Background
Recently, autologous platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) has attracted attention in various medical fields, including plastic and orthopedic surgery and dermatology, for its ability to promote ...wound healing. PRP has been tested during facelift and hair transplantation to reduce swelling and pain and to increase hair density.
Objective
To investigate the effects of PRP on hair growth using in vivo and in vitro models.
Methods
PRP was prepared using the double‐spin method and applied to dermal papilla (DP) cells. The proliferative effect of activated PRP on DP cells was measured. To understand the mechanisms of activated PRP on hair growth, we evaluated signaling pathways. In an in vivo study, mice received subcutaneous injections of activated PRP, and their results were compared with control mice.
Results
Activated PRP increased the proliferation of DP cells and stimulated extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK) and Akt signaling. Fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF‐7) and beta‐catenin, which are potent stimuli for hair growth, were upregulated in DP cells. The injection of mice with activated PRP induced faster telogen‐to‐anagen transition than was seen on control mice.
Conclusions
Although few studies tested the effects of activated PRP on hair growth, this research provides support for possible clinical application of autologous PRP and its secretory factors for promotion of hair growth.
Portable fluorescence sensors have been developed for biochemical detection, water quality monitoring, biomedical sensing, and many other applications. With help of advancement in modern electronics, ...conventional fluorescence-based instrumentations are now integrated into portable sensing devices for remote and resource-limited settings. In this work, fluorescence sensing technology is introduced and different applications of portable fluorescence sensors and their characteristics are reviewed. Current issues, technological challenges, and future direction of the portable fluorescence sensor development are discussed. The goal is to provide a comprehensive survey on the recent advancements in optics, semiconductors, smartphones, and many other manufacturing technologies that increased the portability, miniaturization, and sensitivity of portable fluorescence sensor devices.
Caffeoyl shikimate esterase (CSE) has been shown to play an important role in lignin biosynthesis in plants and is, therefore, a promising target for generating improved lignocellulosic biomass crops ...for sustainable biofuel production. Populus spp. has two CSE genes (CSE1 and CSE2) and, thus, the hybrid poplar (Populus alba × P. glandulosa) investigated in this study has four CSE genes. Here, we present transgenic hybrid poplars with knockouts of each CSE gene achieved by CRISPR/Cas9. To knockout the CSE genes of the hybrid poplar, we designed three single guide RNAs (sg1–sg3), and produced three different transgenic poplars with either CSE1 (CSE1-sg2), CSE2 (CSE2-sg3), or both genes (CSE1/2-sg1) mutated. CSE1-sg2 and CSE2-sg3 poplars showed up to 29.1% reduction in lignin deposition with irregularly shaped xylem vessels. However, CSE1-sg2 and CSE2-sg3 poplars were morphologically indistinguishable from WT and showed no significant differences in growth in a long-term living modified organism (LMO) field-test covering four seasons. Gene expression analysis revealed that many lignin biosynthetic genes were downregulated in CSE1-sg2 and CSE2-sg3 poplars. Indeed, the CSE1-sg2 and CSE2-sg3 poplars had up to 25% higher saccharification efficiency than the WT control. Our results demonstrate that precise editing of CSE by CRISPR/Cas9 technology can improve lignocellulosic biomass without a growth penalty.
Lewy bodies that contain aggregated α‐synuclein in dopamine neurons are the main culprit for neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease. However, mitochondrial dysfunction has a well‐established and ...prominent role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. The exact mechanism by which α‐synuclein causes dopamine neuronal loss is unclear. Recent evidence suggests that aggregated α‐synuclein localises in the mitochondria contributes to oxidative stress‐mediated apoptosis in neurons. Therefore, the involvement of aggregated α‐synuclein in mitochondrial dysfunction‐mediated neuronal loss has made it an emerging drug target for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. However, the exact mechanism by which α‐synuclein permeabilises through the mitochondrial membrane and affects the electron transport chain remains under investigation. In the present study, we describe mitochondria–α‐synuclein interactions and how α‐synuclein aggregation modulates mitochondrial homeostasis in Parkinson's disease pathogenesis. We also discuss recent therapeutic interventions targeting α‐synuclein aggregation that may help researchers to design novel therapeutic treatments for Parkinson's disease.

