ABSTRACT
We present multiwavelength light curves and polarimetric data of the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar 3C 273 over 8 yr. The wavelength range of our data set extends from radio to gamma-rays. We ...found that the optical emission in this source is dominated by the accretion disc during the entire time-frame of study. We additionally find that in contrast with the observed behaviour in other blazars, 3C 273 does not show a correlation between the gamma-ray spectral index and the gamma-ray luminosity. Finally, we identified an anticorrelation between the 15 GHz and V-band light curves for the time-range JD245 = 4860–5760, which we speculate is the consequence of the inner part of the accretion disc falling into the black hole, followed by the ejection of a component into the jet.
Abstract
In this paper, we present the long-term optical spectral monitoring of a changing-look active galactic nucleus (AGN), NGC 3516, covering 22 yr (from 1996 to 2018). We explore a variability ...in the broad lines and continuum, finding that the continuum is changing by more than a factor of 2, while the broad lines are varying by more than a factor of 10. The minimum of activity is observed in 2014, when the broad lines almost disappeared. We confirm that NGC 3516 is a changing-look AGN, and the absorption seen in the ultraviolet and X-ray may indicate that there is an obscuring region that is responsible for this. The line profiles are also changing. The mean profiles of the broad Hα and Hβ lines show a shoulder-like structure in the wings, and an enhanced peak, which could indicate a complex broad-line region. The rms profiles of both lines seem to have the same shape and width, of around 4200 km s−1, indicating practically the same kinematics in the Hα and Hβ emitting regions. Measured time-lags between the continuum and Hα and Hβ broad-line variability are ∼15 and 17 d, respectively. In combination with the broad-line width, these measurements allow us to estimate the central black hole mass of NGC 3516. We find that the black hole mass is (4.73 ± 1.40) × 107M⊙ which is in agreement with previous estimates.

We present near-infrared imaging of FBQS J164442.5+261913, one of the few γ-ray emitting narrowline Seyfert 1 galaxies detected at high significance level by Fermi Large Area Telescope. Conducting a detailed 2D modelling of its surface brightness distribution and analysing its J − Ks
colour gradients, we find that FBQS J164442.5+261913 is statistically most likely hosted by a barred lenticular galaxy (SB0). We find evidence that the bulge in the host galaxy of FBQS J164442.5+261913 is not classical but pseudo, against the paradigm of powerful relativistic jets exclusively launched by giant ellipticals. Our analysis also reveals the presence of a ring with diameter equalling the bar length (r
bar = 8.13 ± 0.25 kpc), whose origin might be a combination of bar-driven gas rearrangement and minor mergers, as revealed by the apparent merger remnant in the J-band image. In general, our results suggest that the prominent bar in the host galaxy of FBQS J164442.5+261913 has mostly contributed to its overall morphology driving a strong secular evolution, which plays a crucial role in the onset of the nuclear activity and the growth of the massive bulge. Minor mergers, in conjunction, are likely to provide the necessary fresh supply of gas to the central regions of the host galaxy.
We investigate the relationship between the variable gamma-ray emission and jet properties in the blazar 3C 279 by combining the Fermi-LAT data spanning a period of eight years and concurrent radio ...measurements made at multiple epochs with VLBA at 15 and 43 GHz within the MOJAVE and VLBA-BU monitoring programmes. The aim of this paper is to compare the flux variability of the different components found in the VLBA observations, to the variability in the gamma-rays. This analysis helps us to investigate whether any of the jet components can be associated with the gamma-ray variability. Through Spearman rank correlation we found that the gamma-ray variability is correlated with a particular region (feature B in the MOJAVE images) downstream from the observed base (core) of the jet. This jet component is therefore a likely location where an important fraction of the variable gamma-ray emission is produced. We also calculated the average proper motion of the component with respect to the VLBA core and found that it moves at an apparent superluminal velocity of (3.70 ± 0.35)c, implying that one of the gamma-ray emission zones is not stationary. This jet component is also found between 6.86 mas and 8.68 mas, which translates to a distance from the radio core of at least 42 pc.
Aims.
We present the first release of Turin-SyCAT, a multifrequency catalog of Seyfert galaxies.
Methods.
We selected Seyfert galaxies considering criteria based on radio, infrared, and optical ...properties and starting from sources belonging to hard X-ray catalogs and surveys. We visually inspected optical spectra available for all selected sources. We adopted homogeneous and stringent criteria in the source selection aiming at reducing the possible contamination from other source classes.
Results.
Our final catalog includes 351 Seyfert galaxies distinguished in 233 type 1 and 118 type 2. Type 1 Seyfert galaxies appear to have mid-IR colors similar to blazars, but are distinguished from them by their radio-loudness. Additionally, Seyfert 2 galaxies have mid-IR colors more similar to quasars than BL Lac objects. As expected from their spectral properties, type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies show a clear distinction when using the
u
−
r
color. Finally, we found a tight correlation between the mid-IR fluxes at both 12 and 22 μm (i.e.,
F
12
and
F
22
, respectively) and hard X-ray fluxes between 15 and 150 keV. Both Seyfert types appear to follow the same trend and share similar values of the ratios of
F
12
and
F
22
to
F
HX
in agreement with expectations of the AGN unification scenario.
