The Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov technique has opened up previously unexplored windows for the study of astrophysical radiation sources in the very high-energy (VHE) regime and is playing an ...important role in the discovery and characterization of VHE gamma-ray emitters. However, even for the most powerful sources, the data collected by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are heavily dominated by the overwhelming background due to cosmic-ray nuclei and cosmic-ray electrons. As a result, the analysis of IACT data necessitates the use of a highly efficient background rejection technique capable of distinguishing a gamma-ray induced signal through identification of shape features in its image. We present a detailed case study of gamma/hadron separation and energy reconstruction. Using a set of simulated data based on the ASTRI Mini-Array Cherenkov telescopes, we have assessed and compared a number of supervised Machine Learning methods, including the Random Forest method, Extra Trees method, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). To determine the optimal weighting for each method in the ensemble, we conducted extensive experiments involving multiple trials and cross-validation tests. As a result of this thorough investigation, we found that the most sensitive Machine Learning technique applied to our data sample for gamma/hadron segregation is a Stacking Ensemble Method composed of 42% Extra Trees, 28% Random Forest, and 30% XGB. In addition, the best-performing technique for energy estimation is a different Stacking Ensemble Method composed of 45% XGB, 27.5% Extra Trees, and 27.5% Random Forest. These optimal weightings were derived from extensive testing and fine-tuning, ensuring maximum performance for both gamma/hadron separation and energy estimation.

Ultrafast outflows (UFOs) have been revealed in a large number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and are regarded as promising candidates for AGN feedback on the host galaxy. The nature and ...launching mechanism of UFOs are not yet fully understood. Here we perform a time- and flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on four XMM–Newton observations of a highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy, Mrk 1044, to study the dependence of the outflow properties on the source luminosity. We find that the UFO in Mrk 1044 responds to the source variability quickly and its velocity increases with the X-ray flux, suggesting a high-density ($10^{9}\!-\!4.5\times 10^{12}\, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$) and radiatively driven outflow, launched from the region within a distance of $98\!-\!6600\, R_\mathrm{g}$ from the black hole. The kinetic energy of the UFO is conservatively estimated ($L_\mathrm{UFO}\sim 4.4~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\, L_\mathrm{Edd}$), reaching the theoretical criterion to affect the evolution of the host galaxy. We also find that emission lines, from a large-scale region, have a blueshift of 2700–4500 km s−1 in the spectra of Mrk 1044, which is rarely observed in AGN. By comparing with other sources, we propose a correlation between the blueshift of emission lines and the source accretion rate, which can be verified by a future sample study.
ABSTRACT The fourth-DR3 version (4FGL-DR3) of the Fermi-LAT catalogue of γ-ray sources contains ∼1000 objects at a galactic latitude |b| > 10° that are not identified with an optical counterpart. We ...performed a systematic study of these sources, focusing on 190 objects that have a unique X-ray counterpart in the available Swift/XRT observations. Optical counterparts were then selected, and optical spectra were found in the literature for 33 sources. We found that 21 could be classified as BL Lac objects. Among these, we were able to provide the redshift for eight of them, while for two others we established a lower limit to the redshift by detecting intervening absorption. The other 12 objects display optical spectra with prominent emission lines (0.036 < z < 1.65). These spectra are characterized by both broad and narrow emission lines, with the exception of three sources. One of these displays only broad emission lines, while the other two exclusively exhibit narrow lines. On the basis of the radio/optical flux ratio, all BL Lac objects in this study are radio-loud. Four sources out of the 12 with prominent emission lines can be classified as radio-loud, while at least five of the 12 sources with prominent lines are radio-quiet. This is somewhat unexpected, given the radio-loudness distribution of 4FGL-associated blazars.
Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been revealed in a large number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the past two decades. Their extreme velocities and high ionization states make them a promising ...candidate for AGN feedback on the evolution of the host galaxy. However, their exact underlying driving mechanism is not yet fully understood. Given that the variability of UFOs may be used to distinguish among different launching mechanisms, we aim to search for and characterize the responses of the UFO properties to the variable irradiating luminosity. We perform a high-resolution time- and flux-resolved spectroscopy of archival XMM-Newton observations on six highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, selected by UFO detection and sufficient exposure times. The state-of-the-art methods of the blind Gaussian line scan and photoionization model scan are used to identify UFO solutions. We search for ionized winds and investigate the structure of ionized winds and their responses to the luminosity variations. The location, density, and kinetic energy of UFOs are estimated as well. The powerful photoionization model scan reveals three previously unreported UFOs in RE J1034+396, PG 1244+026 and I ZW 1 with a detection significance above $3 and two new warm absorbers (WAs) in RE J1034+396. Five out of six (83<!PCT!>) AGN in our sample host multi-phase ionized winds, where outflows in I ZW 1 are energy-conserved. The relatively low-ionization entrained UFOs are discovered in four (66<!PCT!>) AGN of our sample, supporting the shocked outflow interpretation for ionized winds in AGN. We notice that two out of seven (28<!PCT!>) UFOs in our sample seem to respond to the radiation field and three (43<!PCT!>) UFOs hint at a radiatively accelerated nature, requiring further observations. Combined with published works, we do not find any correlations between UFO responses and AGN properties except for a tentative ($ anti-correlation between the UFO acceleration and the Eddington ratio, to be confirmed by further observations and an enlarged sample. The kinetic energy of UFOs, mostly detected in soft X-rays, is found to have a large uncertainty. We, therefore, cannot conclude whether soft X-ray UFOs have sufficient energy to drive the AGN feedback, although they are very promising based on some reasonable assumptions. The primary UFO in I ZW 1 (detected in the hard X-ray) is the only case in our sample to possess conclusively sufficient energy to affect the host galaxy.

