Zoonotic malaria poses a unique problem for malaria control. Autochthonous cases of human malaria in the Atlantic Forest have recently been attributed to Plasmodium simium, a parasite that commonly ...infects non-human primates in this Brazilian biome. However, due to its close similarity at both the morphological and molecular level to Plasmodium vivax, the diagnosis of P. simium in this region remains problematic. Therefore, a diagnostic assay able to accurately identify P. simium is important for malaria surveillance. Based on mitochondrial genome sequences, primers were designed to amplify a region containing a SNP specific to P. simium. This region can then be digested with the restriction enzyme HpyCH4III, which results in digestion of P. simium sequences, but not of any other malaria parasite. Fifty-two human and monkey blood samples from different regions and infected with different Plasmodium species were used to validate this protocol. This easy and inexpensive tool can be used for the diagnosis of P. simium in non-human primates and human infections from the Atlantic Forest region to monitor zoonotic malaria transmission in Brazil.
Several hormones regulate anuran larval development, most notably thyroid hormones (THs). In anurans, metamorphosis fails when the thyroid gland is absent or inactivated, resulting in giant tadpoles. ...Larval gigantism occurs naturally in neotropical frogs of the genus Pseudis as a result of a prolonged larval period. Its thyroid function is poorly investigated and the focus of this study. We describe qualitative and quantitative variations in larval development for field‐captured specimens of Pseudis platensis and compare those to the development of two sympatric species, Phyllomedusa sauvagii and Pithecopus azureus, which have small tadpoles and a shorter larval period. We describe morphological changes in the thyroid glands of larval and adult specimens. In contrast to other species with similar ecological requirements, P. platensis exhibits distinct glandular activity. During premetamorphosis, there was little or no thyroid activity, a period in which the tadpole reached 70% of its maximum size. Development and degree of activity of the thyroid gland determine the duration of the early stages of the larval period. Thyroid gland histology in tadpoles appears to correlate with the TH activity, and in turn with the diversity in anuran life history transitions.
Unlike most other anurans, the thyroid glands of Pseudis platensis show little or no glandular activity during premetamorphosis. Instead thyroid gland activity for this species starts abruptly at prometamorphosis.
Aflatoxicosis is a growing problem in aquaculture. A 42‐day study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and curcumin (CUR) to protect juvenile Pacific white shrimp ...(Litopenaeus vannamei) from aflatoxins. Growth parameters along with alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and glutathione S‐transferase (GST) activities were measured. Shrimps (36) with an average weight of 76 ± 0.9 mg were randomly allocated in eight experimental groups. Non‐contaminated diet (NCD) and aflatoxin‐contaminated diet (ACD) at 200 μg/kg were prepared. ACD was used to prepare six diets supplemented with CLA (4, 5 or 6 g/kg) and CUR (0.15, 0.2 and 0.3 g/kg). ACD reduced feed intake, growth rate and nitrogen retention efficiency, and increased ALP and GST activity. Improved nitrogen retention was observed for all groups feed with CLA. CUR supplementation at 0.2 g/kg increased feed intake and growth rate while at 0.15 g/kg increased nitrogen retention. ALP activity was reduced in all CUR groups and in 5 and 6 g/kg CLA groups. Reduction in GST activity was observed in 0.15 and 0.2 g/kg CUR groups and 4 g/kg CLA group. CLA supplementation and CUR supplementation can be beneficial to protect juvenile shrimp against aflatoxins.

To offer alternative management strategies to insecticides, several studies have identified the semiochemicals that are ...involved in the pepper weevil's aggregation and mating behavior; however, there is no information on its perireceptor molecular mechanism, to date. In this study, bioinformatics tools were used to functionally annotate and characterize the
head transcriptome and their probable coding proteins. We identified twenty-two transcripts belonging to families related to chemosensory processes, seventeen corresponding to odorant-binding proteins (OBP), and six to chemosensory proteins (CSP). All results matched with closely related Coleoptera: Curculionidae homologous proteins. Likewise, twelve OBP and three CSP transcripts were experimentally characterized by RT-PCR in different female and male tissues. The results by sex and tissue display the different expression patterns of the AeugOBPs and AeugCSPs; some are present in both sexes and all tissues, while others show expressions with higher specificity, which suggests diverse physiological functions in addition to chemo-detection. This study provides information to support the understanding of odor perception in the pepper weevil.

