Ernest Hemingway was a frequent critic of the Italian Fascism, “from the very beginning... a thorn in the side of the inflated Fascist image” (John P. Diggins). This lingering antipathy reached its ...apotheosis in what might seem an insignificant controversy involving a short-lived literary journal called the New Review and its editor, Samuel Putnam. In 1932, Hemingway was dismissed from a jury of esteemed writers supposed to conduct the journal’s international survey of the year’s best literature.
