This paper focuses on the social media presence of Black Lives Matter (BLM). Specifically, we examine how social media users interact with BLM by using hashtags and thus modify the framing of the ...movement. We call this decentralized interaction with the movement "distributed framing". Empirically, we illustrate this idea with an analysis of 66,159 tweets that mention #BlackLivesMatter in 2014, when #BlackLivesMatter becomes prominent on social media. We also tally the other hashtags that appear with #BlackLivesMatter in order to measure how online communities influence the framing of the movement. We find that #BlackLivesMatter is associated with five types of hashtags. These hashtags mention solidarity or approval of the movement, refer to police violence, mention movement tactics, mention Ferguson, or express counter-movement sentiments. The paper concludes with hypotheses about the development of movement framings that can be addressed in future research.
We describe the development and testing of the hybrid ensemble/4D‐Var global data assimilation system that was implemented operationally at the Met Office in July 2011, giving an average reduction of ...RMS errors of just under 1%. The scheme uses the extended control variable technique to implement a hybrid background error covariance that combines the standard climatological covariance with a covariance derived from the 23‐member operational ensemble MOGREPS‐G. Unique features of the Met Office scheme include application of a horizontal ‘anti‐aliasing’ filter to the ensemble error modes, a vertical localization scheme based uniquely on a modification of the climatological stream function covariance, and inflation of the climatological covariance to maintain the analysis fit to observations. Findings during development include a significantly greater impact of the scheme in 3D‐Var than 4D‐Var, a clear positive impact from the combination of the anti‐aliasing filter and vertical localization, and a relatively small sensitivity to full coupling of the ensemble and 4D‐Var systems. Supplementary experiments suggest that the ability of the ensemble to capture coherent ‘Errors of the Day’ is key to the improvements in forecast skill.
A particular problem encountered during development was significantly poorer tropical verification scores when measured against own analyses. In contrast, verification against independent (ECMWF) analyses gave scores that were much more consistent with those against observations.

Abstract
Biological evolution of the microbiome continually drives the emergence of human viral pathogens, a subset of which attack the nervous system. The sheer number of pathogens that have ...appeared, along with their abundance in the environment, demand our attention. For the most part, our innate and adaptive immune systems have successfully protected us from infection; however, in the past 5 decades, through pathogen mutation and ecosystem disruption, a dozen viruses emerged to cause significant neurologic disease. Most of these pathogens have come from sylvatic reservoirs having made the energetically difficult, and fortuitously rare, jump into humans. But the human microbiome is also replete with agents already adapted to the host that need only minor mutations to create neurotropic/toxic agents. While each host/virus symbiosis is unique, this review examines virologic and immunologic principles that govern the pathogenesis of different viral CNS infections that were described in the past 50 years (Influenza, West Nile Virus, Zika, Rift Valley Fever Virus, Hendra/Nipah, Enterovirus-A71/-D68, Human parechovirus, HIV, and SARS-CoV). Knowledge of these pathogens provides us the opportunity to respond and mitigate infection while at the same time prepare for inevitable arrival of unknown agents.
Zika virus (ZIKV), an emerging flavivirus, has recently spread explosively through the Western hemisphere. In addition to symptoms including fever, rash, arthralgia, and conjunctivitis, ZIKV ...infection of pregnant women can cause microcephaly and other developmental abnormalities in the fetus. We report herein the results of ZIKV infection of adult rhesus macaques. Following subcutaneous infection, animals developed transient plasma viremia and viruria from 1-7 days post infection (dpi) that was accompanied by the development of a rash, fever and conjunctivitis. Animals produced a robust adaptive immune response to ZIKV, although systemic cytokine response was minimal. At 7 dpi, virus was detected in peripheral nervous tissue, multiple lymphoid tissues, joints, and the uterus of the necropsied animals. Notably, viral RNA persisted in neuronal, lymphoid and joint/muscle tissues and the male and female reproductive tissues through 28 to 35 dpi. The tropism and persistence of ZIKV in the peripheral nerves and reproductive tract may provide a mechanism of subsequent neuropathogenesis and sexual transmission.
The dynamics of condensed matter can be measured by the time-dependent Stokes shift of a suitable fluorescent probe. The time-dependent spectral correlation function is typically described by one or ...more spectral relaxation correlation times, which, in liquid solvents, characterize the timescales of the dipolar relaxation processes around the excited-state probe. The phasor plot provides a powerful approach to represent and analyze time and frequency-domain data acquired as images, thus providing a spatial map of spectral dynamics in a complex structure such as a living cell. Measurements of the phase and modulation at two emission wavelength channels were shown to be sufficient to extract a single excited-state lifetime and a single spectral relaxation correlation time, supplying estimates of the mean rate of excited-state depopulation and the mean rate of spectral shift. In the present contribution, two more issues were addressed. First, the provision of analytic formulae allowing extraction of the initial generalized polarization and the relaxed generalized polarization, which characterize the fluorescence spectrum of the unrelaxed state and the fully relaxed state. Second, improved methods of model discrimination and model parameter extraction for more complex spectral relaxation phenomena. The analysis workflow was illustrated with examples from the literature.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is heralded as the next big global epidemic. Hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL), the synthesis of new fatty acids from non-lipid sources, is thought to play a ...pivotal role in the development of NAFLD. While there is currently no NAFLD-specific therapeutic agent available, pharmaceutical drugs aimed at reducing hepatic fat accretion may prove to be a powerful ally in the treatment and management of this disease. With a focus on NAFLD, the present review summarizes current techniques examining DNL from a clinical perspective, and describes the merits and limitations of three commonly used assays; stable-label isotope tracer studies, fatty acid indexes and indirect calorimetry as non-invasive measures of hepatic DNL. Finally, the application of DNL assessments in the pharmacological and nutraceutical treatment of NAFLD/NASH is summarized. In a clinical research setting, measures of DNL are an important marker in the development of anti-NAFLD treatments.
The role of extracellular matrix (ECM) in neurological development, function and degeneration has evolved from a simplistic physical adhesion to a system of intricate cellular signaling. While most ...cells require ECM adhesion to survive, it is now clear that differentiated function is intimately dependent upon cellular interaction with the ECM. Therefore, it is not surprising that the ECM is increasingly found to be involved in the enigmatic process of neurodegeneration. Descriptive studies of human neurodegenerative disorders and experimental studies of animal models of neurodegeneration have begun to define potential mechanisms of ECM disruption that can lead to synaptic and neuronal loss.