Accretion and ejection of matter in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are tightly connected phenomena and represent fundamental mechanisms regulating the growth of the central supermassive black ...hole and the evolution of the host galaxy. However, the exact physical processes involved are not yet fully understood. We present a high-resolution spectral analysis of a simultaneous XMM–Newton and NuSTAR observation of the narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) AGN 1H 1934-063, during which the X-ray flux dropped by a factor of ∼6 and subsequently recovered within 140 kiloseconds. By means of the time-resolved and flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy, we discover a potentially variable warm absorber and a relatively stable ultra-fast outflow (UFO, $v_\mathrm{UFO}\sim -0.075\, c$) with a mild ionization state ($\log (\xi /\mathrm{erg\, cm\, s^{-1})}\sim 1.6$). The detected emission lines (especially a strong and broad feature around 1 keV) are of unknown origin and cannot be explained with emission from plasmas in photo- or collisional-ionization equilibrium. Such emission lines could be well described by a strongly blueshifted (z ∼ −0.3) secondary reflection off the base of the equatorial outflows, which may reveal the link between the reprocessing of the inner accretion flow photons and the ejection. However, this scenario although being very promising is only tentative and will be tested with future observations.

We studied the spectral changes of the high-mass X-ray binary system LMC X-4 to understand the origin and mechanisms beyond its superorbital modulation (30.4 d). To this aim, we obtained a ...monitoring campaign with Swift/XRT (0.3–10 keV) and complemented these data with the years-long Swift/BAT survey data (15–60 keV). We found a self-consistent, physically motivated, description of the broad-band X-ray spectrum using a Swift/XRT and a NuSTAR observation at the epoch of maximum flux. We decomposed the spectrum into the sum of a bulk + thermal Comptonization, a disc reflection component, and a soft contribution from a standard Shakura–Sunyaev accretion disc. We applied this model to 20 phase-selected Swift spectra along the superorbital period. We found a phase-dependent flux ratio of the different components, whereas the absorption column does not vary significantly. The disc emission is decoupled with respect to the hard flux. We interpret this as a geometrical effect in which the inner parts of the disc are tilted with respect to the obscuring outer regions.

ABSTRACT
Ultrafast outflows (UFOs) have been detected in the high-quality X-ray spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with fairly high accretion rates and are thought to significantly ...contribute to the AGN feedback. After a decade of dedicated study, their launching mechanisms and structure are still not well understood, but variability techniques may provide useful constraints. In this work therefore we perform a flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on a highly accreting and variable NLS1 AGN, 1H 0707−495, using all archival XMM–Newton observations to study the structure of the UFO. We find that the wind spectral lines weaken at higher luminosities, most likely due to an increasing ionization parameter as previously found in a few similar sources. Instead, the velocity is anticorrelated with the luminosity, which is opposite to the trend observed in the NLS1 IRAS 13224−3809. Furthermore, the detection of the emission lines, which are not observed in IRAS 13224−3809, indicates a wind with a larger opening angle in 1H 0707−495, presumably due to a higher accretion rate. The emitting gas is found to remain broadly constant with the luminosity. We describe the variability of the wind with a scenario where the strong radiation extends the launch radius outwards and shields the outer emitting gas, similarly to super-Eddington compact objects, although other possible explanations are discussed. Our work provides several hints for a multiphase outflow in 1H 0707−495.
The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT) is one of the candidate missions selected by the European Space Agency for an initial assessment phase in the Cosmic Vision programme. It is proposed for ...the M3 launch slot and has broad scientific goals related to fast timing of astrophysical X-ray sources. LOFT will carry the Large Area Detector (LAD), as one of the two core science instruments, necessary to achieve the challenging objectives of the project. LAD is a collimated detector working in the energy range 2-50 keV with an effective area of approximately 10 m
2
at 8 keV. The instrument comprises an array of modules located on deployable panels. Lead-glass microchannel plate (MCP) collimators are located in front of the large-area Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) to reduce the background contamination from off-axis resolved point sources and from the diffuse X-ray background. The inner walls of the microchannel plate pores reflect grazing incidence X-ray photons with a probability that depends on energy. In this paper, we present a study performed with an ad-hoc simulator of the effects of this capillary reflectivity on the overall instrument performance. The reflectivity is derived from a limited set of laboratory measurements, used to constrain the model. The measurements were taken using a prototype collimator whose thickness is similar to that adopted in the current baseline design proposed for the LAD. We find that the experimentally measured level of reflectivity of the pore inner walls enhances the off-axis transmission at low energies, producing an almost flat-top response. The resulting background increase due to the diffuse cosmic X-ray emission and sources within the field of view does not degrade the instrument sensitivity.
Swift discovered the high-redshift GRB 050319 with the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and began observing with its narrow-field instruments only 225 s after the burst onset. The afterglow X-ray emission ...was monitored by the XRT up to 28 days after the burst. The light curve shows a decay with three different phases, each characterized by a distinct slope: an initial steep decay with a power-law index of 65.5, a second phase characterized by a flat decay slope of 60.54, and a third phase with a decay slope of 61.14. During the first phase the spectral energy distribution is softer than in the following two phases, and the photon index is consistent with the GRB prompt spectrum. The extrapolation of the BAT light curve to the XRT band suggests that the initial fast-decaying phase of the XRT afterglow might be the low-energy tail of the prompt emission. The second break in the afterglow light curve occurs about 27,000 s after the burst. The spectral energy distribution before and after the second break does not change, and it can be tentatively interpreted as a jet break or the end of a delayed or continuous energy injection phase.