This study aimed to assess the potential therapeutic effect of CM 50% ethanol extract (CME) on hypertension and the mechanism of its vasorelaxant effect. CME (1-30 µg/mL) showed a concentration-dependent vasorelaxation on constricted aortic rings in Sprague Dawley rats induced by phenylephrine via an endothelium-independent mechanism. The vasorelaxant effect of CME was inhibited by blockers of voltage-dependent and Ca
-activated K
channels. Additionally, CME inhibited the vascular contraction induced by angiotensin II and CaCl
. The main active compounds of CM, i.e., imperatorin (3-300 µM) and osthole (1-100 µM), showed a concentration-dependent vasorelaxation effect, with half-maximal effective concentration values of 9.14 ± 0.06 and 5.98 ± 0.06 µM, respectively. Orally administered CME significantly reduced the blood pressure of spontaneously hypertensive rats. Our research shows that CME is a promising treatment option for hypertension. However, further studies are required to fully elucidate its therapeutic potential.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is currently spreading globally. To overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, preclinical evaluations of ...vaccines and therapeutics using K18-hACE2 and CAG-hACE2 transgenic mice are ongoing. However, a comparative study on SARS-CoV-2 infection between K18-hACE2 and CAG-hACE2 mice has not been published. In this study, we compared the susceptibility and resistance to SARS-CoV-2 infection between two strains of transgenic mice, which were generated in FVB background mice. K18-hACE2 mice exhibited severe weight loss with definitive lethality, but CAG-hACE2 mice survived; and differences were observed in the lung, spleen, cerebrum, cerebellum, and small intestine. A higher viral titer was detected in the lungs, cerebrums, and cerebellums of K18-hACE2 mice than in the lungs of CAG-hACE2 mice. Severe pneumonia was observed in histopathological findings in K18-hACE2, and mild pneumonia was observed in CAG-hACE2. Atrophy of the splenic white pulp and reduction of spleen weight was observed, and hyperplasia of goblet cells with villi atrophy of the small intestine was observed in K18-hACE2 mice compared to CAG-hACE2 mice. These results indicate that K18-hACE2 mice are relatively susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 and that CAG-hACE2 mice are resistant to SARS-CoV-2. Based on these lineage-specific sensitivities, we suggest that K18-hACE2 mouse is suitable for highly susceptible model of SARS-CoV-2, and CAG-hACE2 mouse is suitable for mild susceptible model of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Probabilistic computing can solve complex combinatorial optimization problems more efficiently than conventional deterministic computing. A probabilistic bit (p‐bit) with an n‐p‐n bistable resistor ...(biristor) is demonstrated for probabilistic computing. It is fabricated on an 8‐inch wafer with complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) compatible technologies. Its stochastic behavior of threshold switching, which is based on the phenomenon of a single transistor latch, provides output with a Boltzmann distribution. The p‐bit is composed of a biristor, a serial resistor, and a comparator. The output probability of the biristor‐based p‐bits shows a sigmoidal relationship with the input voltage, showing typical p‐bit characteristics. Invertible Boolean logic operations with p‐bits are demonstrated, and weighted maximum Boolean satisfiability problems are solved with high energy efficiency and accuracy. The biristor‐based p‐bits with perfect CMOS compatibility show sufficient device stability, demonstrating the possibility of large‐scale integration with a p‐bit array for complex optimization solvers.

There is increasing interest in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) for large scale-energy storage systems. Vanadium electrolytes which function as both the electrolyte and active material are ...highly important in terms of cost and performance. Although vanadium electrolyte technologies have notably evolved during the last few decades, they should be improved further towards higher vanadium solubility, stability and electrochemical performance for the design of energy-dense, reliable and cost-effective VRFBs. This timely review summarizes the vanadium electrolyte technologies including their synthesis, electrochemical performances, thermal stabilities, and spectroscopic characterizations and highlights the current issues in VRFB electrolyte development. The challenges that must be confronted to further develop vanadium electrolytes may stimulate more researchers to push them forward.

. We observe, in vivo, that GQDs penetrate the blood-brain barrier and protect against dopamine neuron loss induced by α-syn preformed fibrils, Lewy body/Lewy neurite pathology and behavioural deficits.