Conclusions.
As future perspectives, the Turin-SyCAT will then be used to search for heavily obscured Seyfert galaxies among unidentified hard X-ray sources, given the correlation between mid-IR and hard X-rays, and to investigate their large-scale environments.
Unilateral labyrinthectomy causes distinct oculomotor and postural disorder syndromes that gradually deteriorate. Simultaneously, compensatory mechanisms for the suppression of pathological disorders ...were activated. The current study aimed to investigate the characteristics of impulse activity in the ipsilateral and contralateral neurons of the lateral vestibular nucleus of unilaterally labyrinthectomized rats during various periods of vibration exposure. A program analysis of the background impulse activity of the neurons in the right- and left-lateral vestibular nuclei of rats under normal condition and after right-sided labyrinthectomy was performed. The animals were subjected to different periods of vibration exposure 2 days after surgery (5-, 10-, and 15-day periods). A comparison of the characteristics of the background impulse activity of neurons in both nuclei of intact rats revealed an initial asymmetry in the values of the mean impulse frequency and coefficient of variation of interimpulse intervals. After 5 days of vibration exposure, the values of the mean impulse frequency of neurons in both Deiters’ nuclei were almost equal in labyrinthectomized rats. The mean impulse frequency of neurons on the uninjured side was higher than that on the injured side on the days following vibration exposure. The characteristics and functional significance of the findings are discussed.
Abstract We recently built the G4Jy-3CRE catalog of extragalactic radio sources. This catalog lists 264 powerful radio sources selected with similar criteria to those of the revised Third Cambridge ...Catalog, but visible from the Southern Hemisphere. A literature search revealed that 119 sources in the G4Jy-3CRE catalog (i.e., 45%) lack a firm spectroscopic redshift measurement. Here, we present a campaign aimed at acquiring optical spectra of G4Jy-3CRE sources and measuring their redshifts. We used single-slit observations obtained with the Víctor Blanco Telescope, the New Technology Telescope, the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, and the 2.1 m telescope of the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional at San Pedro Mártir, Mexico. In addition, we analyzed Very Large Telescope/MUSE archival observations. From these observations, we report the spectra and redshifts of 93 sources, 42 of which are the first optical spectra and redshift determinations for the respective sources. With our new data, approximately 71% of the sources in the G4Jy-3CRE catalog now have firm spectroscopic redshift measurements. This data set will be the basis of our future analysis of the optical properties of the G4Jy-3CRE catalog.
ABSTRACT
The Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS17020+4544 is one of the few active galactic nuclei (AGNs) where a galaxy-scale energy-conserving outflow was revealed. This paper reports on NOEMA ...observations addressed to constrain the spatial scale of the CO emission in outflow. The molecular outflowing gas is resolved in five components tracing approaching and receding gas, all located at a distance of 2–3 kpc on the west and east sides of the active nucleus. This high-velocity gas (up to vout = ±1900 km s−1) is not coincident with the rotation pattern of the CO gas in the host galaxy disc. The estimated mass outflow rate shows that with a global mass output of $\dot{M}_{H_2}$ = 139$\pm 20~\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ yr−1, this powerful galaxy-scale outflow is consistent with the wind conserving its energy, and with a momentum rate boost of a factor of ∼30 compared to the momentum rate of the nuclear X-ray wind. Preliminary results from ancillary X-ray (Chandra) and radio images (e-MERLIN) are reported. While the nature of the radio source is not conclusive, the Chandra image may tentatively trace extended emission, as expected by an expanding bubble of hot X-ray gas. The outcome of the NOEMA analysis and of the past and ongoing publications dedicated to the description of the outflow multiband phenomenology in IRAS17020+4544 concur to provide compelling reasons to postulate that an outflow shocking with the galaxy interstellar medium is driving the multiphase wind in this peculiar AGN.
Abstract
We recently constructed the G4Jy-3CRE, a catalog of extragalactic radio sources based on the GLEAM 4-Jy (G4Jy) sample, with the aim of increasing the number of powerful radio galaxies and ...quasars with similar selection criteria to those of the revised release of the Third Cambridge Catalog (3CR). The G4Jy-3CRE consists of a total of 264 radio sources mainly visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Here, we present an initial X-ray analysis of 89 G4Jy-3CRE radio sources with archival X-ray observations from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We reduced a total of 624 Swift observations, for about 0.9 Ms of integrated exposure time. We found X-ray counterparts for 59 radio sources belonging to the G4Jy-3CRE, nine of them showing extended X-ray emission. The remaining 30 sources do not show any X-ray emission associated with their radio cores. Our analysis demonstrates that X-ray snapshot observations, even if lacking uniform exposure times, as those carried out with Swift, allow us to (i) verify and/or refine the host galaxy identification; (ii) discover the extended X-ray emission around radio galaxies of the intracluster medium when harbored in galaxy clusters, as the case of G4Jy 1518 and G4Jy 1664; and (iii) detect X-ray radiation arising from their radio lobes, as for G4Jy 1863.
