the χc1(3872) mass. The width of the ψ2(3823) state is found to be below 5.2 MeV at 90% confidence level. The Breit-Wigner width of the χc1(3872) state is measured to be Γ χ c 1 3872 BW = 0.96 − 0.18 + 0.19 ± 0.21 MeV $$ {\Gamma}_{\upchi_{\mathrm{c}1}(3872)}^{\mathrm{BW}}={0.96}_{-0.18}^{+0.19}\pm 0.21\;\mathrm{MeV} $$ which is inconsistent with zero by 5.5 standard deviations.

The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature for in vitro and ex vivo studies that evaluated the effect of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors during the adhesive procedure ...on the immediate and long-term resin-dentin bond strength. The search was conducted in 6 databases with no publication year or language limits, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. From 1,336 potentially eligible studies, 48 were selected for full-text analysis, and 30 were included for review, with 17 considered in the meta-analysis. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias. Pooled effect estimates were expressed as the weighted mean difference between groups. The most used MMP inhibitor was chlorhexidine (CHX). Immediate bond strength results showed no difference between 2% CHX and control; however, a difference was found between 0.2% CHX and control at baseline. After aging, CHX presented higher bond strength values compared to control groups (p < .05). However, this was not observed for longer periods of aging. High heterogeneity was found in some comparisons, especially for the water storage aging subgroup. Subgroup analyses showed that self-etching and etch-and-rinse adhesives are benefited by the CHX use. From the studies included, only 1 presented low risk of bias, while the others showed medium or high risk of bias. The use of MMP inhibitors did not affect the immediate bond strength overall, while it influenced the aged bond strength. Aging procedures influenced bond strength values of the dentin adhesion stability.
A balanced interaction between dopaminergic and cholinergic signaling in the striatum is critical to goal-directed behavior. But how this interaction modulates corticostriatal synaptic plasticity ...underlying learned actions remains unclear—particularly in direct-pathway spiny projection neurons (dSPNs). Our studies show that in dSPNs, endogenous cholinergic signaling through M4 muscarinic receptors (M4Rs) promoted long-term depression of corticostriatal glutamatergic synapses, by suppressing regulator of G protein signaling type 4 (RGS4) activity, and blocked D1 dopamine receptor dependent long-term potentiation (LTP). Furthermore, in a mouse model of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA)-induced dyskinesia (LID) in Parkinson’s disease (PD), boosting M4R signaling with positive allosteric modulator (PAM) blocked aberrant LTP in dSPNs, enabled LTP reversal, and attenuated dyskinetic behaviors. An M4R PAM also was effective in a primate LID model. Taken together, these studies identify an important signaling pathway controlling striatal synaptic plasticity and point to a novel pharmacological strategy for alleviating LID in PD patients.

Shen et al. reveal that muscarinic M4 receptor signaling in striatal projection neurons controls corticostriatal synaptic plasticity. In Parkinson’s disease models, boosting this pathway with a positive allosteric modulator blunts L-DOPA-induced deficits in synaptic plasticity and behavior.

(2010) 112, 1465-1476. l-DOPA-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease is associated with large increases in brain dopamine (DA) levels following drug dosing, but the precise ...significance of this phenomenon is not understood. Here we compare DA efflux and metabolism in the striatum and the substantia nigra in dyskinetic and non-dyskinetic animals following a standard dose of l-DOPA. Rats with 6-hydroxydopamine lesions were treated chronically with l-DOPA, monitored on the abnormal involuntary movements scale, and then subjected to intracerebral microdialysis under freely-moving conditions. Following s.c. l-DOPA injection, peak extracellular DA levels in both striatum and substantia nigra were about twice as large in dyskinetic animals compared to non-dyskinetic rats. This effect was not attributable to differences in DOPA levels or DA metabolism. The larger DA efflux in dyskinetic animals was blunted by 5-HT1A/5-HT1B receptor agonists and tetrodotoxin infusion, reflecting release from serotonin neurons. Striatal levels of serotonin and its main metabolite, 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid were indeed elevated in dyskinetic animals compared to non-dyskinetic rats, indicating a larger serotonergic innervation density in the former group. High DA release was, however, not sufficient to explain dyskinesia. The 'abnormal involuntary movements output' per unit concentration of striatal extracellular DA was indeed much larger in dyskinetic animals compared to non-dyskinetic cases at most time points examined. The present results indicate that both a high DA release post- l-DOPA administration and an increased responsiveness to DA must coexist for a full expression of dyskinesia.