Testicular cancer is the most prevalent tumor among males aged 15 to 35, resulting in a significant number of newly diagnosed cases and fatalities annually. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have emerged as ...key regulators in various cellular processes and pathologies, including testicular cancer. Their involvement in gene regulation, coding, decoding, and overall gene expression control suggests their potential as targets for alternative treatment approaches for this type of cancer. Furthermore, epigenetic modifications, such as histone modifications, DNA methylation, and the regulation by microRNA (miRNA), have been implicated in testicular tumor progression and treatment response. Epigenetics may also offer critical insights for prognostic evaluation and targeted therapies in patients with testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT). This comprehensive review aims to present the latest discoveries regarding the involvement of some proteins and ncRNAs, mainly miRNAs and lncRNA, in the epigenetic aspect of testicular cancer, emphasizing their relevance in pathogenesis and their potential, given the fact that their specific expression holds promise for prognostic evaluation and targeted therapies.
In this article, various investigations on soft exoskeletons are presented and their functional and structural characteristics are analyzed. The present work is oriented to the studies of the last ...decade and covers the upper and lower joints, specifically the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, and ankle. Its functionality, applicability, and main characteristics are exposed, such as degrees of freedom, force, actuators, power transmission methods, control systems, and sensors. The purpose of this work is to show the current trend in the development of soft exoskeletons, in addition to specifying the essential characteristics that must be considered in its design and the challenges that its construction implies.

Pleurodema borellii
were conducted to explore the consequences of thyroid axis disruption; the sensitivity of tadpoles to the methimazole (2.66 mg/l) and thyroxine (T4) (1.66 μg/l) was compared. These concentrations were selected based on previous studies in
Pleurodema borellii.
We test the effects of methimazole and thyroxine on development in early exposure (from beginning of larval development) and late exposure, 18 days after hatching, with doses administered every 48 h. Tadpoles were evaluated 31 days after hatching. Methimazole caused moderate hypertrophy of the thyroid gland, alteration in the growth rates, differentiation without inhibition of development, and an increase of developmental variability. Thyroxine produced slight atrophy of the thyroid gland, accelerated growth rates and differentiation, and minor developmental variability. In tadpoles at stages previous to metamorphose, skull development (differentiation of olfactory capsules, appearance of dermal bones, and cartilage remodeling) seemed to be unaltered by the disruptors. Moreover, similar abnormal morphogenesis converged in specimens under methimazole and thyroxine exposures. Abnormalities occurred in pelvic and pectoral girdles, and vent tube, and could have been originated at the time of differentiation of musculoskeletal tissues of girdles. Our results indicate that premetamorphic stages (Gosner Stages 25–35) are sensitive to minimal thyroid axis disruption, which produces changes in developmental rates; these stages would also be critical for appendicular musculoskeletal morphogenesis to achieve the optimal condition to start metamorphosis.
The association between air pollution and suicide has recently been under examination, and the findings continue to be contradictory. In order to contribute evidence to this still unresolved ...question, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between air quality and daily suicides registered in Mexico City (MC) between 2000 and 2016. Air quality was measured based on exposure to particulate matter under 2.5 and 10 micrometers (µm) (PM
and PM
, respectively), ozone (O
), nitrogen dioxide (NO
), and sulfur dioxide (SO
), adjusting for weather variables (air temperature and relative humidity), and holidays. To this end, an ecologic time series analysis was performed using a Poisson regression model conditioned by time and stratified by gender and age groups. Models were also generated to explore the lagged and accumulative effects of air pollutants, adjusted by weather variables. The effects of the pollutants were very close to the null value in the majority of the models, and no accumulative effects were identified. We believe these results, in this case, no evidence of a statistical association, contribute to the current debate about whether the association between air pollution and suicide reported in the scientific literature reflects an actual effect or an uncontrolled confounding effect.
Unsignalized mid-block raised crosswalks have been adopted as inclusive transport strategies, providing humps to reduce vehicles’ speed to promote drivers to yield to pedestrians. The interaction ...between vehicles and pedestrians can induce local jams that can merge to become a gridlock. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the interaction between vehicles and the mid-block raised crosswalk, analyzing its effects on traffic flow, instantaneous CO2 emissions, and energy dissipation. A pedestrian–vehicle cellular automata model was developed, where a single-lane road with a mid-block raised crosswalk is considered. The lane boundaries were controlled with the injections rate (α) and extraction rate (β), while the pedestrians’ entrance was controlled with the rate (αp). The system’s phase diagram was constructed, identifying four phases: maximum current, jamming, congestion, and gridlock. All observed phase transitions are of the second order. The transition from maximum current (or jamming) phase to gridlock phase is not noticed. Moreover, since the crosswalk is a bottleneck, the gridlock phase takes place when the pedestrians’ influx exceeds a critical value (αp > 0.8). The study also revealed that the crosswalk is the main precursor of energy dissipation and CO2 emissions, whose major effects are observed during the jamming phase.
